OT: who do you root for in other sports?
In some recent threads, I’ve seen people post about the team they root for in another sport and I find it fascinating how so many of us root for completely different teams in other sports. That got me curious to see it posted to see more people?
here are mine:
CFF: Michigan
CBB: Michigan
NHL: Predators
NFL: Titans / Lions
NBA: whoever plays Lebron (yes I’m a hater)
MLB: don’t watch
There are other sports?
Michigan / Detroit teams / U.S.A. teams / Italian teams
All college sports:Michigan (really only watch football and basketball religiously, baseball and hockey when I can)
NHL: Don't really watch. Was a "redwings fan" when I was younger so would go back to that if I got back into it.
NFL: Steelers
NBA: Couldn't really care less. If Michigan guys are playing I root for them.
MLS: Columbus Crew
MLB: Don't watch. Don't really feel a pull to any team.
Redwings
Lions
Germany in the world cup
Warriors as long as they have Steph
(I am a fair weather fan of the Pistons, and I could care less about baseball)
edit: I am allowed to be a Warrior fan because I lived in the Bay for a significant amount of my life and we had corporate tickets that I often was rewarded for free as a bonus. I liked them before they were good. But I admit that I have a man crush on Steph ever since I watched his NCAA run with Davidson
I am allowed to root for Germany because my wife is German and I've been there countless times, they are the reason I got hooked on the world cup and Euro-cup
Besides Michigan football, Pitt, Penguins, Steelers, and any MLB game on TV… baseball will forever be my favorite sport. I’ll watch any game that’s on.
How many years ago was your eightieth birthday?
Detroit Red Wings
Boston Red Sox
Miami Dolphins
Michigan Wolverines
Don't forget the Mega-Bytes!
Long live the dominance of the Mega-Bytes!
CFB/CBB etc Michigan
NBA: Pistons
MLB: Tigers
NHL: Wings
NFL: Bears (started watching pro ball in the late 70s and was fascinated by Walter Payton’s style of play)
Premiere League: Spurs (I enjoy disappointment apparently)
Slippery Rock
Question on the whole slippery rock thing. I’ve been to quite a few Michigan games and I see that they post slippery rock scores. What exactly is slippery rock and what is the attachment to Michigan football? Been meaning to ask for years.
It's really a fun tradition. One of my wife's degrees is from Slippery Rock and I intentionally didn't tell her about this before her first trip to the Big House. It was great seeing her face when she realized what score they just read!
(your link directs to a 404 error; has some extra characters at the end of your url)
Summary: a long time ago UM's pa announcer liked to say "slippery rock" and said their score every week. Since then, the programs have linked up various times for publicity and good ambassadorship. There are many events listed in the article.
I think I remember my dad saying something about Michigan's bus breaking down near Slippery Rock in the forties, and they showed great hospitality to the UM team, so that was UM's rooting interest from them on. Probably not true and there are probably many made-up origin stories that are more interesting than the real story.
Drat... double post
Oh well. 45-23!
"Been meaning to ask for years."
I think that's important information.
Respect to all Slippery Rock fans (direct and indirect), but in the 2020s there aren't many people in the stadium who are in on the joke (announcement of the scores). I would've ended it several years ago.
CFF: Michigan
CBB: Michigan
NHL: Red Wings
NFL: Lions / Broncos
NBA: Clippers
MLB: Tigers, Angels, Pirates
MLS: LAFC
Football: Michigan; FSU to be good enough to keep Tallahassee economy humming but lose close games to good teams in heartbreaking fashion
Beisbol: Tigers; Ohtani; FSU; Michigan
Futbol: Trinity Washington, FSU women, Spain women, Jamaican women, Michigan men
Basketball: Meechigan pretty exclusively; underdogs in NCAAs; Duke to lose; Warriors and Draymond Green to get fd eat poop and croak
Field hockey: Michigan
Volleyball: FSU women
Softball: Michigan
Gymnastics: Michigan
Cricket: Grenada
I root for Bolivia in cricket
Michigan Football and Red Wings hockey are all I actively follow all that closely. Michigan Hockey and Wrestling are just on the periphery.
I grew up in the KMOX footprint, so I'm a St. Louis Cardinals fan from way back. Then I met a young lady from Ireland who played hockey (the kind played on grass) for Pembroke Wanderers. Any other Wanderers fans out there?
Michigan and Detroit.
I have secondary teams of course (Pats when Brady was there), but Michigan and Detroit always come first.
Lions and Michigan football. I wish all the other Detroit teams well, I just no longer follow them.
CFF: Michigan
CBB: Michigan
NHL: Red Wings
NFL: Steelers but always hope the Lions do well.
NBA: Haven't watched in years
MLB: Tigers. Love baseball
College: Michigan
NFL: Lions, Denver, Cleveland
NHL: Detroit, Toronto
MLB: Detroit
NBA: Detroit
Which of the above do I truly give a shit about and actively root for and follow? Michigan.
