OT: Even China hates Georgetown
The Georgetown basketball team is currently on a goodwill mission in China, where their game last night ended two minutes into the fouth quarter with a bench-clearing brawl, and a fantastic one at that.
Total schadenfreude.

Ahh, diplomacy...
August 18th, 2011 at 1:03 PM ^
Maybe we should stick to Ping Pong diplomacy?

August 18th, 2011 at 1:07 PM ^
What if we factor in the thousand or so spectators? Who are you taking then?
August 18th, 2011 at 3:40 PM ^
I'd still the American black guys who play college basketball for an elite program.
August 18th, 2011 at 1:08 PM ^
dude, don't stereotype like that. Plus, the Chinese are certain to know karate or some other martial art right.../s

Dammit. If you had left off the elipsis and the /s I would have awarded you 1,000 imaginary MGoPoints. Now, just 100. So sad...

The Hoyas embarassed America this week by getting bitch slapped by the Chinese, however I blame the coaches. The Hoyas are used to the US college game in which this type of brawl would result in potentially season ending suspensions. They should've prepared them for the reality of China which is to say that when shit goes down it GOES DOWN. This is no where close to being the first time a foreign team played in China and a fight broke out, and every time the Chinese go all the way. The guys should've been prepared for this.

Watching Georgetown get attacked is fucking schadenfreude? You're an asshole, and people like you are reason I hate Syracuse so much
August 18th, 2011 at 9:52 PM ^
I was thinking of how to respond to this post in a tasteful way (Ewing graduated from Gtown, was a player rep for NY, a highly respected coach, son is a Gtown grad, etc).

But your response was dead on and much better then what I could have done.

August 18th, 2011 at 1:30 PM ^
Is 'murica all about being knocked to the ground and getting kicked in the ribs by the Chinese?
Actually, I suppose there's some truth to that.

From that first photo it looks like we're spreading goodwill to literally hundreds of Chinese with this tour. At that rate, they're sure to love us by the year 3000. Looks like a great fight though. Can the NCAA suspend players for fighting overseas?

The first picture looks exactly like a splash page from The Death Of Superman. They're even holding their hands the same way. Epic. I will retreat to my mother's basement now...

64-64 tie.
August 18th, 2011 at 1:37 PM ^
Lots more to this than meets the eye.
Apparently China was calling intentional fouls on G'Town players for 5 straight trips, resulting in ~4 FTs per trip (and they had 30-35 FTAs vs 5-7 for G'Town). And then:
"Two minutes into the fourth, they were pressing full court, trapped one of our guards (I forget who it was), and then must have pushed or punched him on the ground after he made the outlet pass, because then there was a shoving match and then a bit of a fight, and then the whole thing set off. He tried to get away as quickly as possible as the Chinese players sort of converged on him, and then benches cleared, and then people on the Chinese bench started picking up chairs. Everyone on the other side of the court started fighting as well. Brawl spread all over the court, and then off the court."

When the refs call ten times as many fouls on the visitors as they do on the home team, there are bound to be tensions.
August 18th, 2011 at 1:40 PM ^
...of the Hoyas here. They were clearly the victims here.
Sorry, but I don't side with a Syracuse slappy just because he wants to make fun of a rival.
Here's a self-described partisan account of the game and the brawl on the Georgetown message board.
Here's an actual news account from the WaPo sports reporter who was there.

thank you.

video?
August 18th, 2011 at 3:00 PM ^
From what I could see in the video, there was a brawl.
Do you know who started it? Or what provoked it?
We haven't even heard a first person account, much less both (or all) sides to the story.
Georgetown isn't exactly known for their gentle play.
August 18th, 2011 at 3:34 PM ^
is known for it's humanitarianism? No, we should immediately blame the Amuricins!
August 18th, 2011 at 3:47 PM ^
I haven't blamed anybody, but it sure seems you have.
August 18th, 2011 at 4:00 PM ^
and I'll sleep pretty soundly tonight, too.
There's video, first hand accounts by a spectator and a reporter. China's at fault. Try not to cry too much for their poor souls.
Let's not nail ourselves to the wrong cross, here. Every once in a greeeeaaat while, it's not America's fault. And I say that with as much sarcasm as I can possibly muster.
August 18th, 2011 at 4:19 PM ^
I suspect that you routinely sleep well at night. /s
I have not blamed anybody. I say this for a second time.
If this is all the evidence you need to reach a hard conclusion, you aren't a very deep thinker.
August 18th, 2011 at 3:56 PM ^
...first hand accounts. The message board post is from a Hoyas supporter who was at the game. The WaPo article is by Gene Wang who is traveling with the team and was in attendance.
Both accounts indicate the Chinese team were the aggressors. Not sure who pissed in your Wheaties.
August 18th, 2011 at 4:32 PM ^
Both accounts indicate the Chinese team were the aggressors
I reread Wang and if Wang says the Chinese were at fault, you'll have to show me. I can't find it.
The "spectator" is a Georgetown fan who admits, more than once, to bias, and mostly complains about the officiating. And you think you can reach a fair conclusion from that?
August 18th, 2011 at 4:28 PM ^
better watch out, looks like you're getting PROFESSIONALLY LAWYERED.
