Texas kind of does have two QBs don't they?  Supposedly was an close competition and most think the backup played pretty well in Ewers place, even if neither of them could get in the end zone.

You are going to continue to see the "Cade McNamara going to grad transfer" all year long on the ND blogs as their impending, woeful 4-8 campaign this year continues.

Hope it is evident to CJ Carr - this is a dumpster fire you can avoid.  And to hell with Notre Dame!

Buchner's injury may actually have the opposite effect. He was a true sophomore this season, so without this injury, the starting QB spot would have been wide open after the 2023 season (if Buchner blew up and left early) or the 2024 season (if he didn't). That means CJ Carr would have had to sit behind Buchner for at most one year.

Now Buchner is going to redshirt this year, which changes the timeline. Because Buchner is a smallish QB (6'2", 205 lbs) and is coming off a serious injury, it's unlikely he will leave for the NFL after only one year as a starting QB, which means that Carr would probably have to sit at least two years at ND before having a shot at the starting job.

Exactly why you need 2 QBs.  The people saying Cade should leave immediately are the same people that will call for Harbaugh's firing if JJ gets injured and we have to rely on Warren...

And the classless fans booing Cade was horrendous. Imagine a UM QB beating OSU and the inning the BIG 10 in years getting booed at home during a blow out win.

Totally agree. The potential for injury is why it makes total sense for Michigan to want to have Cade, it does not dramatically change whether it makes sense from Cade's perspective to stay at Michigan.

As much as I love Cade and really want him to stay, I would totally understand leaving, and I think I'd probably do the same if I were in his shoes. No matter what he decides, he is a great Wolverine who led us to a Big Ten Championship, a win over Ohio State, and a trip to the playoffs.

I think the only reason Cade would leave this season is to get onto his next team early and start learning the playbook et cetera. I would not hold that against him but it would certainly put us in a precarious situation moving forward.

Those saying Warren is better than Cade or ready to be our 2nd string should slow their roll.

of course every team wants to retain 2 playable QBs - unfortunately its not so easy in modern transfer portal ball.  its more difficult at QB but its tough to remain stacked at every position.  which is why every single scholarship matters as teams need to reload young talent to offset those more experienced transfers

Saw both injuries as they happened and the Ewers one looked worse yet he is only on the shelf for 4-6 weeks. Just goes to show you never know how these things will shake out. Its clear Buchner is not the answer and he won the QB battle in camp...ND is in the shit now and I am here for it!

Card looked solid and was the named starter last season so he obviously has some talent. I know Ewers had a good game going against Bama when he went out but I am not convinced he was/is so much better than Card at this point in his career. Texas will be as fine as they would have been otherwise. I am not sure that is particularly fine because Bama looked incredibly average in that game. They looked poorly coached and low on talent, which was the real shocker of the weekend. I know Saban will coach them up but they have a long way to go a this point in the season.

The QB on that roster that intrigues me is Maalik Murphy. Michigan wanted him badly and there is no way he will stick around once Manning comes to town. Not saying he is coming to Michigan but he will move on and will likely be a guy to watch down the road.

Yikes! He hasn't been great, but his backup looked worse.

Yes, you always have to expect that you'll need two QBs to get through the season.

Harbaugh better handle Cade quite delicately right now...Cade needs to keep his head straight to avoid mentally checking out. Harbaugh should make a clear announcement that JJ is the starter past UConn; the longer Cade is in this 1A/1B situation it will continue to rattle his psyche. Better for Cade to know his role, that he's #2 rather than 1B.

Apparently Harbaugh clarified that JJ is the starter without the "for Connecticut" caviat later in the press conference fwiw.

I agree with you on the QB2 stuff - tell Cade M will still NEED him sometime this year and he will get his chances to show his skill / worth as the season goes on.  If Cade decides he wants to Grad transfer at the end of the season these opportunities will be his "demo tape" (in addition to the 2021 season) for potential suitors so it behooves him to focus and kick ass.

Drew Pyne -- all 5'11" of him -- becomes the man now in South Bend...yikes. ND will still beat the dregs of their schedule (UNLV & Navy), but even games against Cal, Syracuse, and BC look tough now, to say nothing of matchups with UNC, BYU, Stanford, Clemson, and USC.

While true, Marshall is a pretty good G5 team, whereas Navy has completely bottomed out after their excellent 11-2 season in 2019 and UNLV has been awful for what feels like forever (last winning season: 2013).

Even with lousy QB play, ND's defense and relentless peppering of Mayer should net them wins over those teams. I make no such proclamation about their other seven games, though.

I dislike ND as much as anyone else (I'm not Catholic, either, so no sense of pseudo-affliation with that), and Rudy can go fuck himself.  But I don't want to see any player knocked out of a season for injury.  I feel bad for the kid and hope he has a good, and quick, recovery so he can get back on the field doing what he's wanted to do all his life - play football.

Aside from that, to Hell with Noter Dame.

That just sucks for him. Hate to see that as I really want to see Notre Dame struggle with all of their starters healthy so it can't use injury as an excuse as Michigan poaches the recruits where Michigan came in 2nd.

Are there any 2023 guys we came second on? I know everyone is talking about Carr for the 2024 class, but I think we are in a great position with Davis who I think is better than Carr. Unless some thing drastic happens with ND, I see them losing to BYU, Clemson, and USC for sure. UNC and Stanford seem like tossups at this point and Navy+BC as the only wins I'd bet on. I could hilariously see them at 2-8 going into the Clemson game and finishing with 4 wins.
