OT: Duke beats #9 Clemson 28-7

First time Duke has beaten a top-ten opponent since 1989. I guess Cade Klubnik was not the answer to Clemson’s offensive woes.

I can’t help but wonder if that ridiculous football facility has something to do with Clemson’s decline. I don’t think it’s a coincidence that the last group of upperclassmen to do anything meaningful at Clemson (2019) was the last group recruited before that facility was completed.

If you’re showing off a wiffle ball diamond, golf simulator, bowling alley, Pop-a-shot, horseshoe pit, mini-golf course, and sand volleyball court, maybe your players won’t take their jobs quite as seriously. Just a thought.

Cam - I appreciate you raising the point about Clemson’s facility.   My view has always been - do you treat an individual as a child - or - as an adult?  The Clemson facility looks like it had a lot of “child-like play” elements in it.

I’m just wondering - if only Nick had retired from Bama - and, the Tide would have offered Dabo the position.

that can't be true - i was told that the reason some teams can't win is because they don't have nice-enough facilities.

there was a whole string over the weekend about the volleyball team trending downward because they play in cliff keen and we'd never get back to elite status until they got a brand spanking-new facility.  the wrestling team is terrific and play in the same building, but hey, ignore that part.

there was no shortage of discussion about how much clemson's facilities were helping them stay in national championship contention when they were winning.  the garment-rending over our lack of similar perks was absolutely a thing, here and elsewhere.  now we're turning around and saying "mini golf equals soft?"  nope.

facilities do matter, except when they don't.  or not.  it still takes talent, and development, and coaching.  it's unclear whether dabo can do the last two.  that's the issue.

Clemson spent a lot of money trying to sell "Come spend 4 years here, wait your turn to start, we will not use the portal to put someone ahead of you" to 18 year olds who would rather just have playing time.

The portal has transformed the way we look at recruiting, because you can now take big swings at lower star guys with high ceilings/low floors and just portal your way out of it if the home run/bust recruit ends up a bust. Clemson is just stuck with Their Guys even if Their Guys don't pan out.

As I noted in the game thread, D.J. U went off for Oregon State, while Klubnick looked like last year's D.J. U. Apparently, D.J. U wasn't the problem. Every passing play is a dump off or a screen. Shipley is a great athlete, but he's a slot receiver playing running back. He's too small to break tackles and lacks the wiggle to get away from them. Who are the other skill position players of note? No one can name one. Compare their receivers to FSU's. There's no comparison at all. Clemson lacks playmakers and the scheme is now too predictable and fools no one. Dabo is done.

FIRE BAKICH.

the clemson athletic department hasn’t been the same since they fired [insert previous baseball coach’s name here]. also, the facilities suck, and the AD just sits around and lets it happen.

clemson was great for two reasons - 1) the bag, which for a while was better than anyone other than alabama’s, which got them 2) generational quarterbacks, in watson and lawrence. reason 2.5 - he had max venables around.

once those things went away (or, rather, once other teams caught up with the bag), dabo got exposed as who he was in the first place - a mediocrity that can recruit a little bit and who had a great DC.  boddicker’s right - he’s done.

This can’t be good news for Northwestern, which faces Duke on September 16th.  On at more positive note, Dabo’s tears taste like sugar.

This will certainly make Clemson a more attractive team for the SEC to add to their conference.

When do the next round of expansion talks begin?

P.S. Is there any truth to the rumor that Clemson is now exploring an extension to the ACC’s current GoR?

Clemson left 20 points our there - two fumbles right in front of the end zone, two missed close FGs. 7 Duke points were off a short field from one of those fumbles. That is a 27 point swing in a 21 point game, thanks to Clemson end zone problems. Execution matters ...

Clemson also benefitted on their only touchdown of the game on a muffed punt which gave them the ball inside the red zone when Duke looked as though it had momentum. Additionally, Duke coughed the ball up just before the half on what would have probably been a Duke field goal.

Duke is a solid team; they won 10 games last year and I figured they'd win 8-9 this year even before this win.  Clemson clemsoning a game away is the more surprising part here, especially after an offseason about how Clemson's offense was going to be reborn with Lincoln Riley's brother as OC and Cade Clubnik under center.

Dabo is still a good coach but he may really have just gotten lucky in getting Hesiman-level QBs in Watson and Lawrence back-to-back and riding that play forward.  His offenses have looked stagnant and slow for a couple years now and if that defense is showing some cracks they're in deep trouble. Feels like FSU is going to demolish them later on in the year unless they really figure this out.

Folks, if anyone had advice here it would be appreciated: how do I explain to my dog that while we don't celebrate Duke's victories, it's a more important thing for Dabo to lose and us to feel joy?

That Clemson QB slide has got to be the sweetest Schadenfreude moment ever!  I went from “f@€£, first down AND 15” to “doesn’t seem fair, but the PF happened a split second after change of possession so, yay!!!”

Knowing the rest of the world is waiting for us to stumble made watching those spoiled Dukies rush the field weirdly enjoyable!!

There's no way this should happen with the amount of blue chip recruits on Clemson. They must not be developing their players or are star chasing without doing due diligence. Duke looked like a legit football team that was just better than Clemson tonight.  They were like inches short of being a 10 win team last year.

If I were a blue chip recruit, I wouldn't go to Clemson until Dabo is gone or he gets better coordinators.

If "the Horror" did not put all power football schools on notice a decade and a half ago (still in therapy over it) -- then shame on them (and us).  The idea we (or they) can walk over schools like ECU, UNLV, Duke, etc is just the bulletin board material those opponents need to actually pull off the upset.

Respect all opponents then run the ball down their throats.

Go Blue.
