OT- Detroit Tigers Make a Decision
The wait is over. Two days before the trade deadline and the Tigers finally announce their plan for the remainder of the season.
They are officially sellers. They announced Price, Cespedes, Soria, and other soon to be free agents are available.
Story:
Here's to hoping we can get some good pieces for Price and Cespedes. It'll be interesting to see how this plays out.
Their value is higher now, with little time before the deadline. They may not have received as much last meek.

The Angels wanted Cespedes....but are no longer interested. His value has dropped as the demand is reducing across baseball...With Price, I would agree.
It's a good decision, but you can't really argue that waiting until so close to the deadline to even field offers maximizes their value. You always risk the number of sellers going up and the number of buyers dropping. Hopefully, it works out.
have mostly been talking while the sellers are feeling out the various offers.
My speculation is that the Tigers have something new and there is a limited time to act.
Other team's may say "your Price* is too high" and elect to do nothing.
.
*see what I did there?
It's like any scarce resource with a deadline. Sure, the value is higher as the supply has become more scarce, but there's also lower demand/fewer buyers, since many buyers wanted to make sure they got in before the deadline (thus countering that increase in value).
It's like entering the market on Christmas Eve at 11:00PM with a Tickle-Me-Elmo doll (20 years ago). Most parents either already got one, or spent all of their money getting the kids something else just a little less good.
Let's hope there's a buyer with enough left willing to pay that price (I'm guessing there is).
And we still find a way to make the playoffs

I'll have some of what you're smoking
Haha that seriously made me laugh because it would be so awesome. Like having your pizza and eating it too.
I will be marginally happy if some trades happen. I just don't see a major 10 game winning streak in this team over the next month. JV looked great today, but the previous 3 games were turds.
This has been a bad team since May. This could be an atrocious team during August and September. I'm supposed to see my first Tigers game at Comerica in late August. I might as well save some money and watch West Michigan play (definitely not the Mud Hens...they suck, too).
Does anyone think that they will try to unload VMart?
Sent from MGoBlog HD for iPhone & iPad
No.
And even if they did, it would be almost impossible with his contract unless the Tigers took a player with a worse contract.
Well thats what I was hoping to unload. His stats this year are not deserving of that contract and hes only getting older...sigh... We probably wouldnt have resigned him if we knew we were no longer contenders...sigh...

because he struggled in April and May, was hurt most of June.
Victor is hitting .307/.342/.533 with four homers and six doubles in the month of July, and he hasn't had the luxury of batting behind Miguel.
I'm not even close to giving up on V-Mart.
Vmart may not be earning his money on the field but by all accounts he is a great clubhouse guy and leader. He may be overpaid but for the time being he can contribute in other aspects of the game if not on the field.
he would still be a great piece to have. Obviously there was a big injury risk with him considering his age and history, and with him getting hurt the contract looks really bad. The first part of the season it was clear as day that his knee was a big issue when he hit left-handed, and since coming back from the DL he has hit better, but watching his lefty swing he still doesn't seem to be generating as much torque with his lower body as he did last year. Even when he is not productive at the plate at least he is a good veteran clubhouse guy, so he isn't completely worthless.
Farm guys, another big bat?
Young, solid SP. One of the hardest things to acquire in baseball. The Mets, Cardinals, Angels, A's, Royals, Pirates, and Dodgers have accomplished this.
If we could somehow get a future ace or #2 rotation pitcher out of this, I would call it a win. Also, young arms for the pen, and young guys to replace Miggy and V-Mart when they are gone.
Arms. Lots of them. Preferably ones that throw fire. You can go get bats in the offseason.
Prob not gonna resign him and his value is sky high. I could also see them moving Cespedes or Soria.
This is where DD proves his worth. We better get some good pieces for Price. Hopefully in the bullpen.
Seriously? You want to trade one of the best starting pitchers in the game for some middle relief help?

