OT: Controversial tweet by the Lions Aaron Berry

Submitted by MGoCooper on

This is why letting players on Twitter after a game is a bad idea. Clearly frustrated, he said something that he will never live down in this city.

Let alone being the best thing ever. There is simply no need for anyone to ever announce their thoughts instantaneously to the entire world. If something is that important there are a million other ways to communicate it in a way that allows at least a moment to reflect before sending.

How ridiculous. It's only because of the die-hard fans that have passion for sports that these players can make millions of dollars doing what they do. If fans didn't care enough, the players wouldn't make squat. What are they making all that money for if they can't catch a freaking ball or cover a receiver at all?? I could go out there and drop a pass - please pay me that money instead.

I a die hard fan as anybody. My point is that tweeting somebody in this manner is pointless. Why did these people do it? Are they frustrated? Probably, but there are better ways to handle frustration than attacking someone over social media. It accomplishes nothing. If want to relieive your frustration yell at your TV for a few minutes, I did, it was theraputic. I never thought to tweet Mr. Berry and tell him how bad he played. I am sure he knows and even if he doesn't it doesn't accomplish anything. You are just wasting your time (as I am doing writing this on a blog but whatever).

I may not know much...but have played and seen enough football to know that at the highest level if the ball hits your hands TWICE in the same game you should probably pick those passes off.

Other than that he is probably right.

As a professional athlete, you have to hold yourself to a higher standard. I don't defend fans for saying things that they say to athletes on twitter, but you can't say things like this. Because no matter what you might have wanted to say, it will always come off completely wrong. Once you hit send/tweet, you can't get it back.

I agree 100% he should have just ignored the morons. Not going to defend him one bit. It just amazes me how stupid fans are. It really shouldn't because I have played enough sports to know how stupid they are and how "all knowing" they can be. Of course I was lucky enough to play before all this social media crap. If they had something to say to me, it was to my face. Funny enough, not much was ever said.

The people in this country have gotten too comfortable with talking shit to and about celebrities and athletes and even kids. No one has any business tweeting terrible shit to any of these athletes and frankly for the things that are said to them I'm not sure if I could handle it either.

Yeah they should be held to a higher standard but fans need to back the fuck off and get a fucking life. I've had twitter since the beginning and I don't think I've ever tweeted a celebrity or athlete and certainly would never tweet them to roast them.

People need to learn that if you wouldn't say it to there face you shouldn't say it on social media either.

Being a dick to someone on Twitter is exactly like booing a player at the stadium. The fan thinks he can say whatever he wants, no matter how vile, because they are safe from reprisal. I don't see a lot of people booing NFL players on the street, for fear of getting their dick kicked in the dirt.

Players hear the booing (read the tweets) but generally don't respond, because they could give a fuck less about what someone who doesn't know the difference between quarters and cover 2 thinks, and because they are rich and famous. But occasionally, a player freaks out. Rodman kicks a cameraman in the dick (lot of that going on in this post), Barkley spits, Artest punches. And we are all shocked when stuff like this happens.

Berry has just pulled a digital-age-Brian Cox and given the middle finger to the booers. Not a huge deal. But he is a shitty player.

College athletes should be held to a higher standard bc they represent an institution first and foremost. But why should the pros hold themselves to a higher standard. The teams want them to win a championship and make ownership money. The players are there to get paid and play the game they love. These players don't have to be role models to your kids or your favorite player. You should be your kids role model...

And I am sure some of these fans who are appalled are Jackasses themselves at their work from time to time. Just chill people

CUT. HIS. ASS.

I was saying all game long while witnessing his truly pitiful performance. This idiotic PR blunder probably assures his fate with the team.

Let's see how long the line is to pick up this guy once he's on the market. Aaron's about to be as broke as the people he's talking down to after that embarrassment. He looked like a high school player on an NFL field tonight.

You cnat give assholes a forum to harass you then complain when assholes harass you. Does any NFL player really think that NFL fans will reign constant praise upon them despite their poor play/ off the field behavior?

There is one fool proof method to not be harassed on Twitter; don't open a twitter account.

I'm with you Blake, mostly because I can't resist that look.

