U.S. lineup announced: Howard; Johnson, Gonzalez, Besler, Beasley; Beckerman, Jones; Zusi, Bradley, Davis; Dempsey (c)
Dude looks pretty good after all these years.
A ton of Facebook/Internet references to WWII
WW1 went pretty well too...
back to back world war champs
Gonzalez starting over Cameron. WTF?
starting too is even more WTF
Yeah thats scary. Cameroon was at fualt for the second goal because of ball watching, that is pretty much omars biggest weakness.
Is the field flooded too? Not literally, but how wet/muddy are we talking?
This is hardly the place for a Silly Walk.
That's very difficult. Not to the point the ball is going to stop in spots (yet) but at the point its going to hydroplane. Nightmare for goalies. JK will be telling them to shoot low as much as possible today.
In terms of shooting this is an advantage for Germany who will get off more shots. In terms of passing it could help the U.S. since they will have less possession and you hope it disrupts Germany's tick tack passes. It does favor long passes in the air and speed however - which Germany is fine with.
That field is going to be a dump an hour from now
Here's a chart of all possible outcomes today:
Rules of thumb: Win or draw guarantee advancement, close loss is still cool as long as the other game ends in a draw or a relatively close win for Portugal. If Ghana gets up a goal and US down 1, it gets complicated.
Don't we already have a thread for today's games?
You should just log off and come back tomorrow
You're right, the first two games I was not online, I was in a bar, and we won and drew. So I'll log off now. See you in a couple of hours.
We have one for the Day...and we always have a separate one for the US.
Last time no one started it and we went down 0-1...I started the US thread at halftime and we came back.
OK, that works.
Must not be fit after the Portugal game. I have NO faith in Gonzo.
Unfortunately Klinsmann has always said Gonzo is the back up to Cameron and Brooks replaces Besler.
Wow, the "I believe that we will win" chant is really awful.
But let's do this USA!!
I like that chant.
I agree. I don't think that we can become an elite football nation without elite cheers. Outlaw chants are weak. They need to spend some time at Yost.
I spent the last two weeks in Brazil, and the English speaking Brazilians love it. They were co-opting it for their game against Cameroon, but slightly changed to "I believe Brasil will win!" Good times.
Honestly, I didn't love it at first, but hearing half the crowd cheer it in Natal was kinda awesome in person, screaming drunk or not.
If that happened here, it would be a national emergency. Except if you live in Seattle.
Little bummed that there's no liveblog for this. Oh well. Let's go USA!
that we will tie?
Can't believe he's seeing the field. Maybe he's a better swimmer than Diskerud...
There are no PKs in this round. In theory if Ghana wins close and US loses close we could go to something as lame as a toin coss.
love those US warmups... damn
And you can get the white jacket on sale right now if you're an XL....almost bought it yesterday.
Helpful infographic from SBNation:
Roster choices will be thrown into the fire. Get the result or face harsh criticism
Very difficult for me to swallow Brad Davis at 32 is better than Landon Donovan at 32, or 31 whatever he is as a spot starter in game 3.
Davis and Gonzalez? What in all the holy fuck is going on?
Don't you feel like a dumbass for giving me crap about saying Cameron is not ready for this much pressure? Obviously Klinsmann agreed with me.
Beautiful first touch
Please tie Ghana and Portugal....
Pitch is so sloppy. And Germany is so good
So...yeah if that last game had ended 30 second earlier it would have been cool.
3 minutes in and I dont believe the U.S. has put 2 passes together.
By this slow pitch
The ESPN one took a while to load at work, but quality is great.
Shows once again how impressive Ghana is, as they played Germany quite level.
Damn the field in Recife is DRENCHED (friends at the game tell me it's even worse than it probably even looks on TV)... I think that favors the US since it kinda screws up the German's ability to pass-- maybe it's just wishful thinking... regardless of the German passing being limited or not, we can't spend the entire first half onour side of the pitch...
Hard to watch
Fortunate not to be down a goal already ... or two
Yeah, this could be going better.
Getting dominated a bit here for the first 10 minutes...a few scary plays
It's the guy who didn't call the handball in the Mex vs Cro game...
We looked awful the first couple minutes f Portugal game too. Here's hoping we can turn it around
This is going to be like the Ghana game. Portugal was due to a miscue not total domination- we had possession vs Portugal. We have almost none today... just like Ghana between minute 5 and 80.
I think Ghana was an abberation but that Germany is way better than either two teams
Good grief. If it's going to be like this for 90 minutes, we're going to get shelled.
good job Gonzalez!
