OT: What is your second favorite rivalry in sports?

Submitted by The Dirty Nil on
Assuming everyone on the board would share the same opinion on the number one rivalry, what is the second best?

I'll say Canadiens vs Bruins. Those games have been intense the last several years.

Michigan State vs. Michigan. My hometown of Tampa doesn't really have much at all in the way of sports rivalries, either because the team hasn't been around long enough to form a natural rivalry (Lightning), or the team has stunk so badly for so long that its not worth trying to conjure up a rival (Bucs/Rays)

But yeah, MSU-Michigan. I hate Dantonio for being the smug, lifeless prick that he is, but I find it also quite ironic and somewhat hilarious that he has slowly become everything that he's always hated about us. He treats Michigan with utter contempt and condescension whenever the topic even remotely comes up. You can tell whenever Michigan comes up that he looks at it and wonders how we'll ever possibly be a threat to him again.

He's had some damn good football teams the last few years. Won't deny that. But I hope Harbaugh beats him this year and makes some great "pride comes before the fall" comment in his post-game presser.

After he pisses Dantonio off in the post-game handshake, of course.

"I love rivalries. Michael or Jim. Paris or Nicole. Heidi or LC. It's so much fun. But, I guess if I'm really thinking about it and answering your question honestly, I'd have to go with LC. Heidi's a bad friend. And her skin, is terrible."

2nd favorite - Cubs vs. Cardinals.  As a die-hard Cubs fan who used to live in St. Louis, those games are just great.

Objectively second best - either Bama/Auburn football or Duke/UNC basketball.  The passion in both those rivalries is incredible.  Seahawks/Niners has also led to some very entertaining games lately, but that's too much of a johnny come lately rivalry to rate that high.

It's cooling off a little now with guys like Ray Lew, Ed Reed, and Polamalu gone, but for about 15 years it was by far the most physical football game you'd see anywhere.

While some of the circumstances have recently changed, I love the Red River Shootout. Texas and Oklahoma, neutral site in Dallas halfway between the schools. Stadium half in Longhorn burnt orange, half in Sooner red. Texas State Fair deep frying everything imaginable outside.

Plus I've always loved the similarities between Texas and Michigan. Great academic schools, traditional powers in football (now #1 and #2 all time most wins) and also Olympic sports, an in-state rival with a recent superiority complex, main rival from neighboring state that starts with an O. And Austin and Ann Arbor are both great cities,

Tough call. At one time it was Nebraska vs. Oklahoma but the B12 killed that. Now it would be a toss-up between Army-Navy and USC-UCLA. Great memories of watching those games as a kid.

I'm a big steelers fan so Steelers and Ravens. Browns fans don't like it but I really don't get hyped up for them like I do the Ravens. My hatred for them is right up there with OSU and MSU.

Northwestern / Iowa (fans)

I live in Scottsdale, even though I don't care for either ASU or UofA, I love watching the butt hurt and bragging between fan bases.

My fandom of professional sports has mellowed considerably, besides soccer. Arsenal-Tottenham is fun, but Tottenham sucks and it's not competitive. On a college basis, while there are many rivalries I admire, I don't really have favorites that don't involve Michigan. My favorite of the rest is probably Michigan-Notre Dame. May be they don't play on the field as much anymore, but there is a lot that the two schools compete for.

I had to scroll down far too low for this one. I didn't go to either school, but so many of my high school friends did that it was kind of a mini-reunion every Central/Western matchup. Always turned out to be a very fun day, even if the on-field competition wasn't Iron Bowl level.

No true 2nd but a bunch of honorable mentions. Cubs - Cardinals Iowa - Wisconsin...Splitting them up a few years back was asinine. Yanks - Red Sox Egg Bowl: Mississippi - Mississippi St. (8 OTs mid-oughts was crazy!) Army - Navy (figure it out Army!) 'Bama - Auburn Notre Dame - USC (when both competitive...I don't know why) Bears - Packers (when competetive, c'mon Chicago)
