OT: What happens if Jameis Winston is charged between regular season and bowl selection?

Submitted by WichitanWolverine on

Assuming FSU rolls through Florida and their ACC Championship opponent, they'll likely retain their #2 BCS ranking.

However, I've read that FSU has a policy that any student-athlete charged with a felony is automatically ineligible to play. Now that Baylor is out of the picture, would the #3 team (likely the Buckeyes) back into the NC game if Winston ends up being charged? In other words, how much does player personnel factor into the BCS bowl selection nowadays?

Winston won't be charged either. There is a radio guy here in Columbus who is from Florida and there are rumors that Winston will not get charged because there is no evidence of rape and it is he said she said at this point. The accuser could make a case to sue the police down there but at this point odds are against the alleged victim because the department wants to hide the fact they covered up an alleged crime. The answer comes no later than Tuesday.

Jameis won't get charged and the fact that the victim lawyer has done a terrible job of handling the cases like leaking DNA result for PR purposes.

Regardless, I'm not commenting any further until I know the facts and the result. Assuming that he's guilty or she's trying to capitalize on his fame are in fact dangerous especially in cases like this.

Hmmmmm....seems to me that if there were allegations of impropriety by a police department, that might yield an added incentive for the prosecutor to move forward with an aggressive prosecution of the case to right the wrong.

At this point,  as you said, it is her word vs his.  All you would need is the slightest bit of corroborating evidence of her story and I think they proceed with the case.

After Baylor's blow out loss, should Ohio win out against MSU, they play in the NC game.  Just like ND last year, except Ohio actually would have won a conference championship game.

Don't shoot the messenger, but I've talked to a few people "in the know" in Tally and here's the story they've heard (and they aren't just FSU homers).  Apparently the accuser was Winston's "side girl".  His girlfriend who plays on the Rice women's basketball team was coming into town so he told this girl to lay low or tried to break it off.  The girl then called the cops and claimed rape, but by the time she was interviewed by them had calmed down and, hence, the description of the suspect being between 5'9-5'11 with straight hair.  She later dropped the charges and seemingly ceased to pursue the claim until the recent TMZ expose.  Well, you say, the Tallahassee PD obviously threatened her into dropping the charges.  Why would they?  At the time Winston was a 3rd string QB who looked just as likely to go play baseball the next year as he was to be a contributor on the team.

Anyways, that's what I've been told so just throwing in my two cents.

Your last point is wrong. Winston was a top-rated qb recruit (if not THE top rated qb recruit in 2012). I know Urban tried to poach him last minute and tried really hard. There was a ton of hype heading into this last offseason about how good he looked in practice and on the scout team at FSU during his redshirt year. By the time of the alleged incident anyone in Tally who followed their Seminoles would have known who he was. And when he won the starting job no one was really surprised. Like Herbstreit said recently, the difference between Manziel and Winston (both had ridiculous redshirt frosh years) is that Winston lived up to the crazy hype while Manziel seemingly came out of nowhere (3 star recruit who few knew even at A&M).

He was a top rated recruit, but go look at that class and see how many of those guys are actually playing.  Its basically Trevor Knight and some guys who played because of injuries.  Winston was not the top ranked Qb either.  The top ranked QB by far was Gunner Kiel and we seen how that turned out.  He wasn't a star back when this happened.  That's a fact.

You missed the point. The original poster was arguing that no one would have really known who Winston was or that he was in line to be a big player for the Noles. The fact that his stardom materialized this year (as opposed to next or at all) is insignificant. My point was simply that there was a lot of hype about Winston when the alleged incident happened. Hence, it is very easy to believe that the Tally PD would have been sensitive to the idea of making it publicly known that Winston was being investigated for rape or sexual assault. We don't know what happened. But let's not rewrite history.

Go blue and beat ohio north. Yes, Ohio north because many of our fair weather fans have basically given the buckeyes cheaper tickets than their own stadium. All I know is if I'm sitting with a group of buckeyes during THe Game I will buy these seats again when things are better and bitch slap the people who sold them on stub hub and made my experience suck. Anyway I'm sorry. I forgot how our soft ass society doesn't like meanness. Carry in with our bitching.

