Sorry.  First time posting…

Sorry.  First time posting in years. No clue how I quadruple posted.

DD reminds me much more of…

DD reminds me much more of Derrick Walton than Trey Burke; he has a little bit of a stockier build and doesn't seem to have Trey's acceleration. Plus, similar to Walton, DD looks like he might have trouble finishing in the paint at the college level.  I think he will be like Walton in terms of being an excellent shooter from 3, running the offense efficiently and attacking hard closeouts but not being elite in terms of creating one-on-one off the bounce.

To be clear, I am very excited about DD - Walton was excellent as a senior and would have hit his ceiling earlier if not for the injuries. I think DD will push Z this season and will be the better option at times.  They should complement each other well.

Interesting post, but the

Interesting post, but the instances of holding you pointed out in the various plays were really, really weak and I can't imagine almost any of them being called.  In the videos labeled Earn the Right 1, 5 and 4, the blocks you cite as flag-worthy are holding only in the most general sense of the word and I've never seen those penalized in college football.

Will there be TV coverage or

Will there be TV coverage or an online stream for the Niagara game at all?

Somewhere out there, Tae

Somewhere out there, Tae Odoms is shaking his head sadly.

I think it will be relatively

I think it will be relatively close until midway through the second half, then Michigan pulls away for a 14 point win.

GRIII cools off from 3 point range and only gets about 12, but Trey cleans up the turonvers, Stauskas shoots the lights out (15+ pts) and McGary announces his presence with a breakout game.

Have they said when it will

Have they said when it will tip off? I'm trying to watch it on my phone while traveling.

Soft Goals?

I watched the highlights this morning and it looked to me like Niagara's goalie let in some soft goals, but it was pretty tough to tell on my work computer.  Could someone who made it to the game comment on that?  As another person who was concerned about the offense coming into the season, I'd like to know whether MIchigan has a little more firepower than I thought or whether they just had some puck luck and a sieve to shoot at.  Thanks.

BBQ

I'm laying in my hammock, I have a pork shoulder in my homemade smoker and plenty of good cold beer to keep me hydrated while I wait for some delicious pulled pork. It's going to be a good day.

Hockey

On a somewhat-related note, does anyone know when the hockey team's schedule is generally announced?  I ask because I would like to get back to Ann Arbor for a weekend where I can catch a football game and two hockey games at Yost.  The past few years there was at least one weekend like that.  From looking at the football schedule, the weekends which could potentially have home games for both sports are the Minnesota, Purdue, Nebraska and Ohio State football weekends.

Is the feed working for you?

Is the feed working for you?  All I see is a picture of a college basketball game.  Is that just because the game hasn't started yet?

Damn, I'm in NYC and won't be

Damn, I'm in NYC and won't be getting the game on CBS.  Is there any other way to get the game on TV? Does anyone know whether the UM Club will be organizing a watching party or is there someplace else people will be going that has the game?

For anyone looking, here is the link of the coverage map: http://the506.com/sports/?p=1975

Lacrosse has grown

Lacrosse has grown exponentially in the midwest, including Michigan.  I coached in the area, and I think that Michigan could do well with the midwest as a recruiting base.

Additionally, many of the best players in the northeast are comfortable going to school away from home - UNC and Duke recruit a large part of their class from Long Island and nearby areas.  I think Michigan could recruit from the midwest and pluck a few players from other areas (Maryland, Long Island) each year without too much problem.

Cost

I agree that the cost of the teams would probably be relatively low, but I would be incredibly surprised if lacrosse ended up being break-even at any point.  That's not to say I don't want to see lacrosse added.  I played div.1 lacrosse elsewhere before coming to Michigan for grad school, and I probably would've come to Michigan for undergrad if they had a program when I was deciding on schools.  I love the sport and would even donate to the lax program at Michigan.  That said, I don't believe many of the lacrosse programs in the country are in the black.  Hockey gets unbelievable attendance and I would be shocked (but pleased) if the lacrosse team got a similar amount of support.

Highlights?

Damn, I thought this game was tomorrow.  Anyone know where I could find some highlights? I tried the NCAA website and there weren't any posted yet.

Fair point.

Fair point.

I saw Hart, Patti, and Miller

I saw Hart, Patti, and Miller in the Union yesterday.  I wasn't going to post about it until this topic came up, but I will chime in and mention that Nick is not 5'11".  I'm around 5'9" and he wasn't taller than me.

That said, he could well put on 3 or more inches still, and I've always thought that height was not nearly as important for college quarterbacks as it is for pro quarterbacks.  I hope Nick chooses Michigan, his highlights are impressive.

