OT - Favorite Sports Memory where You Played in the Game/Race, etc

Submitted by xtramelanin on

Mates,

Okay, so what is your personal favorite sporting memory where you played in whatever game it was, or ran in the race, etc?   Might be a 3rd grade kick ball game, little league baseball, some high school sport, whatever.   Yes, this will call for a little bit of humble-brag but we're all cyber-buddies so its assumed that some of that goes with the territory.

Cheers

Two receiving touchdowns in the RCA dome the night before Jerry Rice scoring a touchdown in the same end zone with the Raiders. Oh and I got to meet him.

It was the 2006 ALCS and we were tied at 3 in the bottom of the 9th with 2 outs and 2 on with my team up 3-0 in the series. The count was 1-0 and I jacked it into the left field bleachers sending us to the World Series. Pretty interesting huh?

High School JV hoops.  I was always undersized and didn't get the most playing time, but I once received a pass on the wing and pump faked to get the first defender in the air.  I then dribbled to the hoop along the baseline where the Center dropped down to defend.  I went up to lay it in drawing the Center to leave his feet.  I then extended to the far side for the reverse lay-up.  All net!  Crowd went wild!

I once hit a walkoff home run for my travel league team - that had me pretty pumped, and even better, it was off a changeup that was a good inch or two out of the strike zone by the time I got to it, so it was starting to get into "this pitch is so bad, only Roberto Clemente could hit it" territory. It definitely made up for me forgetting to put my foot on first and thereby botching a double play a few innings earlier.

After college, I was a substitute teacher for a bit. One week, I got gym class, which is the best sub gig there is. Even better, one day they had a teachers vs the 8th grade girls basketball game in front of the student body.

As the gym teacher (but still a sub) they actually let me play. I got into the game in the second half and shortly after I entered the game, I went nuts on defense. In addition to harassing everyone on defense, I had a quick steal, a layup, and then one of those LeBron chase down blocks. Just swatted
the shit out of it. I was killing it against those 8th grade girls.

One possession after my block, they pulled me from the game. Apparently good defense is frowned upon amongst our educators.

This past Saturday I ran a 1:48:47 25K in rainy, soggy conditions, crushing my PR by six minutes and achieving my goal of sub-1:50.

Great road race. Nice and flat for the first half, then lots of rolling hills, followed by flat terrain again as you work your way back downtown.

Lots of hoops memories. Instead of the humblebrag, I'll share what is probably my funniest-

In highschool, we had a heavyset assistant coach who split his pants all the way sitting down after a timeout and exposed his whitey-tighties. He had to coach the rest of the game with his jacket tied around his waist. He was a no nonsense type of guy and a bit of an asshole so it made it that much more enjoyable. Trying to stop giggling and getting my head back in the game was the hardest thing I've ever done in my life.

football, I am a defensive back, and it is 4th and goal, we are up by 4, with only a couple minutes left. They run the ball to my side, the linebacker takes on the fullback, and I tackle the tailback, game over.

Knocked off the returning State Champ who was 59-0 the year before, he was on a 75 match win streak. I hit him with a couple trick moves, got up by 5 points and then stalled my tail off. Ended up winning 9-7 and was voted the Most Outstanding Wrestler of the tournament. It was kind of a culmination of all my hard work and after I won the match I actually broke down in the hallway, my emotions high, and cried uncontrolably, it felt awesome!

8th grade baseball game. I was on a semi-competitive team with a couple of my good friends but I was absolutely terrible at the sport. We were playing our "arch nemesis" (but in an Illinois type of way because we never beat them).

We were miraculously up 1, and it's the bottom of the 9th (or whatever inning we played to), 2 outs, runners on 1st and 3rd. My coach has me out in right field.

Their player hits an absolute screamer that's more or less heading right at me, but, as I said, I sucked at baseball, and could never track fly balls. I take one step forward, then poop my pants cuz it's going hot in the wrong direction. I back pedal as fast as I can, and then leap with my glove extended as far over my head as I can. I don't even look at the ball (because I suck at baseball). I feel the ball hit my glove, and I clamp down as hard as I can. The ball miraculously stayed there. From there, all I remember was the endless stream of bitches

Other highlight was playing pick up basketball at a gym (Liberty in Ann Arbor). It has a 12 foot tall chain fence wall surrounding the court. I was on transition defense and they kicked it out to my friend who took a three, and I blocked it so hard that I threw that shit over the fence.

In 9th grade rec baseball I struck out 13 over 5 perfect innings (we played 7 inning games).  I got pulled because of pitch count/so other kids could pitch (it was a rec league after all). It's the only time I remember my dad getting into an argument with one of my coaches.

Wasn't an actual game but freshman through junior year at Michigan I did try out for the football team four times.  Determined to be the next great Michigan punter, I really should have learned how to kick field goals.

First one was a weekend tournament for our baseball team we had as many as six games in three days depending on if we won or lost. we didn't have enough pitchers with innings available going into the tourney. I finally convinced my coach to let me try (I wasn't a hard thrower so he didn't pay me any mind during the season) got the start in day two of the tourney and tossed 7 innings (max allowable for a weekend) of 3 hit 0 run ball. A buddy of mine and I were the OLB for our 14 y.o. football team. we were playing a team with an option QB that was just killing us. We had no answer for his speed. Coach got frustrated and called a double OLB blitz on one of the last plays before the half. We took out our teams frustration by hitting that superstar option QB so hard simultaneously that he refused to reenter the game.

