OT: Rumor: Mack Brown to Retire on Saturday

Submitted by icefins26 on

@JakeLebahn: According to a source Texas Longhorn head coach Mack Brown will retire this Saturday after the game against Baylor.

Crazy offseason for coaches if true.  Also, Mike Sherman at A&M may be on on his way out at College Station.

I wonder what the probability that Kevin Sumlin is a candidate for one or both of those positions is.  I wouldn't mind facing a team who just lost its head coach.

I think that is interesting about Petersen talking to UNC. I was listening to SVP earlier today and he mentioned it was the best major program job vacancy out there right now. I don't really get that. SVP mentioned it was because of the great recruiting area and low expectations (given it is a basketball school). UNC hasn't really had a nationally relevant football program for quite some time. Seems to me that what Petersen did at Boise would warrant bigger and better than UNC.

I think he's had his offers, just has turned them down.  I can think of two possibilities on why this year would be different.  He feels he has a top-5 team and isn't going to a BCS bowl because of one loss and a small fan base, the tired of banging one's head against a brick wall theory.  Or, he was waiting for this one team that may have had a legitimate chance at a national title.  He's a coaching legend now and forever if he had won a national title at Boise State.

I have always been surprised that he hasn't left already. To make Boise State a nationally relevant program. If someone would have told me 15 years ago that a coach would come along and make Boise State a Top Ten team year-in-year-out, I would have thought they could have whatever coaching job they would want in the country.

I hadn't heard that.  This makes the UNC interest much more understandable.  UNC and Duke Medical complexes are two of the best in the country.  Duke, in particular, has an outstanding cancer center and its just a few miles from UNC's campus.

There are rumors that UCLA has offered or is close to offering Peterson.

According to this article:

Petersen's son actually was diagnosed with cancer when he was a one-year old, but has received treatment. There have been reports that the Boise doctor that treated Petersen's son has moved on to UCLA.

And then Urban Meyer could head back to Florida.  He said himself that Florida was his dream job.  It just didn't work out because of his health issues.  Ohio is left with Fickell!  Works for me!

Edit: and to be clear, I am not afraid of Urban coaching at Ohio.  I'm just saying it would be hilarious since all the Buckeyes blew off their loss to us and said everything was fine because they were going to get Urban and how he is an even better coach than Tressel and how they would dominate us for another 10 years with him.  I realize this WON'T happen, but it would be quite comical if it did.

I heard on the local Portland radio sports stations (sorry no link) that the health deal was just Meyer's way out.  They were stating that Urban read the writing on the wall and saw that all of his successful cordinators had been leaving for other schools and knew that Florida was headed for a tail spin, so he split before it totally collapsed.

Interesting if nothing more, and we will never know for sure.

Muschamp has to be pissed that he took the Florida job now.  All he had to do was wait another year.  It would be really funny if he bolted for Texas, though.  It would be John Brantley IV in reverse, but as a coach and not a player.

We could have been about 11-1 that year.  We also could have been 4-7.  Lost to ND by 7, lost to Wisconsin and Minnesota by 3, lost to Ohio (aargh) and Nebraska (pitch it to Breaston!) by 4 each.  Also beat MSU in EL by 3 in OT, beat Penn State on the pass to Manningham, and beat Iowa in OT by 3.  Watching the Alamo Bowl with the flu and a 103 degree fever seemed appropriate; that's how I felt all season.

I don't think A&M can afford to fire Sherman. They just paid a lot of money buying out Franchione. Furthermore, A&M has a top ten class coming in now. I also think firing your coach before the first season in the SEC is not very smart.
