OT: Vote for Sleeping Bear Dunes as the most beautiful place in America
Normally I wouldn't post something like this, but it could be some good publicity for the state.
Rumors have it that Sleeping Bear is going neck to neck with Asheville, NC.

I don't think either of those places would be in my top 5-10...but good for Sleeping Bear dunes and will definitely vote for it...

Even be in the same conversation as Yosemite Valley or the east face of the Grand Tetons
August 12th, 2011 at 9:23 PM ^
I don't think I've ever been somewhere that competes with Yosemite. Yosemite is just on a completely diffferent level.

Is spectacular and a special place. Special like Up North in the summer time.
When I look at it from the top of the Mt. Rose pass it gives me that funny feeling, kind of like when I used to climb the rope in gym class.

Th Tetons are amazing! But.....I'd do anything for Michigan!
August 12th, 2011 at 9:24 PM ^
and lift the state of Michigan upon our intellectually superior shoulders!

Kalalau Valley (including the trail in) is by far the most beautiful place I've been in the US. Not sure how sleeping bear dunes is up there. Lanikai beach doesn't compare to kalalau either, it's just much easier to access.
Maybe some voting help from some internet bots now that the espn college football traditions poll is done...

Sleeping Bear Dunes is cool, but it's the Tetons or Glacier National Park for me.
August 12th, 2011 at 9:46 PM ^
Augusta, GA...followed closely by the Grand Tetons/Jackson Hole...now if only I could play that certain golf course....
August 12th, 2011 at 9:48 PM ^
The Grand Canyon from the south rim brought me to tears. Only thing to ever do that in Michigan was Kordell Stewart. Bastard.

Adirondack Park in upstate NY.

i was just at sleeping bear dunes a couple week ago. a lot prettier than i was expecting. the hike in 91 degree weather, not so much.

yeah, driving up from AZ is beautiful, that is the most amazing place ive ever been in the US

Of the 10 or so national parks I've been to, I'd have to say that Bryce was the most stunning, even compared to the Grand Canyon. But I've never been to Glacier or Yellowstone...
Sleeping Bear is certainly gorgeous, but I wouldn't call it stunning or mind-blowing like Bryce or Grand Canyon.
August 13th, 2011 at 12:43 AM ^
Yellowstone is not really pretty but it makes a name for itself with the wildlife and geysers.
August 13th, 2011 at 1:13 AM ^
By national-park standards, the scenery at Yellowstone isn't all that gorgeous. But seeing a herd of 100 bison cross the road is very, very cool - as well as the fact that you are standing on top of a supervolcano when you're there (which lets off steam in the form of geysers). Very unique.

While sleeping bear dunes is great. I don't think it can hold a candle to pictured rocks. I had the best camping trip of my life there. I need to hike it from end to end next time. That being said i cast my vote for the dunes. Need to help the states economy any way we can.
August 13th, 2011 at 11:39 AM ^
When I heard about Sleeping Bear being on the list I immediately thought Munising Bay was prettier and I had completely forgot about the pictured rocks being there.

Sleeping Bear isn't even the most beautiful place in Michigan. How could it be the most beautiful place in the US?
August 12th, 2011 at 10:02 PM ^
Two days ago, and it's absolutely beautiful. The scenic drive there is awesome. That being said, it really shouldn't be competing with places like Yosemite. That being said, why isn't Yosemite on here?
August 12th, 2011 at 10:15 PM ^
The park is right down the road from me. Vote vote vote we need more people through the park the numbers of park visitors have been steadily declining until just last year they rose 10%.
On the right weather and atmosphere days the views are as spectacular as you can find.

Napali Coast on Kauai. Just amazing.

If Sleeping Bear Dunes was brought to us by Arby's and had stripes on its sleeves we might have a different reaction to naming it the most beautiful place in America,
August 12th, 2011 at 11:14 PM ^
Sleeping Bear Dunes is a beautiful place. Don't underestimate the clean clear fresh water and windswept sanddunes.
August 13th, 2011 at 12:06 AM ^
I'm sorry, but Sleeping Bear Dunes can't even hold Glacier National Park's jockstrap.

Never mind I can't figure out how to embed video.

WHOOOOOO, NIAGRA FALLS!!!

Sleeping Bear Dunes is not even the most beautiful place in Michigan. For all those who do not know there is a northern peninsula to the state that is a whole lot better.
August 13th, 2011 at 12:39 AM ^
Pictured Rocks is awesome. Our state is blessed with a lot of pretty shoreline.
August 13th, 2011 at 12:47 AM ^
I love how this gets marked as flamebait. I would just like the Upper Peninsula to get more respect. What is wrong with that?
August 13th, 2011 at 2:26 AM ^
You're right Da Pritchard Rocks are amazing, ya know.
It’s a proven fact Rich Rod hates the Upper Peninsula, he never done any recruiting in Da UP. I hope Hoke will show Da Yoopers the respect they deserve, even Da Cheese Heads.
August 13th, 2011 at 11:38 AM ^
Ha first of all, nice try at an impression. Not sure who it is supposed to be of but nice try. Second, I was not talking about just Pictured Rocks. There are many other places to see here.
August 13th, 2011 at 12:43 AM ^
Crater Lake would be my #1, but I've never been to Yosemite or Pictured Rocks.
August 13th, 2011 at 12:45 AM ^
don't underestimate Acadia National Park in Maine. that's a nice place as well.

It is only second to my tailgate spot at 7:00 AM on a crisp fall day with a 3:30 kick.

I'm from Leelanau County and am perfectly content with the Dunes not getting any more national attention. The less crowded, the better. That's the charm of our little corner of the world.
August 13th, 2011 at 3:13 AM ^
for the place but I could vote for the Sufjan Stevens song about the place as a possible #1. Oh Sleeping Bear.
That stretch of the Lake MI coast is beautiful and is breathtaking at sunset--in my top 10 I suppose. I concur with south rim of grand canyon comment and would throw out Juneau AK as another place on my list but I have not been out west much. Hoover dam was cool and I like chicago, nyc, Savannah and the big easy as big towns go.
