We’re getting the gang back together
Can they still play? Would be really sweet if they could.
January 11th, 2022 at 8:30 PM ^
I have little doubt that Nic Lidstrom could still play well enough to man someone's 3rd or 4th line capably, if given time to get back in playing shape. But that wouldn't be good enough for him, personally. He retired because he was no longer the best defenseman on the planet.
But man, oh man would it be fun to watch him play again...
January 11th, 2022 at 9:48 PM ^
Listen and understand. Nic Lidstrom is out there. He can't be bargained with or reasoned with. He doesn't feel pity or remorse or fear. And he absolutely will not stop. Ever.
January 11th, 2022 at 4:10 PM ^
Heck yes!
January 11th, 2022 at 4:10 PM ^
"Lidstrom will primarily be based in his native Sweden, and be involved in "all aspects of hockey operations," according to Yzerman. That includes the evaluation of prospects in North America and Europe, and serving as a resource for the front office, scouting and coaching staffs, both with the Red Wings and Detroit's AHL-affiliate Grand Rapids Griffins."

I love the job Hakan Andersson has done for so long. I'm sure he and Nick will make a great team in finding good prospects for us. I wonder if Stevie asked Nick to give him an informal assessment of Seider back in 2019? I'm thinking Nick just might be pretty good at breaking down a defenseman's game...
January 11th, 2022 at 4:11 PM ^
When I read the thread title, I thought, just for a second, that the Red Wings might have signed Lidstrom on a short term contract to lace up his skates because of COVID-related roster problems.
January 11th, 2022 at 5:11 PM ^
you and i live in a world of hope, my friend
...
HE COULD STILL TOTALLY DO IT YOU GUYS
UPDATE: Stevie Y is one of us!
"We can do the team thing, too, if you want to talk about that," joked Yzerman, while introducing Lidstrom on Tuesday during a Zoom conference.

Bring back Federov as coach?
January 11th, 2022 at 4:14 PM ^
There's a reason they call Larionov the Professor
January 11th, 2022 at 4:21 PM ^
Why not both?
January 11th, 2022 at 4:43 PM ^
Find Dennis Polonich.
January 11th, 2022 at 5:35 PM ^
Pretty sure Igor is still in metro Detroit as well. His wife and daughters would often come into an old job of mine to shop and that was always a highlight.
January 11th, 2022 at 7:33 PM ^
Lidstrom and Larionov; my son's two favorite Red Wings.
January 11th, 2022 at 4:14 PM ^
Pleases me this does!
January 11th, 2022 at 4:15 PM ^
How swede it is.
January 11th, 2022 at 5:34 PM ^
You’re a meatball
January 11th, 2022 at 4:16 PM ^
From my avatar, you can deduce that I'm not excited at all!
There was a funny comment on the wings site along the lines of "Wings also hire Holmstrom to drive Lidstrom to the rink". I know Nick will be based in Sweden, but still.

Championship quality organization.

Hire Mike Vernon and Chris Osgood back as the new Team Ambassadors for Giving Patrick Roy The Business (c).
January 12th, 2022 at 12:01 AM ^
Plus a million points if I could. When I saw that, it was so satisfying. Roy totally deserved that.
January 12th, 2022 at 5:27 PM ^
That's another million to you!
CAPTION: Okay, champ, your Mom is over there with a Band-Aid and a cookie.
January 11th, 2022 at 4:39 PM ^
Love it.....
just wish we would have hired Spuddy before the damn Rangers got him. Blash has to go.
January 11th, 2022 at 5:23 PM ^
I don't think the team was good enough at the time to hire him. I think you'd want to be at least on the verge of making the playoffs, so he'd get you in. No point in wasting a few seasons of his tenure not making the playoffs.

Perfect Human

Igor will be coaching this team for the 2022-23 Stanley Cup run
January 11th, 2022 at 4:50 PM ^
Can he be player/VP? I'd take a 50-ish year old Nick Lidstrom at the point.
January 11th, 2022 at 5:05 PM ^
DDK makes me wish for a 50 year old Lindstrom. In the time it took me to type that he's turned the puck over at the blue line and some rookie is going the other way with it.
January 11th, 2022 at 5:05 PM ^
I understand the love for this, but does this actually work? Historically when former players run organizations I feel like it doesn't. I know Elway struck gold with Peyton Manning but I feel like this usually ends up in sadness. Hopefully I'm wrong.
January 11th, 2022 at 5:36 PM ^
I mean we did beg for our former player to come back and run the organization and he is currently doing a more than fine job of it.
January 11th, 2022 at 6:51 PM ^
Applies to Both Harbaugh and Yzerman
January 11th, 2022 at 5:24 PM ^
This is excellent news!!!
Username checks out, huh?

Smoothest defenseman I’ve seen. Welcome back #5. We had a helluva run from 93- 08 and we are on the way back.
January 11th, 2022 at 5:41 PM ^
if he can score from center ice, i'm sure he can be the president of ops from sweden
the ultimate class act, phenomenal player who wore the 'C' with excellence.
January 11th, 2022 at 6:06 PM ^
That goal changed everything!
January 11th, 2022 at 10:36 PM ^
I remember that goal like it was yesterday. Wings were down in that playoff series with the Canucks and I stayed up late to watch. I guess some would call a goal from center ice pure luck. I call it Nicklas doing his thing. Laser sharp precision. Everything was calculated and intelligent. Assassin of the highest degree and best defenseman of all time.
January 11th, 2022 at 6:03 PM ^
Sounds more like he'll be their 'European coordinator' than a real VP.
January 11th, 2022 at 6:27 PM ^
It they're going to start cranking out Seiders and Raymond's regularly then I am all for it!
January 11th, 2022 at 6:05 PM ^
Love this!
January 11th, 2022 at 7:00 PM ^
wow, I thought that guy was moving to Sweden and never coming back.
Well done Captain!
January 11th, 2022 at 7:15 PM ^
Smart hire.

The guy was a machine. Loved watching him play.
