OT: Mike Leach hospitalized with non-trivial condition

Submitted by mgeoffriau on December 11th, 2022 at 9:13 PM

OT, but I think a number of us are fans of Mike Leach and his influence on CFB.

From [Miss State] beat writers - "I am told that Coach was successfully Air Lifted to Jackson on an Airbus Helicopter H145. There was a delay in getting airborne due to some weather, but they were able to find a window and got him down there safely.

From what I am told, the next few hours are critical. Coach has a long road ahead of him. The situation is very, very serious. If you are the praying type, Coach Leach, his family and the attending physicians could use your prayers. If you are not the praying type, then perhaps you can make an exception in these circumstances."

Speaking personally, I met Mike many years ago after his book Swing Your Sword was published. I was working in an indy bookstore at the time and Mike came through for a book signing. He was great with customers/fans, very approachable, kind, and funny. He was a bit more...open...with the staff. Extremely funny and smart dude.

And yes, I witnessed him inscribing more than a few books with "CJK5H" .

sounds very serious, like stroke type of serious.  from the ESPN article:

"Leach, in his third season as Mississippi State's coach, told ESPN after the regular season concluded that he struggled with pneumonia during the season but that he was feeling better."

Did not have a comfortable feeling after reading initial reports.

Mike Leach is an “outside of the box” kind of coach who is brilliant. His teams quickly improve and remain competitive.  Many of his interviews are legendary. He adds interest and fun to college football.

May the heavens guide his physicians and nurses as they work to stabilize his condition, while also providing optimism and comfort to his family.

Fuck, we already lost Calvin Magee this year...losing two great contributing coaches to this sport in a year would just really suck (edit, three coaches -- I forgot Greg Robinson :( )

Pull through, Coach Leach. ❤️

Sports aside, I believe he’s a father, and with Christmas approaching I feel terrible for his family! Praying he pulls through and thinking of the Doctors, nurses and support staff!

Amen on feeling terrible for his family - my own father died on the same day (December 11th), several years ago.

I pray his family does not have to go through the same and send prayers to all who are connected with Mike Leach.

We only get so many trips around the sun.  Cherish each that you and your loved ones get.

I wonder if that RB who took some pretty strong shots at Leach last week on his way to the portal feels a little bad now.

I have loved watching Leach’s teams. He has turned random Midwest undersized, and not incredibly strong-armed kids into NCAA record holders. Turned Tex Tech and Washington St into competitive programs; two programs who doormats prior to his arrival. And of course, his interviews have been a national treasure. Praying for a full recovery

Don't know what to make of this, but people close to him are talking pretty seriously:
