OT: ND's Cierre Wood and Justin Utupo suspended for two games
http://irish.nbcsports.com/2012/08/26/cierre-wood-suspended-for-season-…
I saw some rumors about this last night, but it looked like it might be just rumor. Apparently not. The article doesn't say it, but the rumor is it's for testing positive to marijuana.
Edit: Updated the title based on Kelly's statement.

My sources are telling me Notre Dame RB Cierre Wood will be suspended for a significant amount of time (3+ games) to start the season.
August 26th, 2012 at 1:59 PM ^
... since he might miss the Michigan game.

You mean like Hoke and Fitz?
August 26th, 2012 at 5:28 PM ^
More like Kelly and Floyd.
August 26th, 2012 at 1:59 PM ^
I'm kind of hoping it's four games...

I for one would love to see the purdue woop the irish. purdue has had some shitty luck the last couple years with all the acl injuries it be nice for them to win this one. plus to hell with Notre Dame

Hope is a bigger douchenozzle than Kelly. His treatment of Rodriguez still irks me.

Yeah, I don't get that either. Maybe Kelly likes to booze cruze a little himself, so he can justify it, but also lost a family member to a high couch-sitter, so that one hits close to home.
August 26th, 2012 at 3:14 PM ^
It's because they're the "fighting Irish." I'm Irish, and I don't consider it drinking unless it's at least 80 proof.
Marijuana, on the other hand, is a drug for drug users who aren't like Irish people.
August 26th, 2012 at 9:46 PM ^
I'm Irish by heritage

high couch sitters are dangerous do not trivialize it please. when is society going to realize the danger presented by high couch sitters and establish a war on drugs so we can spend enough money to eradicate them?

Who got caught driving multiple teams under the influence?
August 26th, 2012 at 4:54 PM ^
there is a huge difference.. floyd got a DUI in the spring term.
wood failed a drug test a few weeks before the season opener.

no, it means that when someone commits a crime a week before the season begins, or while the season is occuring, the obvious punishment is to have them sit out of games
when someone commits a crime 5 months before the season starts there are a lot of ways to be punished - im not saying floyd shouldnt have been punished, but its obvious that cierre would miss games in this case [i said cierre instead of wood because it would have been wood would lol]
you guys do realize that toussaint may not even sit out a game right? get off your high horse already because this happens at every school

the ridiculous drug laws in the country and the attitude of many. DUI =/= smoking a little refer.

#NotreDame HC Brian Kelly: "Justin (Utupo) and Cierre (Wood) violated our team rules so I’ve suspended them for the first two games."
August 26th, 2012 at 2:50 PM ^
New QB, best pass rusher gone, two CB injured and now this. Even if they are back, this cannot help their cause.
August 26th, 2012 at 2:56 PM ^
If I remember correctly, ND recruited him as a DE but I don't think he's quite broken onto the depth chart there yet, at least not meaningfully. In the few games I did see involving the Irish last year, I think Utupo was on special teams mainly. That might not sting as bad as not having Cierre Wood, but still, it is starting to look like it could be a rough season if the injuries and suspensions pile up.
As for Wood, I think Golson handing it to Riddick on rushing plays probably still works against Navy, but this makes their game against Purdue look a little more intriguing.
August 26th, 2012 at 7:31 PM ^
You are correct. Utupo isn't a factor. He's a special teams player. Wood is a huge loss. This leaves the depth at Theo Riddick, George Atkinson, II, and then a freshman (Will Mahone).

Since when does Brian Kelly actually suspend players? Has all that negative press he's gotten this past year woken him up?
August 26th, 2012 at 2:50 PM ^
since their first games were navy and purdue
August 26th, 2012 at 4:10 PM ^
Good point. I knew something wasn't adding up.

If he isn't in South Bend when UM rolls around, I'll scream so loudly I'll look like, well...
August 26th, 2012 at 3:47 PM ^
Kelly is in deep shit this season. A loss to Navy or Purdue could leave them 1-3 after Michigan with Oklahoma, Stanford, Miami, and USC left on the schedule.
It's a never-ending story for Notre Dame, but they could be better than last year and still be looking for a new coach in December.
August 26th, 2012 at 5:31 PM ^
This is a pivotal year, but he's been recruiting well enough that hopefully ND fans can see a light at the end of the tunnel and forgive him for this year and let him coach a 4th season. I want him to stay in South Bend. I like beating him.
August 26th, 2012 at 5:45 PM ^
August 26th, 2012 at 6:04 PM ^
Haha. Yeah, but our coaches are better, and will be recruiting even better (hard to imagine because they're already dominating) so I don't want ND to be too bad. Their fans need to keep getting their hopes up before we crush them every year. I definitely don't want the rivalry to turn into this...
August 26th, 2012 at 6:38 PM ^
I guess I'm in the opposite camp. I would prefer to not play Notre Dame every year in favor of playing a team from outside the Midwest each year, like Ohio State does each season. A home and home with Texas would rock, but I also want three tuneup wins each year before the conference schedule starts.
August 26th, 2012 at 6:51 PM ^
I'd love to wail on the perennially overrated. Schedule a home and home against FSU, still a warmup win.
August 27th, 2012 at 9:28 AM ^
I wouldn't be too sure about that. I am an avid FSU hater, but they are very strong on defense and have a real QB at the helm. They aren't pushovers. With all that said, I hope they manage to lose 3 games with that WEAK schedule of theirs.
