OT - Movie you HATE, from an actor/director you like?
January 25th, 2022 at 9:02 AM ^
Anchor Man 2. So many actors I love, especially when you consider all the cameos, but it was embarrassingly bad.
January 25th, 2022 at 1:41 PM ^
I don't really get all the hate for Anchorman 2. I thought it was hilarious!
January 25th, 2022 at 2:58 PM ^
The brawl in the park scene was killer...I had to rewatch it 3 times.
January 26th, 2022 at 8:49 AM ^
Anchorman 2 was better than the first one. There was a depth to its satire the first didn't attempt.

Dunkirk. I love Nolan but I just do not enjoy the film. Nolan is at his best for me when he shuffles the timeline and writes big speculative pieces. He tries to bring his style to a war film but its a bad fit for me
January 25th, 2022 at 9:19 AM ^
Huh. I really liked Dunkirk. But hey -- to each his or her own, which is kinda the point of this thread.
Now, Tenet, on the other hand, well...
January 25th, 2022 at 9:21 AM ^
Really? I thought Tenet was dope...it's turned into one of those movies I watch every time it's on.
January 25th, 2022 at 9:24 AM ^
Didn't hate it, but certainly didn't love it.
January 25th, 2022 at 10:42 AM ^
Interesting choice - I enjoy Dunkirk, though I was disappointed with it at first because I was hoping for more of a grand war movie that covered the on-going tactical situation.
January 25th, 2022 at 7:07 PM ^
Whaaat? Dunkirk is a great film.
January 25th, 2022 at 9:06 AM ^
I don't watch many movies, but the Coen brothers have produced some of the most engaging and entertaining movies I've ever seen.
Except for "The Big Lebowski." I didn't hate it, but it didn't hold my interest, I didn't like the character Bridges played, and never finished watching it. Some day I'll give it another try.
January 25th, 2022 at 9:10 AM ^
That's a bummer, man...a bummer.
January 25th, 2022 at 9:26 AM ^
That's over the line.
January 25th, 2022 at 2:16 PM ^
Goodman becomes grating after 250 watches.
January 25th, 2022 at 9:11 AM ^
Yeah, well, that's just like, your opinion, man.
January 25th, 2022 at 9:11 AM ^
With you on this one. Every single character looked like they smelled bad and I couldn’t relate. I see why it’s a classic, but I just didn’t love it.
January 25th, 2022 at 10:06 AM ^
The weird thing is that I've loved Bridges, Turturro, Goodman, and Buscemi in virtually everything else I've seen them in, whether in a Coen film or not.
January 25th, 2022 at 10:27 AM ^
Same. Amazing actors, just not my scene, I guess.
January 25th, 2022 at 9:12 AM ^
On this board, those might be fighting words. Brian (and probably Seth) has repeatedly canonized "The Big Lebowski".
January 26th, 2022 at 5:24 PM ^
Brian thinks Happy Gilmore has no jokes and is not funny. His movie opinion hold no weight for me. But big Lebowski is a fun flick.
January 25th, 2022 at 9:12 AM ^
This opinion won't sit well with the MGoBlogeratti
January 25th, 2022 at 9:13 AM ^
We cant be friends.
January 25th, 2022 at 9:17 AM ^
I'm not alone.
January 25th, 2022 at 9:25 AM ^
Obviously you aren't a golfer
January 25th, 2022 at 10:13 AM ^
That is true. But the fact I've golfed exactly once in my life (for a good friend's bachelor party) didn't keep me from enjoying the hell out of Caddyshack, Tin Cup, or Happy Gilmore.
January 25th, 2022 at 9:26 AM ^
You're out of your element, Don(ny)!!!
January 25th, 2022 at 9:34 AM ^
I watched about 30 min of it once, 15 years ago and fell asleep. That's the movie he says dude all the time right?
Also have never seen Caddyshack, although I've never tried to watch it. I hear it's not bad.
January 25th, 2022 at 9:39 AM ^
HFS you've never seen Caddyshack? Take some shrooms and watch it. Now! Go!
January 25th, 2022 at 10:09 AM ^
Same - never got into the Big Lebowski and fell asleep .. and this was long before "Daddy always falls asleep as soon as we start a movie" was a thing.
Caddyshack isnt my favorite. So many other 80s classics i prefer.
We are kindred sleeping spirits
January 25th, 2022 at 10:45 AM ^
I felt the same way about Barton Fink. It just didn't work for me.
