OT: Matt Shepard Out at WDFN
The media carnage continues. Matt Shepard was fired yesterday as the morning-show guy at WDFN 1130AM. I assume he'll continue to be the voice of Michigan basketball.
It'll be interesting to see where he lands. Mike Valenti's new co-host?

A Valenti reference in the OP and a Freep link? You brave soul.
Shh. We're not allowed to talk about that. Just let the hate flow comrade.
I think it is bigger than the individuals, but Snyder is still there.
Cali should be preparing for a Killer Whale invasion. The Nukes are just a cover for their dastardly scheme.
have they ever apologized or issued a retraction? I don't know the answer to that, just asking.
I can't believe I'm doing this, but I found this comment from Section 1 from a few years ago.
It is a completely corrupt enterprise, from the top down. There's Paul Anger, the Publisher. Who lied in his column defending Rosenberg and Snyder. There's Sharp; and there's Michigan beat-writer (and Rosenberg co-conspirator) Mark Snyder who is still there, still acting as the conduit of Michigan athletics for Freep readers. And don't forget Mitch "Mateen Cleaves' Sweater" Albom. And there are the as-yet unidentified editors who signed off on Rosenberg/Snyder as they used anonymous sources and methods that appear to have been contrary to the Freep's own rules, not to mention all good journalistic sense. There is a lot to condemn at the Free Press, apart from Rosenberg.
;-)
I commented in this Moderation Action Sticky thread.
I see Seth occasionally at games and other stray events here and there. Haven't seen Brian-dad in a very long time.
Snyder is still there.
If their editors (like Paul Anger) will circle the wagons and shamelessly defend their staff members over what happened in the Sports section (and give sanctuary to a fabricator and a professional troll [RIP]), then who's to say the cancer won't or hasn't metastasized to other, actually important sections of the newspaper? If you can't trust anything that's published in the Sports section, why would you trust anything else they print?
Just my take. Freep-free since 9/1/09, and I don't really miss it anymore.
Also retired is the editor most at-fault for Rosenberg on the original series, Gene Myers. His retirement column is here.
And in it he never even acknowledges the controversy. Almost none of them have ever given a meaningful account, as far as I know; Rosenberg has done a cursory self-defense in a few rare speeches, mostly where he is confronted about it.
Needs a Chat Sports link to hit the MgoTrifecta.
And/or Bleacher Report
Too bad for him. Probably more of a reflection of WDFN's status than his own performance. They have nothing else to bring people in. They're still on AM, when the other sports radio station(s) is (were) on FM.
Hope he lands a bigger and better gig.
He calls games all over the place. He'll be fine. I'm surprised he still had a show on the radio that lasted this long.
Just wouldn't work together. I like Matt, but he can be kind of a bore on the radio. Maybe he'll be different with a co-host.
and is always pleasant and easy to talk to, but on radio I find him a little boring. Better as a play by play guy
I don't find him boring. I find him arrogant. I remember Barry Bonds saying he would never play in Boston because it was too racist a city. Shep responded saying the comment was irresponsible. LOL. This is the same city that had the N word trending on Twitter after PK Suban destroyed them in the playoffs. Same place that attacked Adam Jones last night with racist rants causing the league release a statement.
Bingo.
When I tune into my local sports talk radio show I need my host to yell constantly about meaningless topics. Also helps if he can argue with moronic callers and I personally need new #hottakes delivered after every commerical break.
is absolutely no chance that Shepard and Mike Valenti will share a studio with each other. What they do on the air is so different I would not even consider it the same "job." I doubt Shepard will end up on the Ticket. I did not think he was the best or anything, but what you can say about Shepard is that he talked sports, and exclusively sports. That could come across as boring, but when I wanted to hear about relevant sports topics in Detroit in the AM, and not the latest Trump scandal, what Kanye West just did, etc. etc., I would change it to Shep.
The Ticket is kind of sports info-taintment. They are almost like variety shows as opposed to sports talk. I get that is what most people are into right now but it is different. I don't think Shep and 97.1 will ever cross paths.
Matt's a nice guy, does enough PBP/work with FSD that he will be fine, but I would hope he wouldn't sink to the level of the shit in Southfield that somehow is the only sports talk station in Detroit.
about him being Valenti's co-host, of course. And I agree that Shepard was pretty vanilla on the air. I like him doing Michigan basketball, but I only listened to his morning show when WTKA went to commercial.
This is exactly correct
I upvoted you for username and avatar.
At least on average EDIT - meant to reply to post beneath
because in 1 year 116 days you've managed 5 whole points. Terrific.
Slow and steady Dr. Slow and steady.....
No way could he stand that punk
I am pretty sure that Shepard and Valenti have a connection. Matt use to be on the show a long time ago when I use to listen (I have been Valenti free for over 5 years now). I believe he was teh producer for the Valenti show prior to taking off and trying it out on his own.
While it may be tough to "go back". THere is that connection, I guess it would depend on the how much Shepard and Valenti stayed in touch.
Either way, I am and will still not listen to Valenti......
speculating that they may go out of business within the year.

FWIW, iheart cut a bunch of their sports guys on the radio stations in Denver yesterday too, including a guy who doubled as the Colorado Buffs play-by-play guy. So Matt wasn't the only one, unfortunately. It's good that he still has U-M hoops and EMU football gigs.
Valenti & Shepard - Because having one know-it-all on the show wasn't enough.
But he has no business doing PBP, and we all know this. I wish Beckmann hadn't been let go but understand why. Whoever is in charge of radio for Michigan football needs to find us someone that can become the voice of the program on radio. Blaha may have lost his touch a bit over the years but he and Staee football go hand in hand (same with him and the Pistons.) Michigan needs someone like that for football PBP
Is there some way to get the mgomoneycannon behind bringing Ufer back from the dead?
Some doctor in a dimly lit room somewhere in UMHS.
