OT - Tennis Players' Arms

Submitted by JeepinBen on

Caught the end of the match today, and I've always known that tennis players have 1 dominant arm thats a lot bigger than their other... but do these people like, not even weight train the other arm?

From this angle Nadal looks jacked

And then you see him straight on... and it looks like he's standing in front of a fun house mirror. Look at the shoulders and biceps differences... I mean, wow.

Anyone a bigger tennis fan/player than I and understand why there is THIS much disparity between his arms? I realize that the one gets bigger playing tennis... but THIS much? And he doesnt lift to try to keep himself more symmetrically strong? (I realize that what he's doing is working... but it just looks weird)

And for comedy's sake... more weird looking Tennis players' arms:

and possibly the best one yet...

Have you ever seen a blacksmith? The arm they swing the hammer with is build like an oak tree. The arm they do the precise work is an order of magnitude smaller.

What is the point of lifting weights to work out the off arm? Just looks? A strong off arm isn't needed, so why do it?

I would think that the asymmetry would be a negative in some ways... the same way that if you work out your biceps you should work out your triceps.

I could be totally off, it's working for these people... I just think it looks crazy

Two of the four people you posted pictures of have won titles at Wimbledon. I would say they are doing just fine how they are.

I think most of those shots are from bad angles, but I'm not surprised that there's a difference. These people probably practice tennis for hours every day. When you're playing 5+ hours a day, one arm is going to be bigger than the other, because you're not lifting weights for anywhere near that long.

...at least the manly one, are most likely on something. Rumor has swirled that Nadal had a postiive test result but the ATP kept it quiet. The female tennis player below is obviously on BGH.

The interesting thing about Nadal is that he is actually a righty, but his uncle and coach forced him to start playing lefty as a kid. He does everything righty except his a tennis ball. Watch him throw his wristbands into the stand--the throws them with his right arm. I think he's pretty ripped on both sides.

I played tennis in college and am currently a college tennis coach. My dominant arm is much stronger than the other, which makes sense I think. I think that's true for most tennis players.

I'm pretty sure tennis players weight train both arms - the pics may be a bit deceiving. Any 5.0+ players out there looking to hit in la or dc? I spend time in both.