I really do agree with your sentiment though. Pretty classless to be sending hateful messages to a guy for dropping the ball a couple times. If you want to rip on him on a radio show or on a blog such as this, such is your right, but no one deserves that kind of harassment. Don't stoop to buckeye behavior Detroit.

the lions and team 132 are the same on defense. we know the front 4 are good but to me atleast it seems like they have been underachieving. the linebackers have good play but are out of position on a couple key plays. a couple question marks throughout the season. and the secondary has one good safety (delmas/kovacs) and then guys that can make plays yet they can be atrocious at the same time. atleast we have a slightly easier fix. i think we can have like 31 more ppl on scholarship than the lions have on the team. and a fresh crop of 18-27 people a year. i am a die hard lions and m fan and am happy the wolverines can fix these woes within 2 years whereas the lions may take a year of free agency/draft or 5+ years depending on how personell decisions work out. whats that? he was projected as a top 10 pick? and he plays wide receiver? well we'd be stupid not to pick him up in the mid/late first round when we have dire needs elsewhere......

They remind me more of Michigan state. They've sucked forever but in two years think that decent seasons have earned them the respect of the universe. They play overrated defense that's dirty and far from reliable. Their coach is a hot shot dick. Quarterback always has one last pick in him. Pretty much the same team. Oh yeah , also they'll never win because all they care about is proving they're not losers. Go pack (Woodson) , go steelers (woodley), go 49ers ( harbaugh) go ravens ( harbaugh) .....

It seems to me that tweeting when frustrated or upset is generally a recipe for a PR catastrophe even if you're not someone of Berry's relative stature and even if nobody saw your performance on national TV. Whether it's a close circle of friends or an entire fanbase, it's not a good idea - 140 characters is not enough space to provide context for such statements, so if you were being sarcastic, ironic, or whatever, it probably didn't come through.

The problem now is that whatever he did in that game now almost doesn't matter - it is here on this blog, it has likely been retweeted all over the place, and very rarely do retractions or apologies get retweeted quite like the initial statement. Whatever thinking Berry did in the interim will not be heard by most, and that's unfortunate for him. Personally, I would imagine he was responding to criticisms of his on-field performance (and there are valid criticisms of his performance in that game, yes), but if you're a pro athlete, it is probably wise never to respond directly to such things, at least immediately after the performance in question.

I wonder what the organization does about it now? Other than have him issue some sort of apology (other than the short one on Twitter now), it doesn't seem like there is much to do. Thanks to Twitter, people can now shoot themselves in the foot and bleed all over the world.

Jim Rome is gonna be all over that tomorrow. Like he has always said, "athletes should never go to 'I am rich and you are not' card." Now that player will get even more hatred.

If he starts playing better next year, nobody will give a shit about the tweet. But it is a great distraction and gives angry fans someone at whom to direct their anger over the loss. The Lions aren't the first team to have trouble with the Saints, who averaged 34.2 a game during the regular season this year. 45 is a good game, but nothing they haven't done before.

All in all, on a scale of one to ten, this is a one that got temporarily elevated to relevance by angry fans.

Who knows what he's been putting up with lately. Everyone has their breaking point. He probably would rather have dealt with the situation face to face. No big deal.

He didn't have a good game. I'm already over it. He's going to relive those couple of plays, over and over in his mind. I feel bad for him in that respect.

Everybody needs to let it go!

Berry had to know going on twitter after that game he was not going to find a lot of positive comments. If he didn't think there wouldn't be any ass clown comments then he is either stupid or delusional. To me it seems like he was actually looking for a fight just by getting on and reading the comments and then he must have read enough of them to upset him so much. Probably after the first couple he should have gotten the picture but it seems he read quite a few. This guy doesn't deserve a pass and if a bunch of tweets from random idiots affects him so bad he needs to get off twitter and get his mental game stronger.

Indignation over things like this puzzle me. The only legit reason to be offended is if he is directing it at you, and if that's the case, you probably deserve it for being an internet tough guy on Twitter. Otherwise, you're just projecting your frustration on Berry as a scapegoat.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say you aren't a Lions fan. Yet you took the time to post this inflammatory rhetoric about the pro football team that most of the people on this blog most likely support and then compared that team to one of the chief rivals of UM in a thread about the Lions. How troll-ey of you.