Football needs to get here. . . .now. . . .
They made the right choice. Buying with what little assets the farm system has left, not resigning Price, and then missing the playoffs on top of it would have been devasting.
Please let them send Price to the Cubs
The Cubs don't have the pitching prospects that the Tigers need, although I could certainly see Price ending up a Cub during the off-season.
If i was a gambling man, and i am, my money would be on the dodgers
Rajai, Soria and Simon should all be on the block.
As others have stated, this is the right move. I was starting to worry Dombrowski was going to stand-pat try to get a starter.
You might get half of a Whopper for Simon.
Every pending free agent this offseason should be on the block right now. And I'd also listen to offers for Kinsler. That contract is going to get bad soon, too.
should be kept for now. Just traded for him before the season and probably won't be able to recoup what was sent out to get him. He is serviceable for a number five starter but I think he would have the most value being in the bullpen.
Kinsler isn't getting any younger, but he is the type of player that I think every team needs a bunch of, and I don't think the Tigers have very many. If they can get a good return, Machado is there to fill in, but he doesn't seem to be anything special. Sure would be great if Devon Travis was around....
with bacon and some warm fries and a sip of Sprite.
contract actually declines with a club option at the end. Its not a bad deal at all.
It would be great if we somehow trade Price, Cespedes, Davis, Soria, Avila, Simon, and Greene and somehow still make the playoffs. Imagine if they just started Gose, McCann, and other young guys and started going crazy.

greene will get them a bag of balls
This isn't "Major League"
Dump Avila too
But for what/who?
The big league team doesn't need a complete rebuild, but there is a major need for some good prospects in the organization. Send out Price, Cespedes, Soria, and Davis and bring back a mix of solid, pretty much MLB-ready guys to help the team down the stretch (back end of the rotatiion starters, relievers) as well as some very high potential guys who are a couple years away still (top 3 starter/closer/of). The key being YOUNG guys, not taking on mediocre veterans.
Would like to see Soria and Cespedes brought back after this year as they have both been good here. Need to sign an ace and/or number two starter as well, but probably not going to be someone of Price's level. If Verlander and Sanchez can at least be decent next year and the team (MIggy and VMart) stays healthy, they should still be in the playoff picture going forward.
Oh, and a new manager. Ausmus is a good dude and seems like he would be a great assistant, but his managing has been mediocre at best. I can't recall a game where his strategy/decision making straight up won a game. In the late innings of games in particular he seems to make bad moves. He seems like one of those managers that fit better with a young and totally rebuilding team than one in World Series-or-bust mode.
I keep hearing talk of trading players (Cespedes in particular) and then re-signing them after the season. Does this ever happen? Seems like it would be a great deal for the selling team, but I can't recall it happening before.
Yes it does happen. Although not often.
Cespedes likes playing for the Tigers and would like to stay here, but also understandibly wants to test the Free Agent market so he can get a good deal. I don't put a ton of stock in players making comments like that, especially when it doesn't come directly from the player but rather through his reps to the media. Last year Jason Hammel was traded from the Cubs to the A's for their playoff push and then signed back with the Cubs.
That would be great if it happened.
3.32 era, 0.95 whip, 23 k, 2 bb, In 27.1 innings pitched.
People might want to stop writing him off. He hasn't been completely healthy in 3 years.
The return may not be as much as most think it will be because teams aren't willing to give up premium prospects for a two months rental. If Price has a couple years left, different story

any almost MLB ready top prospects, but should be able to get some solid players who can play at the MLB level the last part of the season and some highly thought of players who are several years away from the big leagues but have above-average potential. And if a few teams get in a bidding war, and there very well may be one for Price, there could be a very nice return.
Price is worth more.
Trade all the offseason free agents - Price, Cepedes, Soria - and bring in some youth. Then bring in a new Mananger. Brad seems like a good dude, but he just isn't cutting it.
for Price's suitors. If he can come to terms on a long-range deal with somebody, they should get a pretty good haul. Although this is the right call, I really hate to watch Cespedes go. His defense and arm alone were worth the price of admission most nights.
