OT - Roethlisberger on NIL: "They're coddled at a young age"

Submitted by kehnonymous on July 22nd, 2022 at 12:27 PM

In which your humble OP throws the MGoBoard the easiest alley-oop lob pass ever:

Ben on today's players: "Now, this new NIL stuff, which is unbelievable. They’re treated so special. They’re coddled at a young age because college coaches need them to win, too. I know coach [Terry] Hoeppner never coddled me [at Miami-Ohio]. Neither did [Bill] Cowher.” #Steelers

Deepening the irony of accusing others of being coddled, Findlay, Ohio-native Roethlisberger also famously pouted and wouldn't consider then recent national champion Ohio State as a college destination, all because Roethlisberger was mad that Jim Tressel refused clear the decks for him and had insisted on simultaneously recruiting Justin Zwick to the QB position.

To be fair, there is probably more to this story.

His HS coach started his son at QB and Roethlisberger didn’t play QB till his senior year. That probably is how he ended up being overlooked.

amazingly, his HS coach actually became an Ohio congressman.  Which is classic depending on how you evaluate decision making.

I blame the Rooneys too.  They didn't have to keep him around.  I truly believe in second chances,  but they should have un-assed him and let him find redemption playing for the Raiders.

But no, franchise QBs are too hard to find.

I grew up a Steelers fan. They lost me as a fan when they didn't fire Roethlisberger.  I don't care that he retired, the Rooneys are still there.

I love having Sunday afternoons in the fall free to get stuff done instead of screaming at the television.  I do enough of that on Saturdays in the fall.

I didn't know much of the rape allegations. The bathroom story looks really damning. The article said the victim went straight to the police. Without being gross, how was there not evidence to convict?

Considering the special treatment he got for his little predicament, I'm not sure his opinion on degrading others for getting special treatment amounts to anything.

Had he not been a Super Bowl winning star QB, if he was just a regular Joe Schmo like the rest of us, he would've been in jail.

Partially right message; one of the worst possible messengers. Until he takes full, public accountability for his own transgressions, and the people he hurt, physically and emotionally, I have no desire to consider his opinions.

Jim on today's players: "Now, this new NIL stuff, which is unbelievable. They’re treated so special. They’re coddled at a young age because college coaches need them to win, too. I know coach [Bo] Schembechler  never coddled me [at Michigan]. Neither did [Mike] Ditka.”

Could easily be Harbaugh's words if he wasn't coaching in college.

This dude used to catcall my good friend who lived in the same neighborhood back in the day.

She would jog along the roads in the neighborhood, and he would say stuff as he would drive by or when she went by his house on her run.

She was also...very not legal.

I just laughed at this whole thing. I guarantee Ben was coddled in college. You don’t get the ego he got without being coddled

This is no different than the guy who claims his hard he worked to get to where he is then come to find out Daddy gave him everything to succeed.

Dunno. He was in my dorm and I knew him socially. I never saw anything granted to him that wasn't also available to any other athlete at the school - being a QB at The Miami University does not impart the sort of advantages it does in Ann Arbor or the other Miami.

He was a star QB at a MAC school enjoying historical success and does not think he was coddled? Stunning lack of awareness

He’s the kind of guy who doesn’t wear a helmet on his motorcycle and then is surprised when he crashes and is mangled
