OT: Favorite Guitarist

Submitted by Darker Blue on April 6th, 2021 at 8:57 PM

Tired of talking about covid I know there are some major  music fans on this board

curious as to who your favorite guitarist is? Can include favorite solo or song

for me right now it’s J Mascis. Until recently I had never rode the Dinosaur Jr train but since I’ve gotten on I can’t get off (lol)

Used to be a huge fan of David Gilmore, the solo on Mother is so damn beautiful it makes me cry

Yeah, they're pretty amazing. And Abbruzzese in that lineup was incredible.

I would also like to add Slash and The Edge. I saw both bands in 2017(?) and those dudes killed. Bono kinda stunk (and was maybe a little inebriated?) but the Edge was great, even on the keyboard parts. I was so impressed with how tight he was. I also loved Rivers Cuomo in concert; could really play.

And I have to mention Tom Morello.  And Kirk Hammett and James Hetifled. Those dudes are true masters.

Cool Story Bro: I had a college class with Tom’s mom once, unbeknownst to me.  One day I walk into class a few minutes early, and there she is sitting next to her son.  I was listening to Audioslave on my iPod (2003-ish) at the moment, and the confusion crashed my brain for a minute.

He talked a bit to the class, but funny enough, I can’t remember what he said, but more about what his mom, Mary, said, who has had an amazing life in her own right.

So many but here's a few that stand out:

Jerry Cantrell on "Rooster"

Slash on "Estranged"

Dire Straits guy on "Sultans of Swing"

Eric Clapton "It's In The Way That You Use It"

All these dudes made the guitar sing.

Pretty much every single Dire Straits song demonstrates Knopfler's guitar genius.

And if anyone is interested in guitar skills, YouTube search for Knopfler and Chet Atkins.  They collaborated on some duets, and the musicianship on display is astonishing.

I'll add this here: Glen Campbell, Jerry Reed, and Roy Clark were all outstanding guitarists.  Ritchie Blackmore, of Deep Purple, and famous for being dismissive of other guitarists, was complimentary of Roy Clark.

How about the guy Clapton said was the greatest he ever heard...Duane Allman? As for peak Duane, how about Stormy Monday? Or in a best supporting role the slide guitar for the second half of Layla? Or maybe some of his Muscle Shoals session work? For a true forgotten piece of genius check out his work on Boz Scaggs "Loan Me A Dime."

I always thought Clapton had that famous quote about someone else (maybe I'm remembering it wrong). The way I remember it was someone asked "what's it like being the best guitarist in the world?" and he said "I don't know, ask Prince", which I always thought was such a badass answer because people tend to forget how gnarly Prince is at the guitar.

Too many to count.

Gilmore, Prince, Hendrix, Page, Frusciante, Eddie

People might balk at Frusciante but listen to RHCP albums with and without him. Night and day.

All of those are some of my favorites, Cube.

But I'm also a huge jazz aficionado and Pat Metheny is about as great a guitarist as there ever was, Lyle Mays is his band mate and he's one of the best ever on keyboards.

Another fantastic jazz guitarist is George Benson.

You ask any rock guitarist and they'll tell you that playing jazz guitar is the hardest to play.
