OT - It's Official, This Was The Best NFL Playoff Weekend EVER!

Submitted by Nervous Bird on January 23rd, 2022 at 10:10 PM

Bills/Chiefs was the culmination of the best NFL Playoff Weekend ever. All 4 divisional round games were walkoff wins. 3 underdogs win, and the finale was an overtime classic where 3 touchdowns, a FG, and a two point conversion were scored UNDER the 2 minute warning in regulation!

What do the sports shows lead with tomorrow morning? The upstart Bengals who had to overcome a phenomenal defensive effort from the Titans? Or, the Titans QB who threw an INT with less than 30 seconds left in the game? Do they lead with yet another Packers and Aaron Rodgers playoff collapse? How about the Matthew Stafford led Rams who had the game in hand, and literally tried to fumble it away? They gave the GOAT Tom Brady chance after chance, and he took advantage of it and forced over..t..., uhh, not quite! 4th Quarter Matthew hit 2 passes to get the Rams into FG range, and Tampa's former kicker won the game for the Rams!

Or, do they lead with one of the 10 greatest playoff games in the Super Bowl Era?! Mahomes had it won, then he didn't. Josh Allen had it won, and then he didn't. Mahomes again had it won, and then he didn't. Allen AGAIN had it won, and then... you know the rest. ALL in the last 2 minutes of the game! Whew! It's all downhill from here. There's no way that Championship Sunday with the Bengals/Chiefs and 49ers/Rams matchups can top this weekend. Wow! Just wow!

For those who didn't watch, the KC/BUF game was an instant classic. As OP mentioned there were 3 TD (all lead changes) within the last 2 minutes of regulation, plus a FG to tie as time ran out. Then a TD in overtime on the opening drive.  Mahomes threw for 177 yds after the 2 minute warning.  Wild game for sure!

Truly best divisional weekend ever. Having said that, both teams I wanted to win today lost. Had just taught my two year old to say “Stafford pooped the bed”. No, son. Your dad did.

I used to have this attitude. But now I'm rooting for him. It's clear he has what it takes to win, and dare I say all those years in Detroit trained him for that moment against Tampa Bay. It was so great to see him stop the curse of Tom Brady with an absolute dime over the top to Kupp (and speaking of massive defensive coaching errors, wtf was Tampa Bay doing there???)

Agreed, amazing games, especially the Bills/Chiefs game which instantly became an all time classic! Although I still wish the NFL OT rule was changed. Everyone knew that when the Chiefs won the coin toss, they were going to go down and easily score a TD without the Bills offense ever touching the ball. Anti climactic way for that game to end. You can criticize the CFB OT rules, but at least they give equal possessions to both teams and it's also infinitely more exciting.

I shook my head at the Bills when with 13 seconds to play they acted as if the game was over. I told my wife that they/the Bills needed to make KC return that kick-off and run time off the clock-cuz Mahomes can easily get you within FG range in two plays-which he did. Even a blind hog finds an acorn but here I nailed it. Reid demolished the Bills coaching staff on this one. Hats off to KC...WOW!

Agree, and even as a Chiefs fan, I think both teams should get the ball regardless. Ironically, this same scenario happened to the Chiefs against Brady and the Pat a few years ago. After, the Chiefs owner tried to get the rule changed so that both teams would have a chance in OT. The rest of the owners voted his proposal down. No idea if the Bills owner voted yay or nay, but I know which way he would vote this morning.

This season has had a ton of exciting games, especially the nights games this year, where it seemed like 80% were really tight.

This weekend was special though: 3 walk off FGs and then the KC/Bills night cap....incredible to watch.

Best end result of the weekend to me?

Probably "byebye A-aron" by a slight margin over Matthew Stafford advancing, but only because the loss to the Rams sidelines the GOAT (hopefully not meaning the end of Tom's career).

But as good as all the other 3 games were, that Chiefs-Bills game was at a whole different level of great!

I hadn't watched an NFL game in at least 15 years before tonight. I happened across the Chiefs/Bills game as I was looking for a way to kill some time.

