OT-Marshawn Lynch at media day

Submitted by trueblue262 on
I know he has his right to not speak, but it's rediculous.
He's answering all questions with "I'm just here so I won't get fined"

But its such an outdated concept.  Do we really need 40 reporters asking Marshawn "how important is the game this week?".  Its the same shitty questions from the same shitty reporters.  If you dare give an decent answer the media will twist your words to get page clicks.  Fuck them.

Well there's already 53 posts on this message board having little to with the a NFL. Sports center just spent a little more time on the NFL. If no NFL player ever did an interview or a pc the league wouldn't be what is today. What would be ridiculous is if the NFL didn't enforce it's rules. No one ever learned anything about football from a Super Bowl media day anyways, that's not the point.

If the NFL just let guys out of it without fines then no one would ever show up.

There'll always be players who crave being in front of the camera or microphone.  The few who don't like it won't be missed.  Let Marshawn Lynch have his peace.

Yes, Lynch is an asshole because the only thing he wants to say to parasitic reporters is "I have a charity event coming up to benefit inner city youth from Oakland"

Dude is clearly anxious about addressing the media, well beyond what any normal person's anxiety about it would be like. And by all accounts he's not in it for the money, he's in it to play ball and give to his charity.

For that you call him an asshole? Get real man, the assholes are the ones asking him the same stupid questions over and over again

are wearing on me.  I had no rooting interest until yesterday, then Sherman was irritating yesterday and now Lynch being Lynch.  I kind of hope New England caps these guys now.

People hated the Baltimore/NYG SB because both offenses suck.  But this one delivers serious dislike for the actual people and franchises in the game.  If only both teams had similar hate for each other.  Then there would be something in the actual game to look forward to.

Seahawks are definitely becoming the voice of the "F You Godell"  movement that is getting louder every day among the players.  The NFL would be wise to find a way to reverse this trend, which ultimately will require a change at the top.  Fining guys for acting up on the field or at a press conference they don't want to attend will only make matters worse, especially if the Seahawks win.

He lost trust in the media when they blasted him for being a "thug" when he was in Buffalo for misdemeanors. It's kinda petty now, but I don't get why the media can't just get over it. Lynch is just fulfilling his contract duties.

How about this argument:  Marshawn, you're getting paid MILLIONS of dollars in an ENTERTAINMENT INDUSTRY.  Your job ONLY exists because of viewers and fans.  Tiddly Winks isn't a pro sport for a reason.  The NFL requires its players and coaches to have media contact to, you know, grow your business, give your customers what they want, etc.  A player refusing to talk to the media is like a McDonald's clerk offering you the hamburger but not the fries.

Now, one player not talking to the media, obv., the NFL empire rolls on uninterrupted.  Heck, you could ever say, Marshawn is generating more media attention for the NFL by not talking to the media.  (Wrap your head around that one.)

But it makes sense that the NFL can't have one Marshawn, b/c then, you'd have ten, and then a hundreds, and soon, players might refuse to talk to the media regularly, and your media partners get upset, it becomes a bargaining chip w/ both media and players union, etc.

Charles Barkley famously one said, totally incorrectly, that "I'm not a role model."  Sorry Charlie, you are a role model, by agreeing to take millions of dollars in an entertainment industry like sports.  You can't have one without the other.  They don't play pro football with no fans and no TV coverage.  (Well, in some European cities they do, but that's another matter.)  Marshawn has to live by the same rule -- if you don't like it, don't go pro.

...that's in it for the interviews?

Take a poll of Seahawk season ticket holders. Do they care whether Lynch talks on media day?

Take a poll of the general Seattle population, ask them if they'd be more likely to buy Seahawk tickets if Lync answered questions at pressers.

NFL stadiums are full because of the football games. There's TV coverage because people want to see the football games. They could stop having pressers altogether, tomorrow, and it wouldn't impact ratings or attendance one iota.

That this is what the fans want is bull. This is about what reporters want. The reporters' point of view gets pawned off as the fans' because all you ever see in the press is the reporters' point of view, not the fans'.

Loathe as Pete Carroll is around these parts he always encourages his guys to be who they are. Marshawn is not a guy that likes to talk to the media. The media and the NFL are the ones making this a big deal. If they would leave him alone and just not fine him he'd go about his business as quietly as possible and no one would care. Marshawn is not the one to blame for this.

Whatever. There's absolutely no reason to ask him questions at this point unless you just want to mention his new non-answer in an article. I'm completely fine with him not answering questions.

Ahhhhh "Classy"

The catch-all adjective to describe something someone else does that others don't like. How is it any less classy to not talk to the media than it is to be overtly antagonistic with them a la Bill Belichick or Lloyd Carr?

When did the English language become so corrupt? Just because you don't agree with the poster's view, which is obvious, doesn't mean he can't apply the word "classy" to this particular scenario. Do you honestly need someone to grab a thesaurus and choose a word you like?

Your snark is completely unwarranted here.

Carying a football in front of 80,000 live fans, with millions watching on TV, apparently that does NOT induce anxiety.

But talking to a reporter -- sometimes a really HOT one, where are you Inez? -- causes so much anxiety he can't function?

Puh-lease.  This is an act by Marshawn, that's it.  Maybe the root of it is, he doesn't want to do it.  But by now, it's just his shtick.  He's a pampered, overpaid athlete, and he is sticking to his guns because he can, and because a $50K fine is like lunch money to him.

Press conferences are awful.  All they are is a game between the media, who wins if they goad someone into saying something stupid which can then be replayed constantly for the next 24-48 hours, and the players/coaches, who win if they say nothing of interest.  I don't have any particular feelings about Lynch, but I love that someone out there has had enough of playing this stupid game.  I wish all players & coaches would just stop showing up until the media starts asking real questions.  Don't give me "how did you feel when you scored that touchdown?"  Ask something of real tactical substance about formations, play-calls, etc.  Otherwise just let the team put a little news-bulletin out with relevant pieces of info (injuries, other announcements) and skip the whole damn charade.

Not entirely. The rumor goes that he was burned by the local media a few times taking his quotes out of context when he first started in the league with Buffalo. Additionally he had a few legal misdameanor's that occured and Lynch didn't appreciate reporters branding him a "thug and a lowlife." Ever since then he's been very cagey with the media in general. If anyone around here has citations for these alleged misquotes though I would love to see them because I have never been able to find them.

Good for him.  Why should he have to answer meaningless questions and why does the media keep asking him questions when its clear this is what's gonna happen?

...the headshot they show for him is so messed up?  Dude is cross-eyed and looking off camera.  I never laughed because I wasn't sure if he had a vision or other physical/mental issue.

Sorry to thread jack but has anyone been following the mini- Daishon Neal controversy with Mattison? Supposedly Mattison said something along the lines of "you'd never get into Michigan without a football scholarship" and Neal Sr. Promptly showed him the door. I'd start a thread on the (non)story but I'm on the iPad.

Oh, I fully agree. I think it's a little ridiculous that this is being brought to light. Maybe Neal was asked point blank why he chose to stick with Nebraska, maybe it was unsolicited. Regardless, I don't know if what was said (or wasn't said) warrants dragging Mattison and Michigan's name through the mud.
