"Meme" is a word crafted by Dawkins (I think) to describe pervasive bits of information in society. 4chan popularly used it to describe ideas pervasive on those boards, but the word lost its meaning largely when the export of specific ideas, largely unknown in their new context, retained the labelling of "meme." The word is now commonly used to describe any repeated internet action or idea, even if the presence is minimal.

The headline basically refers to him killing a joke, I think, because if anything, Jameis has brought more attention to the saying.

I don't know.  A national title contender holding out its Heisman winner QB for half of maybe its most difficult game* of the regular season is a pretty serious response to this.  I'm sure they feel public pressure because of the pathetic way they've handled him so far, but if you just focus on this incident in particular, this isn't exactly a weak punishment.

(*ND, maybe?  Both of those games are in Tallahassee.)

on that challenge, but Arclight Brewing, which has only been open for a couple months now, doesn't bottle or can their brews yet.  I'm not so sure that a filled growler would survive the trip, and it might be cheaper to send you a bus, train or even airline ticket here than to ship that filled growler to you.

I will say this, however:  their "When Worlds Collide" IPA compares favorably to any other IPA I've ever had---and I'm planning on bringing a full growler of it to this Saturday's tailgate to share with friends.

He seems to display narcissistic and sociopathic tendencies. In other words, he seems to have no conscience. One would think that a human being under investigation for sexual assault (and even if it was "consensual" the encounter was, as I undrestand it, tawdry) would buckle down and stay off the radar, if not because he felt guilty about the whole thing then at least because he would want to repair his image. But he seems not to care a whit. I would be embarrassed if this person represented my school in any way.

I do not see a bright future for Jameis.

His future will be as bright as someone's can be given that he'll most likely have to muddle through on the 18-20MM he'll undoutably get as the first pick in the NFL draft next year.

How long he'll last in the NFL however is another question altogeher.

watching his act is like watching a slow moving train wreck. I honestly hope I'm wrong, and that he gains some maturity and improves his decision making.

However, when his Dad blames the university for not having someone "keep an eye on him" to keep him from getting in trouble, that seems like a lack of strong parenting and enabling a kid to do whatever he wants.

super immature. super talented. allowed to get away with shit. making bad choices on a regular basis .. not a good combo.

He appears to denote mild intellectual disability. He is a moron who is good at football and will probably be bad at life based on the evidence. Maybe he hasn't had the upbringing or support to be a highly functioning intelligent person or even develop common sense on a very basic level. Might not be his fault...but he is an adult now and I don't see a bright future either. Who cares. If the the current trend continues he will be just another dime a dozen idiot that will likely bring no value to society. One could argue that he is just young and goofing off etc. but if that's your idea of funny at any age then you are clearly lacking character, intelligence, creativity, and self control.

Everyone carries an HD video camera with a built in internet connection in their pocket now.  If you are standing on a table in public screaming obscenities for any length of time, SOMEONE is going to take a video of you.  If you are famous, EVERYONE is going to take a video of you.

I sort of find this punishment a bit lame. He shouted words in public that did not hurt anyone. It's not like he said anything racial or directed it towards someone in a derogatory manner.

I'm also pretty sure no one that heard him spontaneously burst into tears because they were so offended.

To me that would imply that a legimate attempt was made to investigate the allegation properly, which didn't seem to be the case.

I agree with your larger point though, that it is boneheaded behavior from somebody who was accused of sexual assault/rape. Winston is clearly not the sharpest tool in the shed, to the say the least.

I wasn't expecting FSU to do anything, so kudos to them on this one.

Normally I'd say that this was a dumb comment but it didn't hurt anyone, but with this kid, it's clear that he's learned next to nothing since his sexual assault debacle last year. Maybe taking away football from him, even if it's just for a half, will help open his eyes a little bit.

I doubt it though.

"this was a dumb comment but it didn't hurt anyone"

The National Organization For Women might want to argue that.
