OT- Detroit Tigers Make a Decision

Submitted by Steves_Wolverines on

The wait is over. Two days before the trade deadline and the Tigers finally announce their plan for the remainder of the season.

They are officially sellers. They announced Price, Cespedes, Soria, and other soon to be free agents are available.

Here's to hoping we can get some good pieces for Price and Cespedes. It'll be interesting to see how this plays out.

says that he has to be signed to an extension during this season, up until five days after the World Series, if not extended by that date then the team must release him. MLB rules state that a player released after the season cannot sign with the team that released him until mid-May of the following season. The Tigers don't really seem to do mid season extensions and Cespedes wants to test the free agent market, and obviously he would sign with a team and not wait until a couple of weeks after the start of next season just to sign back with Detroit. By trading him the Tigers don't have to deal with that clause.

If there is anyone that would resign or lockup a player longterm, it's Dombrowski. Cabrera, Verlander, Martinez, and Sanchez have all resigned lengthy deals with the Tigers. The only players he hasn't been able to willingly hold onto have been Max, who he did offer a seven year deal to prior to his last season.

This is a smart play and will hopefully reload the team with young talent.  There is enough on the roster to be able to contend in the next year or two with a reboot.

I hope that they replace Ausmus at the end of the season as well, and get a veteran manager who has leadership qualities.  Ausmus needs 4 years at least managing in the minors before he will be ready to return to MLB.

Like others, I was kind of beginning to worry that they would go out and try something brash like buy or worse, stand with what they had - that would have been the worst thing they could have done, in my opinion. Selling is definitely the right thing to do, although now they have to try to cobble something together in the next day and a half or so, most likely involving Price, I would think. Stranger things have happened in baseball, of course.

This is why I don't give a shit about baseball anymore. Can you imagine if the Tiges has traded away Trammel, Whitaker, Parrish, Rozema, Morris, etc. after 1983?

The player revolving door makes these groups not teams at all, just loose collections of free agents who have no vested interest in the team they happen to play for this month...just their next contract.

In 1983, Free Agency was still pretty much non-existent and teams colluded to make sure players didn't ever move.  Remember Parrish eventually won a major collusion lawsuit after he left in free-agency in the mid 80's.

You man not like free-agency, but players deserve to get what the market will pay them.  They shouldn't just be stuck on one team like indentured servents their entire career.  There are still ways to keep players long term (see Verlander and Cabrera) you just have to pay.

This team getting to a play in wild card game is no reason to stay the course. This team has zero chance to win the division, zero chance to move on in the playoffs, and right now doesn't have much of a future as free agency hits in 2015-16.

Get 3 pieces for Price, 2 for Cespedes, 2 for Soria, try to do something with Verlander's contract and then your talking about something you can work with probably in 2017.

It's also a matter of what this team has been for the previous 7 seasons (feeling pretty blessed actually). We're not fans of a team hoping for a shot in the playoffs. We have seen what it takes to win and no way does this team this year have it. It's title or bust, and chances of a title are way way higher next year if DD does this right (though still not that high). I think fans would be crazy not to be pumped about selling and retooling for 2016 and beyond.

The Tigers getting a wild-card isn't a bad scenario. Yeah, they've played pretty crappy since starting 11-2 and with the talent they have it isn't unrealistic for them to make the playoffs and play better baseball, get on a roll and compete. But, as I posted above, it's the thing to do in baseball. Hell, there's over 1/3rd of the season remaining. Baseball is hilarious.

have been absolutely woeful against teams outside their division.  They spend almost all of August playing the Royals and other contenders.  This team will  be 15+ back by September easily even if they kept Price and Cespedes.

Not moving them now means they would have the same core and absolutely zero prospects in the minors.  The big issue here is how decimated the Tigers farm system is.  I haven't looked recently but AAA, AA and high A were all in last place not that long ago.

Not moving players of value now would set the Tigers back for years.  Getting younger prospects with their core intact would give a chance at competeing while their core group is still pretty good.

Tony Paul seems rather optimistic with our options. If he's right, this is an easy decision for me. If we can bring back several top 100 prospects, including guys in the top 20-30 who are close to mlb ready, it would be an easy decision in my mind.

The bigger question is DD, to me. I'm a fan, even if he's lost a little luster.

Makes sense.  They'll get some nice offers (I assume) from teams in contention, and maybe they'll get a couple of players who can help them now plus refill part of the farm system.

Would have truly only made a difference in 2013, 1 meatball slider to Ortiz and the Tigers shot at a WS went kablooey.

They also had plenty of time to turn that series around after, but that 8th inning was the Red Sox only opening in what was a gem by Scherzer and Sanchez the game before.

Need more players under club control. This makes sense with the large backloaded deals they signed with Verlander, Miggy and V- Mart. Get some young talent that can be controlled for the life of Iglesias and J.D 's contracts