January 25th, 2022 at 11:02 AM ^
SHUT THE FUCK UP, DONNY!!!
January 25th, 2022 at 11:45 AM ^
I think it's one of the funniest movies ever made. My ex-fiance said it was "a guy film," and I get that, but it just cracks me up. Absolutely love it
January 25th, 2022 at 12:06 PM ^
I watched it when it came out and thought it was dumb. Then I watched it in college and enjoyed it more. Probably have seen it 10-20 times since and times 2-15 it got better every time watching how things tie together more and more. I still enjoy it though. Won't tell you what to do, but you may give it another change.
January 25th, 2022 at 12:13 PM ^
This post really ties the whole thread together.
January 25th, 2022 at 2:19 PM ^
What I found odd about the movie is that its center (arguably, the dialogue between the Goodman and Bridges characters) is the most sub-standard part. There are lots of other things (plot, bits and pieces of surrealism, etc.) to like.
January 25th, 2022 at 3:10 PM ^
That's marvelous.
January 25th, 2022 at 5:24 PM ^
My Coen Brothers' clunker...well, aside from their first film (not Blood Simple--that's a classic)...is Hudsucker Proxy. It looks great but is terrible other than that. I'm also a big fan of Tim Robbins, so this is a two-fer.
January 25th, 2022 at 7:28 PM ^
I hated Big Lebowski the first I saw it. This was when I was around 17 years old and innocent as babe. I saw it again after five years and copious amounts of ganja - loved it!
January 25th, 2022 at 9:12 AM ^
The Greatest Showman. I like Hugh Jackman and I like musicals, but this movie is one of the worst "big hits" I've ever seen. The character development is a mess, the story is all over the place, and worst of all, the music sounds like a bunch of late Fall Out Boy or Imagine Dragon songs that didn't make the album.
January 25th, 2022 at 9:59 AM ^
To each their own, but I read this like:
January 25th, 2022 at 11:26 AM ^
Pasek and Paul, who wrote the music to The Greatest Showman, among other recent Broadway and Hollywood musical hits, are both Michigan alumni. I can't hate on them for that reason alone.
Anyway, I have to disagree on TGS. I see where you are coming from, but to me it's exactly what I would expect from a modern musical with 19th Century subjects, made to be a Disney hit. It's a live action version of the fairy tales, basically. I enjoyed it for what it is and didn't expect anything more.
Hugh Jackman in Les Mis though - one of the worst of many issues with that movie.
January 25th, 2022 at 2:19 PM ^
Looking at reviews and talking to people I know, I'm definitely in the minority when it comes to TGS. I was expecting something with more depth, musically and in the storytelling, but that doesn't appear to have been the goal of the filmmakers.
The Les Mis movie has a lot of glaring issues, but I'd choose it over TGS any day. It would have been much better if they hired legit Broadway talent, especially considering they recorded the music live, but the acting was solid and the story is a classic. I wish more musicals recorded live vocals with the scene even though I understand the logistics are a nightmare. With this approach, you can see and hear the emotion really connect vs. the typical overproduced soundtrack layered on top of the lipsyncing actor.

I'm gonna opt for The Counselor (2013).
What a terrific cast, including some of my favorites in Michael Fassbender, and Javier Bardem, with a screenplay written by one of my favorite authors, too, in Cormac McCarthy.
I've never seen a more self-indulgent piece of shit in my life. Cameron Diaz basically has sex with a car in this film. And you might be thinking to yourself, "well, hey now"... but no. Just...no.
Cormac, I love ya, man...but stick to novels.
January 25th, 2022 at 9:20 AM ^
Haha, Great minds think alike lol.
January 25th, 2022 at 9:35 AM ^
That movie was such a disappointment. I think had Fassbender been in the right movie at that time, his star would've gotten much brighter.
January 25th, 2022 at 9:19 AM ^
Big fan of Ridley Scott movies, but he made "The Counselor" in 2013 and it was one of the worst films I've ever seen in my life. I was literally pissed off at the end of that movie it was so bad.
January 25th, 2022 at 9:21 AM ^
My brother and I saw this film in a theater where we were the only two people in it. So, we did use that opportunity to "MST3K" our way through it, which at least made for a semi-entertaining couple of hours.
But, yeah. Just absolute dreck.
January 25th, 2022 at 9:23 AM ^
HAHA, at least you got to have some fun with it's awfulness!
January 25th, 2022 at 9:19 AM ^
The Grifters. I love other John Cusack movies, but this is among the 5 worst movies I've ever seen.