I had just made the travel team, and we were playing at Sam Houston State. First play was on the kick-off team halfway throught the first quarter. Our kicker hurt his knee in practice, but still tried kicking and shanked the kick-off. An up back picked up the ball and tried to advance it. It was obvious that he wasn't used to carrying the ball because he tried to change directions without looking to where he turning. he war directly to me and I ear-holed him. It was a complete decleater. As I ran off the field, I heard some of my team mates saying that I would make the league because I could hit. That play was the acme of my playing career.

Last year I pitched a complete game which was fun. 1 hit, no walks and 0 runs.

Basketball this year i had a fun game, making 6 straight threes. I then proceeded to bring out the six shooters while running back, but I fell and twisted my ankle.

I hit two home runs in the same inning and set an RBI record for most runs in an inning. The first was a grand slam and the seond was a 3 run home run.

And by "i'll bite" I actually mean I will demonstrate that I have been waiting for years for someone to ask me this very question so I can write 6 paragraphs about one time I dominated a pickup football game, which, sadly, is pretty much the pinnacle of my sports achievement.

My freshman year I lived in Couzens, and we always played football out on Palmer field that year after class or on the weekends or whatever. We usually had enough guys to get our own game going, but on this particular day it was just me and one of my friends. We saw a big game going on so we joined just as they were about to draft teams.

I guess I am not the most athletic looking person in the world, because I always get drafted lower than I should, and on this day I was drafted dead last. Even my friend, who is six inches shorter than me and asian, got picked in front of me.  And to be fair, I'm not the biggest or the strongest or the fastest. But I was a pretty good backyard football player because I have super reliable hands and good quickness. So on our first offensive play of the game, I know there is a 0% chance the quarterback even looks at me, even though I can tell the guy who is on me has no chance of covering me. Two steps into the route, I could tell the qb was just gonna chuck it deep to his buddy. So I kind of start shadowing 'buddy' down the field even though he is my teammate. The pass comes and is underthrown, so 3-4 people stop their route and just wait for it to get there, but I timed it up perfectly so I undercut it with a full head of steam, make a jumping catch just in front of the crowd, and since they were all standing still, walk into the endzone.

I score a couple more touchdowns over the next few drives, and then they decide to change up teams. In this draft, I'm picked first, and the guy says, "I'll take Tommy Touchdown over there." At this point, I'm feeling really good. During the next game, I'm getting double covered on every play. Finally, there was a play I didn't get doubled, I yell to the qb, "check left, I've got single coverage." (Who has ever said that in backyard football? God, I was a tool).  I scored on that play. Got doubled again for the rest of the afternoon.

Finally, there was a play towards the end where it was 4th down and the other team hadn't used their one blitz every 4 downs yet. I told the qb, "I'll be doubled, but just throw it high up on the right side when the blitz comes. I'll catch it." The blitz came, qb lobbed it up. I and the two dudes covering me jump straight up for the ball. They perfectly sandwiched me as I was touching the ball so the ball got deflected exactly straight up. Because they collided into me, they both fell to either side while I fell on my ass right in the middle. The ball landed square in my chest. Just a perfect lucky deflection kind of like Roundtree's against NWestern. After the catch, some random dude said, "damn. Kid just makes plays."

Love those days where you just feel so good, and the level of competition is just right that you have to play hard, but you really are the best one on the field, and then on top of that you get a few bounces...

Played right fullback on the county champs HS soccer team - no one scored on me the entire season... my slide tackle was legendary. Good times

Played left mostly(can barely remember) but was freshman year.  Let no one score but the coach was equal opportunity and we weren't a deep team.  Would often watch the guy I marked get a cheap goal right as I was taken off to spread some PT around.

First game of my senior year we played the defending state runners-up. They were number 2 in the state of Georgia. The year before we had lost to them 37-0 at their place. It was my first start at quarterback. I had split time my sophomore year, but was moved to rb and cb my junior year because the coaches son was a senior.
They drove the ball down and scored on the first series. Our starting free safety broke his wrist (looked something like this_/----)

I have to share my brother-in-law's, since he's not a member here, and I think it's hilarious. Apparently, he had a pretty good arm back in the day and decided on a lark to go to some kind of walk-on tryout's with the Cubs. Yeah, the Chicago Cubs. Picture a tall skinny guy with a mullet and a straggly moustache. It's his turn and he goes out to the mound. He throws seven or eight pitches, the best and hardest he's got. Then the coach calls out to him, "OK, warm up over, show us what you got."

My hometown of Saginaw, Mich., had (and maybe still has) an annual thing called the Friendship Games in which teams from Saginaw compete in a variety of events against teams from a city in Canada (I think Sault Str. Marie but am not positive). One year, when I was probably 16 years old or thereabouts, I got a call from the person running the chess event saying the competition was that day and the Canadian team had shown up with only three players (four were needed). He asked if I was interested in playing for Canada, and I said "sure." So I went, won all four of my games, and took home a gold medal for the Friendship Games chess event...for Canada.

My son's team played in Cooperstown. We're from Illinois and we played teams from California, Georgia and Florida, so needless to say we got crushed. In the bottom of the first inning of the first game we played, the score was 15-0. They ended up beating us 31-0. It was the team that won the whole tournament. But the boys had a great time and my husband got some great pics of my son, one in particular with him laying out to make a catch against the back wall.

But regardless of how well your team does it's still an amazing experience. I didn't realize it at the time but 7 years later I'm fully aware of how special that opportunity was. Even prior to the actual tournament those long hours we spent on weekends doing fundraisers for the trip.. All awesome memories. Glad to hear they had a great time as well.
