a 16 seed eventually has to beat a 1 seed right? THIS IS THE YEAR!
February 19th, 2013 at 11:20 PM ^
Don't say that when Michigan has a good chance to be one.

Who even cares if we get a 1 seed at this point. The top 10 at least are all pretty even and anyone can be beaten on a neutral court, moreso this year than ever. A 2 or even a 3 seed is more than sufficient. It's all about matchups, which pretty much comes down to luck.
February 19th, 2013 at 11:30 PM ^
How easy it all seemed before the conference season?
Not only can anyone be beaten on a neutral court, but I can't wait to get back to some of the teams that conferences besides the B1G think are good.

when we weren't even guaranteed a bid to the NCAA tournament??? Now we are talking top three seed? Times have changed! And for the better. Except for the poor East Lansing couches....
February 20th, 2013 at 12:01 AM ^
Yes, it's all about matchups, but when you're a #1 seed, you're more likely to get favorable matchups than you are anywhere else. Over the years, #1 seeds have significantly more likely to make the Final Four than #2 seeds, and much more likely than #3 seeds.

If they lose that game, then goodbye #1 seed. They're not winning the ACC tournament.
February 20th, 2013 at 1:58 AM ^
With wins against NC State, Duke and lil bro. Yeah they suck.

If nothing else, they're a Wisconsin-level PITA to play against (which makes sense given Bennet's background).
February 20th, 2013 at 12:22 PM ^
Maybe they or Gonzaga can be the first 1-seed(s) to lose to a 16. They both keep improving their record by barely beating sub-par competition. Both are good, but I don't think either is top 5 or maybe top 10 outfit

It's definitely doable.
February 19th, 2013 at 11:40 PM ^
But, I wasn't impressed with miami or florida tonight.
February 19th, 2013 at 11:48 PM ^
Florida has played three close games this year and they've lost every one of them. This is the second time this year they've collapsed down the stretch and blown big leads to lose. They're very suspect.
February 19th, 2013 at 11:49 PM ^
with Florida considering its on the road against a solid Missouri team. Their number one concern at this point should be depth considering they only went two or three deep off the bench tonight... Miami on the other hand is highly overrated considering how they have handled mediocre competition in the ACC (Other than Duke).
February 19th, 2013 at 11:40 PM ^
Indiana (MW), Duke(E), Miami(S), Gonzaga(W)
Nothing major. Just his latest "if the season ended at 11:40PM ET" projection.

February 19th, 2013 at 11:52 PM ^
is going strictly by what has happened in the past one to three weeks... Michigan has been losing, while Duke and Miami have been winning... And Gonzaga still hasn't lost since Butler. Seems about right at this point basing it strictly off of records and past couple of games.
February 19th, 2013 at 11:54 PM ^
You look at the B1G, and you see all the top teams with 3 or 4 conference losses. You say, I can't rank these guys higher, even though the teams they lost to are also top teams with 3 or 4 conference losses. The conference sniping is a drain on the rankings.
HOWEVA, I think if we can win out the remainder of the regular season, and Indana does the same save the finale against us, the Big will end up with two 1's (M and IU), a 2 (MSU), a 5 (OSU), a 6 (Wisky), and three mixed between 7 and 10 with Illinois, Minny and Iowa.
I see no problems with 8 for the B1G this year. It's such a killer that I figure 7-9, no more than two OOC losses and a quality win or two will do it.

The 1 seed would be big for our national presence. If we win some games to finish the year and make a run in the big ten tourney, we will get one. Go Blue; excited to watch.
February 20th, 2013 at 12:10 AM ^
1 seed would be cool, but the top teams are getting the best shot game after game. I'd rather not have the opponents be able to get hyped up over playing against a number 1 seed. 2 or 3 would be just fine. 1 & 2 in the Big Ten will get #1s, I think that is pretty much a given.

February 20th, 2013 at 8:15 AM ^
Add in that there seems to be a pretty significant talent drop off after the top 12 and there's a definite advantage in being a top seed this year, and avoiding the 2-3 game (if seeds hold) in the sweet 16. Just going on Lunardi's latest, you're looking at playing 3-seeds Louisville, Arizona, Kansas or New Mexico in the Sweet 16 if you're a 2 seed, versus Okie State, K State, Marquette or G'town if you're a 1.
February 20th, 2013 at 12:10 AM ^
So with these loses so far it puts us back in the top 5 with a win on Sunday.
February 20th, 2013 at 8:23 AM ^
Jesus, during football season isn't it terrible when SEC homers emphatically vow that X top team in a lesser conference wouldn't finish in the top half of the SEC and use it as evidence that they shouldn't get a BCS bid?
Well, now that Gonzaga, who lost to a middling Illinois team at home will quite possibly get a higher seed than us, I kind of know how they feel.

Sorry for the hijack, but when has SEC EVAR played a touch OOC game? Not counting the Bama/UM game last year..
February 20th, 2013 at 9:11 AM ^
LSU 2011: Oregon @ Jerrydome, @ West Virginia
Alabama's played in other kickoff games against IIRC Clemson and Va Tech, and played a home and home against Penn State.
Florida annually against FSU; South Carolina annually against Clemson (not sure if these count).
Georgia played Boise St. (and lost)
Arkansas played recent series with USC and Texas A&M (before they joined the SEC)
Even Auburn, who's perenially been one of the culprits, had recent series against Clemson and USC.
I think the real criticism is that they mostly play OOC games against the ACC, which has perenially underachieved and which means they rarely travel outside the South.
EDIT: And if you think about it, the Big Ten is just as bad if not worse. We usually play one tough OOC game against ND and three variations on tomato can depending on how you feel about UConn. OSU plays one. PSU sometimes plays one tough OOC game, often none. Wisconsin never plays anyone OOC. Nebraska's been playing a mid-tier Pac 12 team. Looking forward, it's pretty unquestionable that the most aggressive OOC scheduler in the league is ... MSU. Annual series against ND that continues into the future and scheduled series against Oregon, Boise, and Alabama.

Miami might be a little overrated as of right now..The game as clemson was terrible and were lucky to pull that one out.. Indy is the most solid team ive seen all yr and I see them probably getting the overall #1 seed..Hope i'm wrong and Michigan kicks it into high gear. Should be a great tourney this yr..CANT WAIT

...the original reference is from a rap song and refers to the Kray brothers; a couple English criminals with bad tempers. At least that's how they were portrayed in the movie. Over time the saying has morphed into a synonym for crazy. At least that's how I've seen it used.
February 20th, 2013 at 1:14 PM ^
Exactly, it doesn't mean "crazy". I would have posted a link, but I was on the phone and it was a hassle.

If Gonzaga is a 1, I can see a 16 seed beating them. They just dont impress me that much.
February 20th, 2013 at 2:56 PM ^
You have to remember though - the #16 seeds are bad teams that happened to win their conference tournament. Most of them wouldn't have been good enough to get an NIT bid. Any halfway decent tournament team would be a big favorite against a #16 seed.
February 20th, 2013 at 11:32 AM ^
Please God eliminate Cray from the slang dictionary. Tired of hearing my 9-year old tell me something is Cray-Cray.

Im sorry Miami is not impressive it all, I don't care if they only have 3 loses. They are not that good of a team. It's in the eye test, they lost to Florida Gulf Coast, so I'm pretty sure theres a good chance they could lose to a 16 seed.
