OT: Ideal Girlfriend's Sports Preference

Submitted by LinemenForever on
I've had this conversation many times with friends and I was interested in your thoughts. My girlfriend loves watching football and hockey. Trips to the Big House and Yost are her ideas of awesome dates. I know, I know, I have found the one. But at the same time she despises watching basketball and baseball. For your ideal girlfriend/wife/significant other, what one other sport (I'm assuming all of us would choose football) would you prefer she like?

For me there is no question that football is the one. Nothing grabs me like Michigan football. Still it would be nice if she were into basketball, baseball and hockey. Dude if your girl likes football and hockey you need to just be happy with that.

Right after we were married I took her to a Wings/Maple Leafs game. She broke out a god damn romance novel. Last Wings game she went to. Took her to her first Michigan Football game this year and she loved the entire experiance. Oh, and wrestling, she was a wrestling cheerleader when we were in high school. We still go to several events a year.

Why the FUCK do you need a woman to do everything with? It's bad enough you have to pretend to want something other than sex (even to get sex!) for the rest of your miserable existence--why can't a guy kick badk and enjoy watching sports with his buddies or alone--are you THAT fucking co-dependent that she needs to sit next to you and nag you to death even then? Think about it. Three hours out of the week to be left alone to do the ONE thing that doesn't remind you that your dreams are trashed and you have a permanent mom and four demons to chase around for the next (rest of your pathetic life). Fuck that. Get to the bar, with ye friends, enjoy the revelry, the game, the beer---now THAT's living!

Though I don't quite share the King's pessimistic relationship outlook, his words are full of wisdom. While dating a girl with legitimate sports interest can have its upside (old episodes of Michigan Replay replace foreplay), most girls just aren't into it enough for it to be a serious bonus. On the flip side, what if the girl is a legit sports fanatic who happens to support a different team? If UM loses a game I don't want to hear that "Tate is a punk bitch" all night before tearfully submitting to my girl's forceful advances. Couples don't have to (and probably shouldn't) do everything together. As it is, my girl could care less about sports, but realizes how important it is to me (e.g. knowing better than to schedule anything on a fall Saturday). She drops me off at the bar with a handful of cash and picks me up afterward for a round of victory sex (or hours of weeping in the shower, depending on the outcome of the game). I get to enjoy the game without worrying about whether or not she is bored and I never get that, "Are you sure you need that dozenth beer?" or "Do you really have to use all that profanity, it is just a game?" look. At the same time, if she wants to go to a chick-flick with a girlfriend, I don't complain and am more than happy to entertain myself for a few hours with some of that internet porn (turns out there is way more than I could ever watch). I guess the point I'm trying to make is that relationships are about sacrifices, and as long as both people are willing to give a little to get a lot, you probably have a good thing going.

I'm all for guys hanging with other guys to watch sports, but when you're a female who likes sports, it's hard to find other females who like sports, so you have to find guys to watch sports with. Women who like football are few and far between, so my husband gets me and my swearing ways on Saturdays. As for baseball and pretty much every other sport, he hangs with the guys.

We used to see those jersey wearing girls at the Joe.... They'd go to the hockey games all dressed up lookin for some friendly "business man" and not care much about the game (unless there was a certain player looking for road beef) We'd call them HockeySluts. I agree though... Girls in jerseys rock.

A good test to do is take a new girl to a Michigan football game. If she has a great time, she may be a keeper....if she is a bitch and bitches about the cold, the bench seats etc. and wants to leave early... dump her immediately.

EX-wife: insisted on wearing her new orange and blue jacket to her first and last M game with me. We were playing Illinois. Current Wife: Got the temporary "M" tat on her cheek for an august game and got to show off the white "M" a week later as the sunburn progressed on the rest of her face... Ex-Wife: Gave me disgusting looks for screaming at Navarre when he'd fire a laser into the helmet of the Right Tackle. Current Wife: Shouting "It's Great.... To Be.... A Michigan Wolverine!" after the last second Manningham TD vs PSU. EX wife: Saw people exiting at halftime and was thinking we were going home. (Then she was pissed when I said no) Current Wife: Wanted to stay after the game to hear the BAND! haha... great memories...

Its funny this topic came up because my wife and I and two other couples are going to the Cincinnati to watch the NFL game on Sunday but we are gonna be up there Saturday morning. The other girls want to go shopping but my wife is pissed because she would rather be watching the game with the guys but is cool enough to bite the bullet and go shopping so the guys can hang out at the bar and watch the Michigan game. This is the same woman that I find watching ESPN and playing Tiger Woods on Wii when I come home from work. She sits and watches baseball, golf, basketball, and basically any competition that is decided by a score without even thinking twice.

... when the Pats lost in the SuperBowl. She's a big Brady fan (partly because he went to Michigan and partly because girls dig him). I have never loved her more than at that moment. But, in general, as long as she doesn't get jealous about Saturday's in autumn, I don't care what she likes.

Is cooking and cleaning considered competitive? I joke. Honestly if I could find ONE girl that is as passionate about sports as I, I'd say the vows and put the ring on her finger then and there. I met a girl once in high school who just absolutely loved college football and I couldn't stop thinking about her till she moved out of the state. Haven't found another since...

My girlfriend is great. Not only does she LOVE Michigan football, but she reads mgoblog. Like, she reads it more than I do. And she posts more than I do on the forum. She also loves basketball (Michigan and the Pistons), and she plays and watches golf. Unfortunately, she doesn't like hockey or baseball, but she does enjoy going to Yost and Comerica (if only for the hotdogs). She's also willing to watch the Wings with me if it's a playoff game, even though she doesn't particularly enjoy it; she's just that good. The one thing that hurts is that she doesn't like pro football, and it's pretty difficult to get disinterested people to enjoy watching the Lions. Maybe they'll be good some day... In the meantime, I'm satisfied that I have the best sports girlfriend in the world.