Playing for a tie. So all those hopes can go out the wayside
Even if they were the U.S. doesnt have the skill to possess so you cannot expect them to advance to our 30 yard line and then pass the ball backwards for 3 minutes.
not the best start
Brad Davis might get replaced in first half if they start to dominate him on the right side too. I am a huge JK fan but Donovan would not get erased like Davis is. He is out of his depth.
Nice build up and shot
Solid shot from Zusi there.
We clearly don't have the ball skills of the contenders in this tournament, but you have to admit, we shoot from distance awfully well.
Have been terrible
Was just about to type that. That looked like a low level college player first touch. That was not a difficult pass to handle - great part of the field. Touch it down and shoot. Small things like that make me wonder what is going on with this guy this tourney.
We have settled down and are starting to move the ball around nicely. I'd like to see this continue to develop. The counter seems to be there as well.
Helps both teams, this has been one of the most open first half of the tourney
One country is a little more sensitive than most about bringing up embarrassing actions of the past, and the other hates ties with a passion, so this isn't terribly surprising.
A tie would be the best result from that game, but if someone is going to win... let it be Portugal. Just keep the scorig to a minimum.
I know but if someone ought to win that game, may as well be the portuguese, as they have the stiffest goal differential to overcome.
Portugal scores! It's 1-0.
Portugal 1-0 or tied would work great for us.
Huge for us. Hopefully Portugal doesn't wake up and realize they're Portugal and score 5 goals
Jermaine Jones just has been a revelation ... so happy to see this progress by him.
I am laughing so hard at the Kermit memes taking over twitter the past 3 days
Dafuq you mean. Landon Donovan, Mia Hamm, and Norman Schwarzkopf. There, bitches.
How dare you leave David Beckham out?
Because he's French, duh.
well we are 40 minutes in folks - if you said draw with Germany and Portugal up 1-0 you'd say HELL YES.
How does that yellow card effect the U.S. on defense?
If you had told me we'd lose Jozy 20 minutes into the tournament and Bradley would be the 3rd best midfielder I'd think we'd have gone 0-3-0.
Any sport that makes me cheer for a tie is a wussy one!
- some American somewhere
Poland would have happily settled for a tie against Germany in 1939
Poland was just the pitch. The tie in '39 was between the USSR and Germany
Halftime and we are 0-0 with Portugal ahead by 1. This is not a bad situation at all.
This wet grass seems to be helping a lot. Let it rain!!!!
wow all these chances from Portugal
Solid B for the first half, I think. We're tied in a game where nobody's trying to tie, we've fended off the German advances pretty well and created an occasional chance of our own. Not bad.
that video jacks me up
So far so good
I'd be screaming for Diskerud to replace Bradley. He's done nothing in 2.5 games.
However, I have to believe he's going to come out of this funk and get his shit together.
He's our heartbeat in a lot of ways...need him to step it up.
So true. Something is up with him. Any injury rumors?
Yeah, I don't want to pile on the guy, but he just seems out of synch with his teammates, not anticipating their actions well.
It is not even his distribution that is off - he has mishandled simple balls. His first touch is bad. Something seems amiss.
That first half felt like the Ghana game again, only minus the first-minute goal. Getting killed on possession again, but the D has been rock solid. The crappy field conditions may be helping, but still, marking has been excellent and Howard has always been in the right position.
Ghana was sloppy passing and falling back on their heels. This game they've looked a little rattled/frantic at times but have played well.
Or just not fit?
in the first half. Hopefully, we can get an early one somehow in the 2nd half and sit on the lead. Otherwise, a tie would be good also.
Gonzalez - awesome play
Not Brady, but Carr. This game looks like it's coached by Lloyd Carr.
Play not to win, but not to lose!
lose like a B. Game. Over.
This is what's wrong with soccer and why Americans don't like the sport. We play without balls and advance!
Were you yelling at Hoke for playing not to lose vs Alabama a few years ago?
Because this is the soccer equivalent.
No, I expected Hoke to go out aggressive. What do you tell the team? Bama is awesome, you are not and please lose by a few? KThanksBye.
Why can't we be aggressive and try for a win?
The US is playing for a 1 or 2 nothing loss. That's just sad and un-Amercian. This is why scooer is not even remotely popular. We are all praying for a 1-0 loss. WTF?
How are you not on Klose. The guy is a goal machine.
Every other touch
damn. Great first save though.
Only so much Howard can do
damn it all
Germany deserve this game of course - we just hope they deserve it only 1-0.
3 Goals differential.... and! Ghana ties!
STAY TIED GHANA PORTUGAL
Following on Gamecast it says we only have two shots? Lol
If Ghana wins 2-1 are we out?
