OT: What sports do you enjoy watching regardless of what teams are playing?
Now that it's baseball season and the Stanley Cup Playoffs are in full gear, it got me thinking about my different levels of interest in different sports.
For me, I have started following the Tigers for the last 3 or 4 years, and have watched parts of every game this season. However, I don't think I've ever watched a nationally televised game between two teams if the Tigers aren't one of them. Even playoff baseball I'm not interested unless the Tigers are playing.
With hockey, I enjoy it but only really watch these couple of weeks when the Red Wings are in the playoffs. Again, don't really watch any games other than Red Wings.
Back in the day, my go-to answer would be college football. I used to love game days where Michigan played at noon and then there were a slew of top-25 battles in the afternoon. Recently--maybe in the last 2 or 3 years--I've stopped following college football outside of Michigan. It's strange, though, because Michigan football is still the team that I follow closest and care the most about.
At the end of the day, I'd have to say it's NFL for me now. This is mostly because I am very mentally invested in my fantasy teams. It makes for a weird viewing experience, because outside of the Lions, I truly don't care who wins 80% of the time, yet I can still watch just about any game and be entertained by seeing which player does well for whatever team is on.
So, MgoBoard, what are your personal preferences on the matter?
plain and simple. of course michigan football first and foremost, but enjoy the rest too. college football is the only reason we have the TV hooked up for 3 months/yr, disconnected the other 9 months.
yeah, that is the best sport on earth and i am always entertained watching it
I'll watch gameday in the morning, games all day and the west coast game at night.
I love it.
And now they're putting those SEC games late so it's even better than watching Fresno St./Hawaii, but I was perfectly fine with that game too.
I watch the games on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, whenever.
College football is unlike anything else and no one will be able to tell me different.
No other sport puts as much of a value on wins as college football, and not just wins, but how you win. Trying to be top 5.
NFL, if you lose, so what...as long as you win your division or stay in the wild card, you're good. There is not the same week to week emphasis.
In college football, if you lose, you're automatically MORE interested to see what has to happen so you can make up for the loss and stay in the hunt.
In college basketball, you want to win your conference (or conference tournament) for sure, that's exciting...but the bigger issue is how you're playing at the end of the season (assuming you're in the tournament).
If you're going to break out a portion of the season.
Playoffs in all of the big sports are obviously awesome for sports fans. No one can deny the World Cup.
But I feel like those answers are cheating.

I've been doing it my whole life...
...right?
You seem like a fantasy football enthusiast.
College football and the NBA.
I drive all over for work and will stop on occasion if I see a high school game or kids game just to watch. I have also really enjoyed watching LAX games with my kids playing it.

NHL, college football. I can watch other sports when it's not my team, but it's gotta be a bigger game.
EDIT: oh, and NFL. Not always on the mind at this time of year.
NFL because of betting/fantasy reasons but in terms of the sport there's nothing better than NHL playoffs. Greatest annual sporting event there is.
College football and NFL
college football, college basketball, NHL

Cycling, snooker, track and field, the occasional tennis.
Ten posts in and no beach volleyball answers? Interesting.

Any kind of hockey and the English Premire League
mma, college football, NHL, nfl
College basketball, College football, and that's it. Any other sports I watch are pretty team specific.

1. Boxing
2. College Football
3. College Basketball
To this day imo nothing compared to a good boxing match.
I can watch any MLB game, having MLB.tv allows me to enjoy watching dynamite pitching matchups from time to time. Just the other day before the brawl I was enjoying the Sale vs Ventura matchup in Chicago, and I loathe the White Sox but it was just too good to pass up.