What a game. I had no rooting interest in either team, but I couldn't stop watching. Incredible football.

I used to never watch NFL. When you go from watching college football entirely and then you watch the NFL, its absolutely incredible what the top level QBs can do. If that game had college OT rules, it might've gone 20 OT because no one was stopping Allen or Mahomes at the end of the game

As a Bills fan, the weekend as a whole was amazing.  But Leslie Frazier is a moron for that shitty end of the game.  Also, I hope the Bengals annihilate the Chiefs.  Fuck Pat Mahomes, I hate him by association.  His brother is enough to make me hate that entire family.

Equal "chances," but not equal probability.  Team that goes last in NCAA OT gets an advantage, similar to how the team that goes first in NFL OT gets an advantage.

Both the NCAA and NFL rules give an advantage to the team that wins the coin toss.

I say, have both offenses and both defenses play simultaneously from the 25.  No clock, just 2 independent play clocks for both sides.  First team to score a TD wins.  Teams can opt for a FG, but other team gets to keep playing and wins if they get a TD, loses if they score nothing, and pushes the game to another round of OT if they score a FG.  Discourages lollygagging and timeouts, since first team in the endzone wins, regardless of the number of plays it takes to get there.

To prevent entanglement, if for any reason an offense is pushed more than 20 yards back from the starting 25, they lose.  50 yard line is considered out of bounds and defense wins if an offensive player runs backwards past midfield.

Great weekend unfortunately my beloved Bills were left out again.

Also kind of sad Tom B lost today, hope we get to see him play at least one more year.  The guy hasn´t lost a beat.

The Bucs lost today because their pass protection was awful.  And their defense was just as bad.  Kupp is a great WR and props to Stafford for getting him the ball, but Tampa's secondary shit the bed pretty badly multiple times.  They were so bad that Lavonte David threw his helmet in disgust and was flagged 15 yards for unsportsmanlike conduct.  I was rooting for Brady but congrats to Stafford.

The Bills-Chiefs game was amazing.  I really wanted to see Buffalo win but whatever.  Excellent entertainment.

That was unbelievable. I’m a Steelers fan, so no dog in the fight. Just casually watched at first and then got sucked in and now I’m drinking a bourbon to recover from it all. Only downside was I had a fantasy football playoff roster with nearly  all Bills including Gabriel Davis, and would cruise to winning the $400 pot if only those 13 long seconds hadn’t happened.

Allen and Mahomes - whoa. Could not have played better clutch football. Gotta feel for Buffalo fans.

Honestly, that was one of the best football games I've ever seen.

NFL has so much parity - truly exciting. Big cities, small towns. Tons of upsets. So many great players.

OT rules are kind of frustrating, but someone has to win. Definitely prefer teams winning with a real drive rather than the crazy college OT rules.

Game Theory discussion (Romo raised both of these in the broadcast):

1. Should the Bills have squibbed the kickoff with 13 seconds left?

2. With 7 seconds left and the Chiefs on their own 40-something, should the Bills have rushed no one (instead of 4) and put 4 extra DBs/LBs on the field to clog the medium range zones where Mahomes almost had no choice to throw into?

I say maybe on No. 1, because they KC could have taken an immediate knee with significantly better field position and maybe a couple seconds off the clock (given that the clock doesn't start until the ball is touched by the receiving team). But still, even 2 seconds might have been worth it.

I say definitely yes on No. 2. Mahomes has to throw immediately or it's going to be the last play of the game, so the rush is immaterial in that instance. To me, this one would have been much more likely to change the outcome of the game.

Definitely yes to #1. 100%. Should’ve swib kicked with 13 seconds. You need time to come off clock. Otherwise with TO’s, math says 2 25 yard plays, in FG range. Not giving Mahomes that chance.

#2, definitely doing something different. It’s like Buffalo played no boundary D. Gave Kelce middle for a free 30 yards. They had a timeout, so just very dumb.
