OT: Scott Shafer likely to become Syracuse head coach

Heard this as well through a contact of mine earlier.

http://www.syracuse.com/orangefootball/index.ssf/2013/01/scott_shafer_to...

Syracuse University is likely to promote defensive coordinator Scott Shafer as head football coach to replace Doug Marrone, according to one recruit who has signed to play for the Orange.

Darius Kelly, a defensive back from Tucson, Ariz., said today he was told by Syracuse assistant coach Donnie Henderson during a Monday phone call that Shafer is being promoted to take over for Marrone, who resigned to become head football coach of the NFL’s Buffalo Bills.

“He basically told me Shafer is going to be the coach for now,” Kelly said. “They plan on announcing that Sunday.”

What is it with Syracuse and hiring bad DCs as their HC?  They should promote Wheatley.

Firing him may have been a good move from the standpoint that he apparently clashed, personality-wise, with the other assistants, but I don't think it was a good move from a football standpoint.  Shafer's done well before and after his time at Michigan.  Meanwhile our 2008 defense went into the toilet after he was undermined in midseason and only got worse after he left.

I don't think he learned from his mistakes.

Arizona ranked #118 in total defense this year and #117 against the pass.

Shafer's a good coach.  It's a shame it didn't work out at Michigan.

The real question is where does this land Tyrone Wheatley?  Fred Jackson's going to be retiring soon in all likelihood, and Wheatley has to be first in line.  A few years of NFL experience with Marronne might not be such a bad thing for him.

The 2008 team couldn't have moved the ball against an IM flag-football team.  So of COURSE the problem must have been the DEFENSE.  Scapegoating Shafer because he refused to run the idiotic 3-3-5 sieve defense the Rodriguez was for some reason in love with was just ridiculous.  If you remember, before coming to Michigan, Shafer was the defensive coordinator for some guy named Jim Harbaugh.  I wonder what Harbaugh is up to these days?  Does he make good personnel decisions?

Rodriguez at Michigan might have been a lost cause.  But maybe, just MAYBE, if he had left Shafer alone and let him actually try to build a defense he might still be here today.  I personally think not trusting Shafer to run his defense was the biggest mistake he made at Michigan (outside of refusing to take the time to get involved and fix the defense and special teams himself).

that RR's biggest mistake was to not trust Shafer with the defense.  Unfortunately, though, the politics within RR's staff back in '08 allegedly were such that RR's assistants that came from WVa were favored by RR over the outsider Shafer.  Shafer likely was doomed from the start in any disagreement within Schembechler Hall.

Speaking of "Hall", Jamie---good to see you here on MGoBlog.  Good to see a long-lost former WX poster re-surface; I hope all is well with you.  Yes, I'm the same "rob f" from the WX and the old Freep Forums...