College football & basketball I'll spend all weekend watching who ever.
I'll watch games from almost any sport. I watch Sunday/Monday night football all the time, the random NHL games on NBCSN, Whatever is on.
NBA is a total joke of a product, its as bad as watching the EPL with all the flopping and crying those guys do.
MMA is for the white trash, its taken over as the go to for Nascar fans as well. Can't stand either of them.
College football and T20 cricket.
College Football
Any lingerie football league team.
I like to buy game worn uniforms as well.
Changed to the Legends Football League, because their uniforms "totally aren't lingerie" any more. A girl I knew in high school plays for Chicago and is always posting/tweeting something about it.
Thats awesome!
No question about this one. The atmosphere every week at different games around the country is unmatched by any other sport.
about European football. I get up Saturday and Sunday to watch the Barkleys Premier League. Especially now near end of season to see who gets relegated. Of course college football rules but as a non baseball fan this is my diversion. IMHO auto racing is boring unless you turn right.
You are correct, watching NASCAR is boring as hell. But watching guys who work on their own cars and pay their own bills, is something completley diffrent. Regardless of which way they turn the wheel, I will watch that.
you go to the small local tracks? There are a couple near Madison but I've never gone. Not very into motor sports but what you say gives a little different perspective.
If you enjoy auto racing local tracks are great. As a fan I prefer dirt tracks. Once you get to know the drivers personalities and whose who it really is an amazing sport to watch.
I agree on the local tracks. I miss seeing the USAC sprints and midgets on ESPN. I can't remember if it was Saturday Night Thunder? The Night Before The 500 race at IRP used to be a big deal, probably still is there, but unfortunately is no longer televised.
I think this one is easy: any big time game. I enjoy watching the World Cup, Champions League, College Football, NFL, NHL, NCAA bball, PGA Tour, etc.
However, I will watch the Stanley Cup Playoffs and the big golf tournaments no matter who is in contention.

I have no horse in the NHL (come on Cleveland) but love watching. Usually end up routing for the home team in games because I love loud raucous crowds. I don't think there's a louder crowd in all of sports outside of the NHL especially playoffs. For example that Islanders game that was one an hour or so ago was absolutely electric. The first Winter Classic in Buffalo during the snowstorm had 80k insane screaming fans. Nothing else like it.
I'm kind of the same way. I don't watch much of the other major sports at all. NBA only when the Pistons are good, in the playoffs & deep in the playoffs. Zero regular season games. NHL only when the playoffs start & I'll watch from the beginning until Detroit's out. I'll watch about 10 regular season Tigers games a year but playoffs from start until done. Now, I used to gorge on CFB all day after the UM game but I'd watch maybe another NFL game after the Lions. Now? Totally reversed. I know why though & it's because of modern offenses. I hate the hyper read option zone spreads that are ubiquitous in CFB now. Absolutely hate them. The NFL is still largely "under center, power football" even with the escalation of the passing game. You still can't win without running the ball & it's done with a good ol' under center QB to HB handoff. CFB? Every team lines up 4 wide, shotgun & a HB every play. If they throw they mostly do it after faking a read option, etc. When they run its out of shotgun with the read option. Every QB can run, etc. I was born in the 80s so I'm a product of the 90s & that was when every team ran a pro Susan outside of Houston & BYU (lol). The run&shoot was this newfangled trickster offense but few teams ran it. Most teams lined it up under center & the best team won most of the time but if the team with less talent was truly inspired & playing harder they could win. Does anyone remember when Northwestern started using the primitive version of the read option in (roughly) 2000? It was insane! Yet, we can all recall how it asked them to beat us in 01 after the late A-Train fumble - we couldn't stop an offense that relied on trickery/fakes more than beating the man across from you. That offense today would be laughed at! Read option 0.70 Beta (lol) & shiz. Offenses like Oregon, Auburn, osu, Arizona, etc have turned me away from CFB on the whole. Michigan Football is priority & love A1 but unless it's a huge game or I'm left with nothing else to do I'm done after our game. I now watch the NFL all Sunday. 5 years ago I was only watching about half the Lions games a year! It's flipped back that bad. It's like I'm 10 again & Barry still played, back when it was "UM Saturday & NFL Sunday". It's sad but I know why I'm losing overall interest in CFB.
Football and the NBA finals.
Football, hockey and rugby.
Soccer if it's the World Cup or national squads.