I don't mean to be debbie

I don't mean to be debbie downer, but it's a highlight tape.  Of course he made all the right decisions.

I just finished booking a BBQ

I just finished booking a BBQ and college football roadtrip for September. Three friends and I are going to 3 football games: Cincy @ NC State (Thurs night), Florida @ Tennessee, UCLA @ Texas. On the way we have planned stops at about a dozen of the most famous BBQ places in the south. I think it will be amazing.

It would be awesome if we

It would be awesome if we could figure out a bar to meet at pregame and take over. Anyone from Fort Wayne want to suggest one near the arena?

Sorry. I've been online all

Sorry. I've been online all day and missed it somehow. Neg away.

I don't think Summers will be

I don't think Summers will be playing. I was sitting close to our bench, and noticed he had a knee brace of some kind under his suit pants and was not moving well at all.

Thanks for all the

Thanks for all the suggestions. Crunchy's and Menna's both look good.

While $10/hr is obviously not

While $10/hr is obviously not much pay, I think they will get a fair number of law grads applying. A lot of recent law school grads have been deferred by the firms who offered them jobs, meaning they have a job in theory, but will not start working for awhile and are looking for something to do in the interim. Other law grads don't have a job at all because of this economy. For example, I graduated in December 09, but won't start work until October 2010 - others have been deferred significantly longer. I recently found something to do in the interim, but I would've seriously considered this job otherwise, if for no other reason but I think it would be a cool experience.

I've decided to nickname

I've decided to nickname Shawn Hunwick "Yoda" due to stature and his apparent ability last night to use his jedi powers to convince the other team that they don't want to shoot the puck on net.

I think the iPhone does have

I think the iPhone does have this capability, but it is disabled in the US b/c of AT&T. I think the feature does work on other networks in other countries with the current version of the phone and software. I could be wrong though.

I agree, Michigan was very

I agree, Michigan was very impressive. I didn't mean to slight them at all with my comments about their intensity and use of the ten-man ride. From a pure talent standpoint, it certainly appeared Michigan was the better team. It's unbelievable that a club team can take down a d.1 team with scholarships.

There is a big gap between the lower d.1 teams like Bellarmine, Detroit, etc. and the big boys like UNC, UVA, Syracuse, etc. I think that Michigan would be able to be competitive right away but would take some time to compete for tournament berths, but I think the time is definitely right to make the jump to division 1.

Disagree. Just because there

Disagree. Just because there are only two options doesn't mean that there is a 50% chance we sign any one of them. By that logic we have a 50% chance of signing Seantrel Henderson.

I made it out to the

I made it out to the scrimmage tonight and came away very impressed. Michigan was very talented and played hard, and when they made mistakes they were saved by outstanding goaltending. They lead the whole game and gave Bellarmine fits with their ten-man ride. I think Bellarmine didn't bring nearly the same level of intensity because for Michigan this was a chance for the Wolverines lacrosse team to make a statement, but regardless Michigan clearly showed they belonged on the same field as a division 1 team.

As a Jets fan and Wolverine,

As a Jets fan and Wolverine, I see both sides of this. I was excited for Charles Woodson winning, because he is one of my favorite players all time. That said, Revis has been unbelievable and I thought objectively had the better season. I knew there was a good chance Woodson would get the award though, and I don't have a problem with it.

I know Rex Ryan's comments will rub a lot of people the wrong way, and I'm sure he knew that at the time too. I dont think it bothers him if fans of other teams get annoyed and feel as though he is disrespecting their players. Rex wants the players to know he has their back, and I'm sure Revis loves the support form his coach.

I don't mind you being angry

I don't mind you being angry with the Wings play, but there's no reason to go making fun of my poor Islanders. They have a hard enough time without getting called out on college football message boards.

In all seriousness, the Islanders can be tough to play against. They come at you hard and can make life difficult. Their biggest problem has been play 60 minutes. They have been able to jump all over a lot of good teams.

Manny Harris has not looked

Manny Harris has not looked like an NBA player this season, definitely not a first round pick anyway. That said, he looks like he has already checked out, so I'll be interested to see whether he decides to stay or declare for the draft.

The game tonight was

The game tonight was excruciating. I wanted to punch a small child the entire game. Having season tickets to basketball and hockey is torture. Our teams are so frustrating it's unreal. The hockey team looked lifeless and played sloppy. RPI was not in any way a good team. They were slow, less talented, and gave up a ton of chances.

I know this post adds no value, I just need to vent.

"I just want to thank the

"I just want to thank the guys in compliance for finding this loophole, and I want to thank Coach Rodriguez for welcoming me back to the team for another season."

