I have little doubt that Nic Lidstrom could still play well enough to man someone's 3rd or 4th line capably, if given time to get back in playing shape.  But that wouldn't be good enough for him, personally.  He retired because he was no longer the best defenseman on the planet.

But man, oh man would it be fun to watch him play again...

"Lidstrom will primarily be based in his native Sweden, and be involved in "all aspects of hockey operations," according to Yzerman. That includes the evaluation of prospects in North America and Europe, and serving as a resource for the front office, scouting and coaching staffs, both with the Red Wings and Detroit's AHL-affiliate Grand Rapids Griffins."

When I read the thread title, I thought, just for a second, that the Red Wings might have signed Lidstrom on a short term contract to lace up his skates because of COVID-related roster problems.

From my avatar, you can deduce that I'm not excited at all!

There was a funny comment on the wings site along the lines of "Wings also hire Holmstrom to drive Lidstrom to the rink".  I know Nick will be based in Sweden, but still.

I understand the love for this, but does this actually work?  Historically when former players run organizations I feel like it doesn't.  I know Elway struck gold with Peyton Manning but I feel like this usually ends up in sadness.  Hopefully I'm wrong.

I remember that goal like it was yesterday.  Wings were down in that playoff series with the Canucks and I stayed up late to watch.  I guess some would call a goal from center ice pure luck.  I call it Nicklas doing his thing.  Laser sharp precision.  Everything was calculated and intelligent.  Assassin of the highest degree and best defenseman of all time.
