OT: Get vaccinated, maybe win $1M (if you live in OH)

Surprised this hasn't posted - I first saw it this morning.

The governor here is using some of the covid relief funds to create a lottery as an incentive to get vaccinated.  One drawing per week to win $1M, running for 5 weeks.  Maybe not the best solution (I would say less prize money per person, but more people - if sticking with the lottery concept at all), but it is a creative option at least.

Hey, I appreciate the public service announcement, and I am fully on board with vaccinations. I am fully vaccinated myself.

But, can we PLEASE have a moratorium on COVID related posts that have nothing to do with the Univ of Michigan? EVERY COVID related thread turns into a urinating contest between the pros and the antis. We've read the same takes enough. Can't we limit their appearance to something remotely related to Michigan sports?

I had no choice. Would have been nice, though, to get paid for it.

Without being pro or anti, we're getting vaccinated regardless because we would like to travel to see family this summer. Second shot on Monday. If the government has all this cash to throw around, I wish they'd take a moment to realize that it all comes from the taxpayers (or their children, or their grandchildren, or their great-grandchildren) in the end. Not to be too political about it - I think both parties are abysmal when it comes to budgeting.

This seems quite frivolous. Of course, we'll enter anyway, and if we win, I'll accept the payment as both compensation for moving here and for admitting there's a price on my hypocrisy. Until then, I'm at least somewhat principled.

A couple million dollars is nothing for the state gov't, especially considering it's coming from some COVID fund. Other states are blowing way more than that on ineffective advertising campaigns that have the same goal—vaccinate as many people as possible. So, as far as budgeting goes, it seems to be a more efficient way to spend that money that traditional education and media campaigns.

As advertising, this campaign is brilliant. There are a bunch of people who don't want to get vaccinated either because they don't trust it or they're too lazy or whatever. This will motivate a ton of them to get the shot. It's better than typical lotteries or product promos because in this case, the product is free. Show up for fifteen minutes, get a shot, and you get a lottery ticket that could earn you a million bucks.

They're also serving up 5 full-ride scholarships at Ohio public universities for under-18 individuals who get vaccinated/win the lottery.

If they really wanted to motivate people, they'd promise to pay their out-of-state tuition.

Instead of giving out $5M total to 5 people, why don't they give guaranteed money to individuals who get their vaccine or give 1000 people $1000 each week? Both seem like they would be more effective

To me the lottery style is a more effective use of a $5 million budget.

A big number gets you a ton of repeat awareness/news/PR value over 5 weeks through this announcement, the "who's going to win?" stories, and winner announcements/interviews. The guaranteed money for everyone who gets vaxxed wouldn't go very far as an incentive unless you dramatically increased the pot.

Exactly this. It’s a better ROI.

Studies have shown that most human beings react more strongly to fear/loss than incentive. For example, if a person learned they had just lost $100 from their wallet, their negative reaction would, for most people, be much stronger than the positive reaction to finding $100 on the street.

"Another way to think of it: many of the people who are refusing to get vaccinated are doing so because they aren’t very good at evaluating probabilities accurately."

(1) Well, when the data is obfuscated and manipulated to meet certain "goals" it is tough to trust anything.

(2) What happened to the mantra 'One life is too many?'  Interesting that it only applies if you are afraid of Covid - but not if you are afraid of the "cure".  Selective outrage is convenient, right?

I love this idea and I wouldn't be surprised if it ends up saving money in the long run. More vaccinated people means less health care costs and a better economy.

Dewine had no choice. Senate bill 22 was passed into law that would strip him of his health order power by the end of June effectively opening up the state. Not a big Mikey fan but he knows his state if full a crazy gamblers that would bet on anything. Getting people to get the vax has been a real challenge, he is betting on this being a big push to reach his own goals.

My asshole assumption is that the majority of people don't know what indemnity means and then then the majority of them who do know what it means don't even know that the manufactures have that privilege. By my finger in the air checking the wind, the number that do know and do know is still less than the total number than the total number of people that have already been vaccinated. Science.

i have a feeling u will be able to go after governnent officials including elected officials that provide manufacturers indemnity soon enough. lifting the protections for law enforcement will be the first step to making everyone in government positions personally responsible/liable for their actions. just a matter of time. i suspect this will quickly end the practice of shielding corporations from liability if those providing the shield assume the liability.

A more Putin thing to do would be to say, "We'll pick a random unvaccinated person every week and give him/her Novichok."  Or blowup their apartment building.  You get the idea.

I think there is a need to get those 30 percent on the fence vaccinated, may it be a lottery or prizes. You probably will never get those 10 to 20 percent antivaxers to vaccinate. I just hope 99 percent of Michigan fans can get vaccinated, since I would at least like to see one football game this season. But worried UM will restrict capacity to 30 percent this season and many will not get to see a game.. I sure hope the stadium gets 100 percent capacity, even if you have to show proof of vaccination to attend a game.

It's sad that this is what its come to. Bribing people to essentially ensure their own health.

Don't get me wrong, if this is what it takes to get things back to normal and its not costing the taxpayers anything, then so be it. Its just infuriating that there are enough people out there who have to make this into an actual thing.

They should enter all the names into it, and draw them, and then announce the names of the would be winners and then say, "oh, too bad, this person would have won $1 Million, but they weren't vaccinated so we're drawing the next name."