-Brandon Graham, upon finding out that because of a little known rule change, he has a year of eligibility left and will return to Michigan for his super-senior season.

Yeah, we've been in to

Yeah, we've been in to Detroit probably about ten times now between Michigan hockey games, Tigers games, and shows. We've found several good places to eat and have never had any problems. It's a real shame that people are so closed-minded about going out in Detroit.

If we left Ann Arbor just before 4:30, do you think that would be enough time to get into the city and eat at Slow's and still get to the Joe for puck drop?

I was thinking about going to

I was thinking about going to Buddys - Alan Richman (GQ) rated it as one of the 25 best pizzas in the country.

Im sure you're right that I

Im sure you're right that I could get burgers anywhere in Greektown, but I'm trying to figure out where the best burgers and pizza are.

Free parking sounds good though.

I have to think it is Pitt or

I have to think it is Pitt or Iowa St. Syracuse is really a basketball school. It wouldn't make sense for the school to leave the Big East where it already has basketball rivalries. Louisville might make sense, but I don't think they are a good fit academically. Pitt is the best fit, but adding a strong football school to the hypothetical East division or a weak one to the hypothetical west (ISU) is trouble in terms of competitive balance.

Thanks very much.
How does

Thanks very much.

How does the team look?

They're not streaming the TV

They're not streaming the TV broadcast on MGoBlue.com. There is only radio and gametracker, and the gametracker doesn't even seem to be working (unless the game actually has been stopped with 3:56 left in the 1st for about 20 minutes. Can anyone give some updates?

Nobody puts Witty in the corner.

But seriously, I was under the impression he was a safety too. It will be interesting to see what DBs see the field. We have high hopes for a lot of these guys, but its tough for freshmen to get on (See Turner).

Hearsay? Or heresy?
Just

Hearsay? Or heresy?

Just kidding.

This has been the issue of

This has been the issue of expansion that I've really been thinking hard about. How do we set up the two divisons? I think they pretty much have to be geographic. If the B10 adds a 12th team, it MUST be a western (relatively) school with a strong football program. UM, OSU, and PSU - the historical power programs - all have to be in the eastern division. If you have ND, Wisconsin, and Iowa in the west, then its probably ok. But if you add another strong eastern school like pitt, there is no balance between the divisons. I think these divisions keep the major rivalries intact, and are (relatively) comparable in football, though there is potential for it to be uneven like the Big 12 divisions have been recently.

Divisions:

UM
MSU
OSU
PSU
Ind
Purdue

ND
Wiscy
Minn
Ill
NW
Iowa

I'm very interested to see other people's possible divisions and explanations considering other potential additions. I think this is a pretty important consideration. If it isn't ND joining... UM and OSU need to be in the same division and play every year. MSU has to be in that division also. If you were thinking only of parity, Wisconsin, PSU, and Iowa would have to be in the other division, like Northern Fan says, but does that really make sense?

One last thing worth noting... if you add ND, then a B10 hockey conference becomes a reality: UM, MSU, OSU, Wiscy, Minn, ND. Sound fun? That is a whole other discussion though.

I am more than happy to

I am more than happy to donate to Mott if a link is posted, I think that's a great idea.

But lets not ask Brian to shift the beveled guilt to them as well. Brian works incredibly hard on this blog for relatively little reward, and asking him to give one of his sources of income to this cause is somewhat unfair. I would guess that he'd be willing to donate some himself and post a link, but lets not put an unfair burden on him by taking away a revenue stream.

This is complete speculation,

This is complete speculation, but I think Carvin Johnson might be a softer commitment than we realize, and part of the reason we seem to be over-recruiting. Check out the Friday Night Lights post: "LSU is starting to show interest... more on that situation tomorrow..."

Interesting post, and I'd

Interesting post, and I'd love to see it, but I disagree. I believe you are parsing his words too closely.

I think the frustration of going undefeated at Cincinnati and not even getting to sniff the national title game will motivate him to take the ND job. You mention better opportunities next year, and I agree that ND is not as good of a job as their fans make it out to be, but what better job is coming open next year? (Don't say it...)

Also, even with Clausen and Kelly leaving, the offensive cupboard is still fully stocked at ND. Their QB, Crist, was a huge recruit and I think will be able to step up nicely. They still have Michael Floyd who is an absolute beast, and they can fill the other WR spot with Shaq Evans. Kelly wants to be in the big-time. The Big East is not on par with the other BCS conferences and is becoming a stepping stone to bigger jobs like the MAC or the Mountain West.

Edit: Sorry, by the time I got my thoughts down Magnus had already beaten me to the punch on most of them.
