OT MSU cancels classes tomorrow
MSU has canceled classes for tomorrow due to snowpocalypse which should be beginning soon. As a student of UofM with a 9AM class tomorrow I am all for classes being canceled here too. Please snow gods don't fail me now I'm not doing my homework just to ensure it.

Don't fret. If concerned, have your buddy Johnny Walker sleep over
February 1st, 2011 at 5:36 PM ^
Sparty is like a Turkey that can actually drown looking up to see the snow fall.
February 1st, 2011 at 5:38 PM ^
Actually, Michigan never ever cancels classes due to a law suit in the past.
Thats not to say people will be going to class.
February 1st, 2011 at 5:41 PM ^
but I was never sure if it's actually true. They have to have snow day for the sake of faculty and staff having to drive to Michigan campus.
February 1st, 2011 at 6:39 PM ^
If they don't cancel school across the board tomorrow it'll be ME who has to drive to class, because there's a large quiz tomorrow and Bacon isn't letting any of us out of it unless he has to.
February 1st, 2011 at 5:45 PM ^
the Michigan daily has done an article about it and there is no record of it ever having happened
February 1st, 2011 at 5:46 PM ^
That is a myth that someone filed a law suit in the past and won. That rumor is at almost all big schools. If the school deems it is in the best interest and safety of the students, faculty, etc. they will cancel.
February 1st, 2011 at 5:50 PM ^
there will be school tomorrow. Never ever had snow day in my 4 years at Michigan even with a big winterstorm. To think of it, I never had a snow day in high school.
It wasn't until I go to Xavier this year and already had 2 snow days in 2 weeks in Janurary. I'm positive and hoping that there will be snow day tomorrow.
February 1st, 2011 at 6:18 PM ^
Wow. Did you grow up in the south?
February 1st, 2011 at 9:24 PM ^
I'm from Michigan and grew up on the west side. Surprising? Yes. I never get snow day even with a foot of snow. wtf I remember seeing every school on the west side plus the entire state of Michigan have snow day and we're one of the few who still has school.
February 1st, 2011 at 7:51 PM ^
I'm also at Xavier. They generally cancel class with the first hint of accumulating snow. I sure hope classes get canceled, but I'm not optimistic with all this rain. Could really use another week to study for this Managerial Finance exam...
February 1st, 2011 at 11:14 PM ^
looks like it'll be just rain tomorrow. Weather god is hating me right now. Maybe the road will be too icy to have class? That's what I'm hoping for.
February 2nd, 2011 at 2:47 AM ^
I think they said on WTKA in the morning that the last snow day Michigan had was in the 1970s, which is just astonishing.
February 1st, 2011 at 11:32 PM ^
I'm still waiting for toledo to cancel class or else im fucked.. 35 miles to get to a damn accounting exam. I might as well get my dogs and sled ready for this one.
February 1st, 2011 at 5:33 PM ^
Purdue, please give us a day off as well... I don't want my ass sliding to campus for my 7:30....
February 1st, 2011 at 5:47 PM ^
You were cancelled today, I'm sure you will be tomorrow.
If I remember correctly, this is the first time Purdue has cancelle since the President got pissed that all of the students showed up and went sledding on the hill in front of his house.
I can remember going when the busses couldn't make it up Chauncey Hill because of ice.

... some poor kid isn't going to be able to take their finger painting classes.
February 1st, 2011 at 5:37 PM ^
THANK YOU VERY MUCH, MISS LIPPY!!!
February 1st, 2011 at 5:35 PM ^
Michigan doesn't cancel classes for nothin. There are actual academic standards compared to Little Brother who wanted the day off to just get wasted tonight.
February 1st, 2011 at 5:37 PM ^
Wayne State cancelled tonight and tomorrow's classes as well. May not be comparable to UofM because WSU has many more commuters than A2 campus.
February 1st, 2011 at 5:36 PM ^
Whatever. The students wouldn't have been at class anyway.
February 1st, 2011 at 5:37 PM ^
MSU taught all their classes online - at least the 90% of the curriculum that is pictorial.

Of course he had a great career.

MSU has classes, I was under the impression that they were just formalities there
February 1st, 2011 at 6:08 PM ^
I was told today that Michigan never cancels classes collectively because if they shut down the school they'd have to shut down the hospital as well since it's part of the same organization, and that professors are given the authority to cancel their own class if they deem it necessary. Since the hospital can't be shut down, the University must stay open.
Not sure if it's true or not, but that's what I heard.
February 1st, 2011 at 8:05 PM ^
The rumor when I was a student (late '90s) was that some ass sued the school for cancelling class, and as a result they will never cancel. This was a prettty widespread rumor back then, and it seemed to be borne out by the facts (i.e. they never ever cancel class). I am a little surprised I have not seen mention of it yet on this thread.
February 1st, 2011 at 8:16 PM ^
That legend was debunked earlier in the thread.
I believe I did have a professor cancel class once (c. 2000). I think it's basically left up to the faculty to decide what they want to do.
February 1st, 2011 at 8:21 PM ^
It's mentioned up above now, but it's false. The Daily did an article on it in the past and there was no record of it. I haven't heard the hospital one, though. What I've heard is that they'll cancel if the power's out, but I haven't heard any other scenarios. Maybe the administration hires someone to go around and spread lies to the students so they don't expect snow days.

My professor for my 10 o'clock class pretty much said that she might not make it because she lives in Toledo. I imagine most of my professors living in Ann Arbor or the Ann Arbor area. Don't know though, i haven't watched the weather and people are making it out to be the end of the world (See Woj).
My friends are all more concerned whether Skeeps will be open tonight.
February 1st, 2011 at 6:11 PM ^
Well good thing the football students can still get there work done with MSU's online courses they are taking.... from their jail cell.
To soon?

If you're going to take academic shots, at least make sure your post doesn't have grammatical errors. Credibility Failure.
February 1st, 2011 at 6:12 PM ^
say. Classes were not canceled. I did walk around campus and take a lot of awesome photos of people sliding all over the place, or getting pummeled by snow shooting out of a power broom which was pretty cool. And I also went to class.

Some poor guy parked on Elm got a giant, ice-coated tree branch through his rear window. We had a good laugh and then tried to drive to Bennys.
February 1st, 2011 at 6:13 PM ^
At this rate, we'll have class just to be "the leaders and best" or some shit while every other school enjoys their day off.
At least I'm not getting cheated out of my $25k a year or whatever.
February 1st, 2011 at 6:24 PM ^
"The last time U-M closed was 1978". That explains why the only time I've heard of a snow day was from a 70s alumna.
February 1st, 2011 at 7:03 PM ^
was my husband's freshman year. He was just telling me the story of that day. He lived on a floor with a bunch of the football players (he was an Honors student) and they spent the whole day outside in the snow playing football. He said that the Florida players were having the most fun.
February 1st, 2011 at 6:18 PM ^
They never cancelled due to weather in my 4 years there. We had a bad ice storm one year and they were nice enough to warn students to watch out for all the falling tree branches.
February 1st, 2011 at 6:28 PM ^
Is closed tomorrow also.
February 1st, 2011 at 6:29 PM ^
You would think driving a big metal box full of spooning students in 25+mph winds and a foot of snow would be a bit of a liability...

it should be a national holiday.

Exam tomorrow. Still on.
Angry Snow Day Hating Michigan God, please feel better.

I second that emotion..Signing Day could have it's own little winter-esque holiday.