CFB: UM
CBB: UM
NBA: Pistons
NFL: Lions
MLB: Tigers ostensibly but living in Chicagoland I’ve grown to like the Cubs
NHL: n/a
The Moscow Mets?
At this point in life, I only follow CFB but back when I was younger and an avid sports fan:
CFB & CBB: Michigan
NHL: *yawn* (Never watched)
NFL: Steelers
NBA: Celtics
MLB: Reds
As you can see, I was all over the place. Grew up in Columbus, OH but only followed one Ohio team unlike my dad and brother who were fans of all the Ohio teams.
I grew up in the middle of nowhere Nevada, so didn't have a local team, but my Dad is from LA so he brainwashed me to root for the LA teams(until the football teams left and I could effectively become a free agent for that so I picked up the Lions when I went to B-School and the Titans when I moved to Nashville.
CFF: Michigan(Grad School), USAFA(Undergrad), UCLA(Lifelong fan)
CBB: Michigan(Grad School), USAFA(Undergrad), UCLA(Lifelong fan)
NHL: Predators(Live in Nashville)
NFL: Titans / Lions(story above)
NBA: Lakers, but am ambivalent until Lebron leaves the team(also a hater)
MLB: I Bleed Dodger Blue
Premier League: Tottenham Hotspur, yes the Bill Simmons article started it, but what sealed it was the description of the team being if the Dodgers had stayed in Brooklyn, they'd be Spurs. At that point it was over. Also given the other teams on my list I like the Blue based color schemes :)
Now that my son has been getting into wrestling(even quitting football to concentrate on wrestling, which broke my heart, but it ain't my life) I have been following Michigan and Air Force wrestling as best I can as I now actually know what I'm watching.
Michigan first, for football and basketball
NBA, Portland Trail Blazers
NFL, Kansas City Chiefs
MLB, (shrug) Royals I guess
Are there other sports? I like the Savannah Bananas, if that counts.
Edit: My Norman, OK, son has got me interested in OU gymnastics
CFF: Michigan
CBB: Michigan
NHL: Capitals
NFL: Chargers
NBA: Don't really watch
MLB: Padres
Detroit sports and Liverpool (the other team with the best "fight song" in sports).
Michigan and the Detroit teams. And I stuck to that living in NY 30 years.
I did adopt the Ravens as an alternative / AFC team, since my buddy took me to the stadium several times. You can only get kicked in the nuts by the Lions so many times......
MLB: Braves. I grew up in Tampa but we always got the Braves games down there. This was before the Rays (or Devil Rays, as they were known once upon a time) showed up, and I became infatuated with watching them. Watching those all-star lineups of Chipper, Andrew Jones, Klesko, Javier Lopez, McGriff, and then their absolute Murderers Row of a pitching lineup of Maddux, Glavine and Smoltz. My love of the Braves also started my hatred of the Yankees, after seeing the Yankees make quick work of the Braves in the ‘96 and ‘99 World Series. I’m not as big a fan now as I was when I was a kid, but I live in Atlanta now and keep close tabs on how they’re doing. Best team in baseball right now, and they could absolutely win it all again. Don’t care about the Rays. Never really have, and couldn’t tell you a single player on their roster.
NBA: Couldn’t care less. If I have to watch a game, I’ll root for the team that has a Michigan player on it.
Futbol: Don’t watch. I suppose I should, but I don’t. I hear Atlanta United was good a couple years ago? All I know for sure is if you line up this country’s best against most any team in Europe or South America, Team USA will get murdered and left to rot.
NFL: I’m still a casual Bucs fan. If they do well, great. If not, whatever, but in between when I graduated high school and when Brady showed up, they were just dreadful, and never any fun to watch, so I lost a lot of interest. But I grew up in the Dungy/Gruden years, and those teams, especially the defenses, were a lot of fun to watch. I’d say I’m a bigger fan of the NFL at large than I am of any one team. I just enjoy watching a good game and obsessing a bit too much over my Yahoo Fantasy app during the season.
NHL: Lightning (catching a trend here?). I’ve gotten to watch some pretty good teams over the last twenty years, seen quite a few great playoff games in person, and got to watch them hoist the Cup in-person at Game 5 two years ago. A Florida hockey team probably has no business having been as good as the Lightning have been these past few years, but Yzerman built a machine down there. And they were good even before he showed up. Loudest sports environment I’ve ever been in my whole life was the end of Game 7 of the 2004 ECF, watching the Lightning take down the Flyers to advance to the Stanley Cup. Those teams with St. Louis, Lecalvier, Brad Richards, Khabibulin….man they were good too.
Bears.
Well, da
College - Michigan
NHL - not really interested at all, but pull for the Red Wings for my dads sake
NBA - Childhood Bullets fan, changed to King’s when Webber was there and Bullets became Wizards, then Pistons once Webber’s career became super injury laden, total bandwagon fan.