For an at large selection it probably would, but if FSU and Bama win out they will be in the title game.  Besides its not like a lot of FSU's success isn't based on their dominant defense and the rest of their offense.

This. It was pretty amazing to watch one of the Heisman recap segments last night on ESPN (during the Washington game I think) and all of a sudden McCarron was discussed as the favorite. Not a contender, the favorite. No mention of Winston at all. I was shocked. It's like ESPN has already decided they don't care whether charges or filed or not and Winston is out of the race. At least according to the panelists who were on.

has no business winning the Hesiman but he probably will because of Bama winning.  The fact that he's likely get drafted at 4th/5th round says it all about his QB play.

Honestly, the best player in the country is probably Khalil Mack. He is a one man wrecking crew and OSU had a lot of trouble handling him.  Mack is projected as a top 10 pick which is amazing considering he had only one scholarship offer coming out of HS.  And he was a 3rd team all-state in Florida. How did the big 3 miss on him? More importantly, how did the mid major Florida schools miss on him???

student Policy also allows the administration to make exceptions in "special" circumstances. I imagine the administration thinks a title game is a special circumstance.

was going to appear.  It's probably in the back of everyone's mind.

I don't think it will have much effect.

1. If there isn't enough evidence, he won't be charged, even if it did happen.

2. Who and how good is FSU's backup?  That team is not just Jameis.  They are good all around and likely to still win without him.

The bigger uncertainty could be the Iron Bowl.  Auburn is pretty good and could give Bama a good run at home.  Question is, would Auburn jump ohio if they beat bama?

I follow fsu as my secondary team (because of marriage... am i a fan-in-law?) Coker looked pretty mediocre when I saw him play before the injury. when they put him in, the game began to have the guise of being competitive (aside from the scoreboard).

The spin has already begun to ensure a SEC! team in the title game. ESPN commentators suggesting if Auburn beats Bama and wins the SEC! title, they jump Ohio. Or FSU, even if still undefeated, gets voted out if Winston is suspended.

I think both are ridiculous.

Ohio doesn't deserve to play in the national title game. I mean when your schedule is filled with mediocre juggernauts like Illinois Indiana and Michigan you don't have a quality win yet unless they beat msu

There just aren't any great 1 loss teams that can jump them.  Ok St. lost to W.Virg.  Nobody believe Missouri is that good and they played no one non-conf. Auburn has no defense, was lucky to escape Georgia and didn't play anyone non conf either. Clemson would be in the discussion possibly if FSU hadn't hammered them.  A 1 loss FSU or Bama would be as well if that loss had come at the beginning of the year.

OSU seemingly getting everything it ever wants.

If Winston gets suspended, so be it. Let OSU take FSU's place. I have no doubt in my mind that Bama would take them to the woodshed and give every fan of that school a serious reality check.

Meyer will probably be having some chest pains after that game.

It's an allegation, which means the police will want to interview Winston more and other people about the event. Don't see anything happening either way before the bowl game. Probably bad judgment on both people's parts, whether or not it was really rape or revenge for breaking up with her.

As for Ohio, they have ONE quality win - vs. Wisconsin and only by 7 at home. Iowa is 7-4 and they won by 10 at home. FSU won huge at Clemson. Bama needs no additional credits (just win out).

Ohio would end up being like ND last year if they make the title game (but with fewer quality wins).

My big what if is.... What if Winston is suspended and they drop the Florida game or ACC championship?  Then say Big Bro or Little Bro knock off tOSU?  And somehow Bama loses in the iron bowl or drops the SEC Champ against Mizzou?

I know a lot of what ifs, but they are all feasible.  FSU losing to Florida/Duke w/o Winston, tOSU getting beat by Sparty, and Bama dropping the game against Auburn in a tight game.  Auburn goes on to win the SEC and Bama gets back in the NC game - again - without winning their conference.

Stanford losing last week and Baylor losing last night really put Bama in the championship game no matter what happens in their game next week if FSU/tOSU drop a game.