If our game holds as well, yes
I don't like to hear that Ghana is tied up. I was fine with Portugal being ahead. Ghana is much closer to us in goal differential. If they go ahead, we'll be virtually tied.
Yeah, this. Ghana can tie it up in the 90th minute, not right now. I got kicked in the dick last night and I'm gonna get kicked in the dick again today. I just know it.
Can Bradley look worse enough that you sub him out?
So confused about who to root for, USA ties and I'm rooting for Portugal, then Germany scores and Ghana does the same and I go from hoping Portugal wins for one to rooting for Ghana, to being scared of Ghana scoring again... @.@
Root for Portugal. They're extremely unlikely to make up the goal difference (they lost 4-0 to Germany).
Portugal winning by 1 was much better then this. 1 Ghana goal and the U.S. is out currently.
Can control the ball
U.S. is really hacking out there.
They've got their win, let us be!
Holy balls gets Bradley out of there. Any ball that comes to him automatically gets sent to Germany.
We need to settle down. Put together a few passes and get some chances.
They're exhausted. We've essentially been playing 13 guys this tournament. Lack of depth gets to you in game 3.
You've really got to wonder what FIFA was thinking in giving the two teams that had to play in Manaus one less day of rest here. That's a double punishment.
This half has been a massacre
Michael Bradley has been horrible... I realize we have to keep him in there but my God someone kick him in the nuts to get him going.
3 of the 4 midfielders you can't really replace since Jones has been the U.S> best player, Beckerman has a specific role, and Bradley is supposed to be good. I'd like to put Yedlin in here for fresh legs but they already subbed for his position. A part of me wants to put Jones in at Bradley's position but Jones is needed to backtrack...and put Yedlin out wide...
or you could sub Donovan in for Bradley...oh wait.
A Portugal here would be very soothing.
Dempsey diving and twellmen defending him.
2 US players down wow. No concussions please.
Ohh Florida OL flashbacks...
For basketball fans that reminded me of Vinnie Johnson and Adrian Dantley I believe in the late 80s early 90s?
'87 Conference finals at Boston - game 7.
The AD-VJ collision was a massive head-on collision. This was bad, but was a glancing blow compared to that train-wreck, IMO.
No we are fucking each other up on the same team. Things feel not good right now.
Twillman is trying to kindly say Donovan should be on this team. Green makes no sense - he looked lost in the 2 warmups.
WHERE IS WONDO
13 minute to go. NOTHING CHANGE WORLD. (Portugal you are allowed to score 1 goal)
I guess now the important match is Portugal vs Ghana...
Cristiano finally comes through for the US.
I loooooooove you Cristiano Ronaldo.
So we are in unless Ghana scores twice in 10 minutes folks!
Or if Portugal scores twice more.
Yedlin for Jones to protect vs yellow card?
YESSS!!! That was Ronaldo's way of saying sorry for fucking us last game.
Guys Gonzalez has had a very good game. JK made the right call here.
nope yedlin for Zusi. I am surprised he'd risk a Jones yellow in the final 7 minutes.
Through the varied quality of the video (and I am sure I saw it after everyone else as a result of this) on the WatchESPN App right now, that collision still looked pretty damn painful. Hopefully, both players are alright.
Otherwise, I've tried in good conscience to do some significant work for the last 80 minutes or thereabouts, but I can't look away but for more than a few moments at a time here.
I'm telecommuting today. Had a meeting for the first half hour of the second half. I'm on my couch with a headset, watching the game, talking with everyone else in the office.
Totally a coincidence that I scheduled my telecommuting day today, I swear it.
So we're in the sweet 16?
Just me or does this guy sound exactly like Jesse Palmer?
Yes but more clueless, somehow.
Looking ahead to Belgium it will be a Germany-lite. Not quite as good but very attack oriented and a lot of youth. Some very creative individual players. Not sure about their defense. They came in the tourney as a dark horse to win it all but have thus far not been playing at a high level. If you have to play a 1st place team they are not a bad choice - other options would be France, Brazil, Argentina, Holland, Columbia for example.
Ironically US and Belgium were set to play a closed scrimmage in Brazil but due to traffic it was cancelled.
Germany-lite is about right. Won't complete 10 million passes a game like Germany but a bit quicker in the front 4.
Very tough team to beat though.
4' extra in each game.
damn haha that would have been cool
I BELIEVE THAT WE GO THROUGH!
It turned out to be a really balanced group. Germany was the best but not by an overwhelming margin. All four teams played fairly well overall. Great job by Kilnsmann and his guys to survive this.
