OT - Kid Gets Free Wendy's Chicken Nuggets for a Year with Most Retweeted Tweet of All-Time

Submitted by EastCoast Esq. on

Back in April, Carter Wilkerson asked Wendy's how many retweets he would need to get free nuggets for a year. Wendy's twitter account replied "18 Million"

In just over a month, Carter broke Ellen's record for most retweets for a single tweet with a little over 3.4 million. While he's still a few short of 18 million (is that even possible?), Wendy's rewarded his record by fulfilling his wish. Pretty cool if you ask me.

.@carterjwm is now the most retweeted tweet of all-time. That’s good for the nuggets, and $100k to @DTFA. Consider it done. #nuggsforcarter pic.twitter.com/k6uhsJiP4E

Just goes to show how few people actually use Twitter. They claim to have 313M monthly active users, but 3.4M is the most RTd tweet of all time. This tweet got a ton of publicity and high profile RTs. The guy even went on Ellen. I would have guessed the most RTd tweet was much higher than that.

313m active users seems rather high. But then, I think that tweet was RT'd by significantly fewer than half the active people I follow. On the third hand, a lot of the people I follow are content types who aren't likely to retweet it.

I didn't, generally not being the type to retweet this sort of thing, but I gave it a second thought.

I wonder what free nuggets for a year is valued at in terms of cash value. Depending on that and his expected nugget intake without winning this, he may end up spending more in taxes than he would have spent in nugget purchases over the year had he not won this.

It all depends on what is considered "nuggets for a year." At the most generous, I would assume that he gets one 10-piece order every day for a year. I don't know how much a 10-piece order costs but we can assume it's around $4 (which should be safely overestimating the cost in order to get an upper bound on cash value). Rounding 365*4 up, we can estimate a taxable value of $1500. I don't know anything about this guy but I doubt he is in a super high tax bracket, so let's tax it at a rate of 15%. That would make him pay $225 in taxes on his free nuggs. This would drop to $150 in the 10% bracket or increase all the way up to $594 if he is in the highest tax bracket and pays a marginal rate of 39.6%. Using the $225 of taxes and a cost of $4 per 10-piece, he is getting a good deal if he uses it at least 57 times. A question which I am not sure about is what the value would be if they actually send him 365 physical coupons. Usually those coupons say something like, "cash value .001 cents". I don't think he could but I would have to look into it and see if he could claim that as the value of this income.

It was a kid that asked for free food, that's it. This kid was invited on Ellen, because he asked a corporate account for free food. On Twitter. I saw someone in the replies to Wendy's tweet say "well-deserved" - are they serious?

Haters drove WD away from MGoBlog, and with all the extra free time he wins a mountain of chicken nuggets. I bet he hoards them all for himself to get even.

Where I'm from, "nugs" mean something else.   Though, I'd be down for "free nugs for a year".  Maybe I need to retweet my local dispensary.
