OT: Graduation Ring
I'm graduating at the end of winter '11 so I'm looking into ordering my graduation ring now.
Who's the best company to go with, Balfour or Jostens? (or any other companies)
Any alums with advice/experiences to share when it came to getting your class rings?
I have had to have it resized and repaired and they were great to work with. Resizing is free.
I have had it since 1978. No complaints.
I also got a Jostens. I haven't had to take advantage of the lifetime resizing but the gem did fall out once (10 years after purchase) and it was repaired at no cost with no hassle.
+1 for the reference.
To the OP, I'd go with Jostens. Never had any problems. They are well made.
Cracked the stone in it, and it was replaced free and quickly, Jostens is the way to go.
Hey Beilein, you never answered my question. The other day you said you were in the Washington Twp area. Are you working out there or is it your hometown?
Oh sorry. I live in Shelby Twp. in the summer. I'm near the 26 Mile/Van Dyke area
I grew up at 30 & Van Dyke. You an Ike or Romeo grad?
Neither, a De La Salle grad even though Ike is just minutes away
... you will not wear it by 2012.
The only rings of that ilk that look good IMHO are of the Marines variety. On some 70 year old guy with a grey jarhead haircut who looks like he could still break your effing neck.
I bought a UM one, best at the time, and I didn't wear it much at all. Starting the summer after graduation.
In the workplace, you look like Douchey McDouche ("Look at me! I went to Michigan!"). Nights and weekends, who wants to have a big-ass ring on your finger?
Think for a moment. When is the last time you saw one outside of A2 city limits?
Save your money, go to Vegas, and lay it all on UM-OSU with the points. Then go to the club and make it rain...
I've got to agree. My roommate went to Texas A&M and it's a rite of passage for them. EVERYONE down there gets a ring when they graduate, but I wouldn't recommend it for schools like us where it's not a tradition.
It never fails. If a guy is wearing his class ring, 99% of the time he also has an ND diploma hanging in his office.
At least, that's been my experience. Anyone else notice that too?
Well, like I mentioned, 100% of A&M grads that I know wear rings. Don't know too many Domers though.
I didn't buy one at any level of education because I don't like to wear jewelry. I've even gotten out of the habit of wearing my wedding ring everyday because I take it off so much.
do you actually wear rings (assuming that you did not play a sport)? I rarely see it in the business world, except for Texans (and some other Southerners), who all seem to love them.
I kind of want one (assuming I could get one retroactively), but don't even see anybody in the Northeast wear one. While I am pretty douchey to begin with, I'd like to not increase it.
Northeast Douche=MGoBlog Regular.
I have the same aversion living in the midwest. The only guys wearing something other then a wedding ring are with the Mob or Pimpin Ho's.
I actually have two:
Signet style for business.
Traditional for weekends.
I agree that the Traditional style is over the top for business as you get older - I think a young guy can pull it off much easier.
My opinion for what it's worth.
Yes - you can get them retroactively. I did that with my Traditional about 5 years ago.
EDIT: I don't have any Hos, so I must be Mob!!!
I don't think you can go wrong with either company. I went with a white gold traditional ring with a blue stone from Herff Jones and couldn't be happier. I didn't get it to be flashy or to say "I graduated from Michigan".... I got it as a present form my father who has his own college ring that he wears everyday. I don't wear mine all the time... generally I don't wear any jewelry or watch other than my wedding ring. But when I do wear it, I don't feel like a douche... but rather I feel a connection to my dad.
Thanks for the advice guys, I'm mainly getting one to have as a keepsake. I'll probably wear it for a year or two until the novelty wears off or god forbid my body changes and it stops fitting. When I got my HS ring my sophomore year there, I wore the entire year and by time I was a senior it found its way to the safe deposit box.
I have a ring. It was a graduation gift from my family.
My mother, though a Sparty, understood my passion, and I quote: "You'll end up being buried with it."
championship rings look cooler and get you more box so go walk on the hockey team
and every time we win a state championship (4 times now), we use Jostens. They are the way to go.
I bought mine, and got enough comments about being juvenile that I stopped wearing it.
Somehow, a class ring seems dorky to women. Just so ya know.
