OT - "Urban Meyer said JT Barrett has to undergo counseling thru OSU & "forfeited his scholarship for one term"

On top of being suspended for the Minnesota game on November 7th.

Since JT is an out-of-state student, a semester's worth of tuition would be roughly ~$13,700, which is excluding room-and-board because I don't know if that is included in the punishment.

EDIT: Barrett will be losing his scholarship for the summer term, which is based on credit hours and not a flat tuition. (https://twitter.com/GerdOZone/status/661236358334296064). So... a 3 credit hour course is roughly ~$3,300. IIRC, when Mewhort and Stoneburner's scholarships were revoked it was about $6,600 lost (2 summer courses).

JT Barrett lost his "summer aid in 2016." And he can potentially earn it back. I still think a 1-game suspension more than fits the crime here, but I think this whole losing his summer aid business is just media propaganda to make Urban Meyer look better after the Bill O'Reilly interview. It is a punishment with no teeth that sounds a lot worse than it really is. JT Barrett will not lose his scholarship for the fall or spring term and all the rights that go with being a scholarship athlete (like training table). Nor should he. Barrett just got busted at the wrong time after Urban Meyer gave a poor response to a crappy Bill O'Reilly interview. Just a pawn in the game.

Fall camp that starts in August is technically part of the fall semester. Spring practice is during the spring/winter (whatever they call it) semester. There are no official team activities during the summer. There are technically voluntary workouts with strength and conditioning, and I don't know if you even need to be enrolled to participate. Coaches have limited if any official contact with players during the summer by NCAA rules. Only recently did they start relaxing those rules for basketball, but I don't think it has happened for football yet. And it is a lot easier to be technically enrolled for summer financially than it is for a fall or winter semester as usually summer tuition is cheaper and often charged by credit hour depending on the institution.

at Ohio State. The whole incident still bespeaks poor decision-making by the young quarterback. God forbid, he might throw an ill-timed interception that compromises a game, in which case a one game suspension would hardly track a response from the faithful, except to pile on with greater antipathy and suggestions that he never play another down.

But, have the kid try to back out of a publicly advertised police checkpoint for motorist sobriety in the vicinity of well-known Columbus nightlife, and your friendly public servants are more than willing to let your slippery subject be released into the hands of his competitive understudy.

All is well in love and an undefeated season with the defense of your national championship on the line when the cops give you a misdemeanor ticket for multiple possible offenses instead of mandatory detainment for sobriety after blowing well beyond the limit for an underage drinlker, a charge simply ignored for ourintrepid dual threat signal caller.

Of course, misdemeanor offenses result in only single game suspensions in Buckeyeworld, where the idea of a misdemeanor offense depends on which school you face on the schedule after your bye. Since it's the Golden Gophers, no big deal, Cardale Jones can this without worry.

It's a Michigan Monday in the no fly zone. And, of course, Tony Gerdemen, reminds that a financial penalty attached to the Barrett suspension could simply go away under certain circumstaces. Wonder if Tony has a snarky rationale for chiming in with that disclosure. Redemption or bust. At least, Barrett didn't put the school in hot water with the NCAA by driving some brand new car with dealer plates, as was initially reported. Now there's real redempton. I think that alone ought to earn Barrett the return of his summer aid package. Or may be he could what other students do, and get a summer job. Nope, probably not happening.

Doesn't mean that Check Points aren't bull shit.   He got caught drunk driving, he will be punished by the courts for his mistake. Just like you or I would if we had similar poor judgement.  The same punishment would happen almost anywhere. What should they do?  Kick him off the team, ruin his life because he is a young man making young man mistakes?  I hope you hold yourself and our team to the same standard you do others.

This is not right.  They get suspended and lose a game check first offense.  Previously they had no suspension and 2 game check penalty.  That being said, employers should not get free service because an employee did something when they aren't at work.  Don't like your employees actions?  Fire him or let the courts enforce laws.

Let's just say he does get his scholarship for this semester revoked. How much of a scam would that be? I understand it's not a normal "job" because Barrett wants to play, but imagine you screw up as an employee and your boss says, "You're not fired. You're just working without pay for the next couple months." Uh, yeah, OK. Fuck you, I'm out.

I did not. I mean, JT is a first-time offender. A one-game suspension is pretty par for the course throughout college football and I don't understand how anyone could have expected more. I know we as Michigan fans would like to see his missing more time, but that won't happen.

It doesnt say WHICH term he will lose.  My assumption initially way it would be the next term he'd be enrolled in school for but what it it's not?  What if the term he's losing is the one say....the semester AFTER his eligibility is gone or he decides to turn pro?

The punishment would sure look harsh but maybe it isnt as bad as it seems.  After all, he might be like Cardale and not really want to "play school" if he doesnt have to.

I have been trying not to be sanctimonious about the situation because our own players have had DUI/OVI/whatever-the-acronym-is-at-the-time isues before. But now I definitely think we can agree that Urban has properly addressed the situation. As fans we think of things in terms of game suspensions, but as people we need to understand that counseling is a very good response to this incident, and we should hope JT doesn't have any alcohol problems beyond the normal 20-year-old college student.

Also, taking away his scholarship for a semester is pretty harsh, but warranted for somebody who has a higher standard to uphold in order to keep that scholarship. If a person did have underlying alcohol issues, I would say the counseling is the best response but that taking their scholarship might be unduly harsh. But here, I think it's a good response (and Urban knows JT better than any of us, obviously).

I imagine a good percentage of first-time offenders change their behavior after getting caught.  I'm guessing Uber doesn't look so expensive/inconvenient to future NFL draft picks once they've gone through this.

A second offense shows an offender with a dangerous lack of self-serving adaptability.

one term = one quarter of football? Also, would this be the Fall term, Spring term, or a term to be determined later, but probably sometime in the future after declaring for the NFL draft?

The one game suspension seems to be the standard across college football for DUI/OVI arrests. The loss of scholarship for a semester is consistent with previous alcohol related issues- like Jake Stoneburner and Jack Mewhort. So, the punishment seems to suggest that there is nothing more to the story.

1 game is the going rate in college football.  Suspending his scholarship seems too harsh.  That's like a $15k penalty.

that Barrett also had a run in with police last year after having an altercation with his girlfriend. Dude already has a pattern of bad behavior.

with all the comments about Jameis and how Urban would have dismissed him from the team.  Urban responds with a light punishment in terms of time missed, but a punishment that on the surface looks pretty harsh to the player.  I have a feeling that someone is doing PR work for Urban and Ohio State.

Not harsh at all. Does anyone actually believe he'll pay any of that himself? Let's be real. Hell, if he can't find bagmen to do it, just do a GoFundMe and he'll make that ten times over guaranteed.