NFL - Lifelong Redskins fan being from NoVa, but hard to cheer for a team called the commanders, secondhand lions fan
MLB - don’t care, but the Orioles, Cal Ripken kid here
All U of 〽️ sports teams, of course (more or less in this order of importance to me:)
1) Football
2) Hockey
3) Men's hoops
4) (tie) Baseball and Softball
5) Women's hoops
6) Both Lacrosse teams (initially got the lacrosse bug by attending several high school games of nieces'teams.)
7) (tie) all other U of M teams
Longest (and next strongest) rooting interest? The Detroit Tigers. I've followed them since around the age of 7 thanks to my Grandpa and his similar love for OUR 🐯 Tigers.
Rankings from there on down:
- (tie) Detroit 🦁 Lions & Red Wings
- WMU 🐎 football
- Pittsburgh 🏴☠️ Pirates
- anyone playing the Dallas Cowboys or the Yankees
- Detroit Pistons (strictly bandwagon at best when they're occasionally competitive)
*(Extra special honorable mention: any and all sports teams my granddaughter is a member of!)
Michigan, Red Wings, Lions, Pistons, Chelsea. While not a team, I like Justin Thomas, Rickie Fowler, and Viktor Hovland a lot when it comes to golf. I don’t watch or pay attention to baseball.
University of Michigan--all sports.
New York Yankees.
New York Giants.
New York Knicks.
Everton Toffees (COYB. Kopites are gobshites).

Don’t care anymore but I was a Blues fan back in the day. I just listen to it now.
Giants/Titans - but I pull for the Lions. Been following them since the Greg Landry days.
NBA isn’t what it used to be - it’s not much more than a ego full - attention starved bunch of clowns more concerned with Woke Joke politics and unimaginative play. Therefore I couldn’t careless about the NBA - National Bonehead Academy.
I got tired of baseball strikes and quit watching about 20 years ago - 60’s 70’s 80’s huge Yankees and Mets fan - I was born in the Bronx. I became a Braves fan in the 90’s and early 2000’s then I just said screw it.
College: Michigan
NFL: Detroit
NBA: Detroit
NHL: Detroit
MLB Detroit and Cincinnati ( Cincinnati only because the stadium is within walking distance of the hotel I stay at for work. I catch several games a year )
MLS: FC Cincinnati
CFB- Michigan, obvs.
NFL- Meh. Whatever team has the most players from Michigan on it, or the least players from an Ohio state
NHL- Rangers
BJJ- Whoever is competing against Gordon Ryan/Meregali/DDS/American Top Team. Loved when Nicky Rod snapped Gordon's leg like a twig.
MMA- Whoever is fighting Conor MacGregor/Colby Covington/Jon Jones/Khamzat- or whichever fighter is less tight with the whole Joe Rogan/Jocko Willinck toxic masculinity/science denial grift in general
MLB- Yankees
I don't really watch basketball or soccer unless it's like a viewing party that someone else throws. I'd rather be fighting.
UM/ Detroit teams mostly but I vaguely root for some other teams in the big 4.
College Football: Michigan
Hate; OSU, Alabama, Tennessee, Notre Dame
College Basketball: Michigan, Michigan State (grew up huge Magic Johnson fan)
Hate: DOOK
NBA: Pistons, Lakers, Warriors
Hate: Bulls, Celtics
NHL: Redwings, Kraken (mostly for the name, but I'd like to see some West Coast success in the NHL)
Hate: Avalanche, Blues, Rangers
NFL: Lions, Steelers, Ravens
Hate: Giants, Commanders (Redskins), Cowboys
MLB: Tigers--mostly hate everyone in the AL central and don't really care about the NL (except I hate the Mets)
Hate the Giants and the Mets because they were doing well during my first year of college and I heard how awesome they were endlessly from Long Island/NYC contingent in my dorm.
Duke, The Commanders, Cowboys and Alabama are just intrinsically evil.
NFL: Bengals
MLB: Reds
NBA: Cavs
NHL: Bruins
College Football (aside from Michigan): Cincinnati
college basketball (aside from Michigan): North Carolina
Soccer: FCC Cincy
Golf: Rickie Fowler
MLB: Padres
NFL: damn you Chargers. Now, I don’t have a dog since Brady retired.
NHL: Wings but rarely watch or follow
NBA: zero interest now, grew up a Piston Fan. Love the Bad Boys
anything Michigan athletic team receives my undivided attention. After football Saturdays, I have nothing left in the tank to slightly care about a teams outcome having emptied my fan-energy tank on Michigan.
Go Fucking Blue. This. Is. The. year.
College Football: Michigan
Pro Football: Lions/Steelers
College & Pro Basketball: No longer watch
College Hockey: Michigan
Pro Hockey: Red Wings and whoever is playing Toronto
Baseball: No longer watch
I no longer have the patience to sit and watch a baseball game. I played basketball in high school, but stopped watching when the 3 point shot changed the way the game is played.
