OT(?) - Thoughts on trolls

Submitted by MGolem on

Yes I am a hothead, I admit to that, but does it bother anyone else to the point of homicidal rage when supporters of other teams crash our beloved all things Michigan site? I posted a diary titled 'Notre Dame in the rearview mirror' (listed above) and I have had more hits from an Irish fan than from the Mgoblog community at large. In all seriousness, who appreciates rival posters and who wants them eradicated? Maybe I am a nut but I can't think of a bigger waste of time than cruising another teams blog and posting argumentative comments. Am I alone?

Worse than the fair weather fans who don't think they are fair weather fans are the MGoVaginas who can't take any negative comments about their team that just got blown out 31 zip by one of their rivals...hilarious, this is Michigan! of course we are still elite! This is Michigan!

Neither pisses me off as much as the self-loathing Michigan fans who think that: (1) every minor transgression at Michigan is a major scandal, while everything that our rivals do should be forgiven because all schools have problems; and (2) Michigan football has permanently fallen from elite status, the future looks dismal, and the only solution is to fire a coach (or all of our coaches) every year as an expression of our rage.

Mmmm Hmmm

A twist on your #1: we (as Michigan fans) are not allowed to criticize or mock the actual, reported, or even suspected improprieties at other schools because we are not winning (particularly against those schools) on the field. A criticism is valid or not without regard to who says it. At times on this board, it goes way beyond weeding out the sour grapes...

Don't forget the fair weather, self loathing fan who gets on message boards trolling his own team with absolutely "Zero" research to support their point. Then when you try to convey a point (respectfully)with facts, or stats of the actual game in question, they start spouting out general comments they heard from the media, and talk about things that happened over the last 2 years. .... Then call you a homer!! Lol But, hey, I guess everyone has their own opinions!!

Trolls?  Generally they are a pretty easy way to get a lot of XP and build up your warrior character in most video games.   Harking back to D&D however it really depended on how much of an ass your dungeon master wanted to be and how often he brought out his weighed 12 sided dice.  But I don't blame that on the troll itself, but more on the DM.

So I am pretty ok with them.

Hey, jackweed, I get more action in a week than you've had in your entire life. I've got houses in L.A., Paris and Vail. In each one, a 70 inch plasma screen. So I suggest you wipe that stupid smile off your face before I come over there and SMACK it off! You feeling strong, my friend? Call me elf one more time.

Just think of how boring and mundane their lives must be to have nothing better to do than troll. I kind of feel sorry for them.

(I'll be over at Eleven Warriors if anyone needs me)

so long as they're not simply being obnoxious.

These boards have become way too echo-chambery over the last few years, a few well-argued dissenting opinions would be a very good thing for the whole community.

While I still read for the actual content, I've found myself avoiding the boards like the plague in recent times, while more neutral-site communities like the cfb subreddit and EDSBS provide much deeper discussion because of the variety of opinions.

What you're sayin'. It's just a fact of nature that those who are down get gutter-kicked by passers bye as a matter of custom. Very Darwinian when the mighty or anybody else falls off their perches. The perception is we are Humpty Dumpty though, ain't nothin' we can do about that.

My favorite football team just got rogered 0-31 to a prime-time national TV audience by Notre Dame - of all teams- in the final game the two will play in probably forever, simultaneously ruining my weekend and making me grumpy ever since. It's Tuesday and I'm still trying to make sense of it all.   And UM playing "Winston here" (Miami of the Ohio) this Saturday isn't going to make things better.

Hey, you know, maybe these trolls you speak of are actually little angels or fairies trying to help?

its to be expected and some can be funny, but I can't stand fans telling other fans how to be a true fan. plus I suggest some people to not take sports so seriously. trust me my life is far better these days for it.

In the diary post 'Notre Dame in the rearview mirror' and tell me what you think this person is attempting to do? Like I said, I am a hothead so maybe I am getting more angry than I should but this isn't the insight of some other person, this is a deliberate attempt to denegrate my post and then do it again.

Agree with this 100% and totally disagree with original poster. If a rival fan is coming to cause trouble, then of course that is annoying. However, if someone is just coming to get info, share info, offer an outsider's opinion then I feel that is just as useful and interesting as others. Personally the thing that annoys me more is when a rival fans offers a reasonable post and someone attacks them just because they are a fan of another team.
