OT: The Brow becomes richest player in NBA at 5 years/145 mill

Well damn. These numbers are going to be insane over the next 2 years when the NBA gets a new TV deal...

Each team will have a salary cap around 90-100 mill in 2-3 years I believe?

I wonder if the cap increase will encourage parity amongst small and big markets or super teams in solely big markets...

NBA is basically reality TV these days. I loved the NBA in my younger days (Bird/Magic/Jordan years), but it's getting ridiculous these days. Free agency and player movement makes it hard to like teams unless you're geographically tied to a team. You basically have to root for individual players and follow them from team to team.

I used to think like that (I hate it when big Euro soccer clubs win over and over again) until I realized that the outcomes aren't that different with a salary cap in America either. The same teams will always win the championships with a few exceptions here n there.

The argument based on parity is not a strong one imo.

So... in that case...

I'm all for player autonomy in sports. Teams screw players over all the time. It's about time American sports catch up to Euro soccer when it comes to player power vs club power.

You either root for players or pick a team and be dedicated to it regardless of the players playing for it. Better hope your team's owner wants a championship team year in and out rather than sitting back and not caring.

They might wanna start selling more blank team jerseys in America like they do for soccer haha.

days in professional sports. I guess you might find some examples in football with the injuries but I'll happily bend over daily for my screwing for half of the $145 million. It's ridiculous to even mention getting screwed when you are talking this type of money.

Even if it weren't his nickname, it isn't like it is a horrible deformity. All he needs is a razor or some tweezers for people not to make fun of it. That would be like saying you are morally against making fun of someone because they have a mullet. If you'll come down off that high horse you're on, I'll tell you how fucking ridiculous that is

Anthony Davis is trending towards becoming the most dominant big man in NBA history, and we will be blessed if 'Dre tops out as a Dwight Howard doppleganger.

So we probably won't have to worry about Drummond making $30 million a year anytime soon, unless he makes some shrewd moves in the stock market.  He's a smart kid - I wouldn't put that past him.

I think you'll be surprised... we got mediocre players like Afflalo making 30-40 mill on 3 year deals out here... lol...

Not to mention people tossing out max or pseudo max contracts left and right to players like Bledsoe and Gordon (last year) or Butler and Brook Lopez (this year)....

A no brainer move for the Pelicans. And I am happy for Davis; I think things are looking up for his career (beyond the $tack$) with Gentry now at the helm. This could mean that New Orleans becomes a FA destination once the Pelis get their cap straightened out after next year. Its not the biggest market (whatever that even means these days) but NOLA is cool as hell, so why not live there for the winter months?

I think the salary cap for this past season was something like $63.065 million and they are projecting $67.1 or something in that rang for the coming season, which would be higher than the figure I heard even last month.

Assuming a constant rate of growth based on the projected jump of around 6% (which doesn't really characterize the cap calculation, but we'll assume for a second), you probably could easily be in the $90 million range in five years. I bet it ends up a bit short of that, but I could be wrong.

Totally forgot about the TV deal, so yeah, the revised projection per ESPN was indeed as follows:

$67.1 million in 2015-16

$89 million in 2016-17

$108 million in 2017-18

It looks as if the bulk of the TV bump comes up front (they even discussed lump sums to free agents, I think) and then the cap will fall a bit in subsequent years, at least it looks that way now.

Good catch.

It is less about roster size, number of games, etc. than it is about splitting the revenue between players and owners. I'd guess the split is about the same in both sports. So lower level NBA players benefit from smaller rosters relative to low level NFL guys.

I think the NBA should do away with the salary cap and offer the players as much as they want...the caveat: guaranteed contracts. No more sign and sit deals.

It's actually refreshing to see one of top 5 guys properly valued during his prime. The problem with NBA contracts historically is that stars tend to be underpaid until they get off their rookie extensions at age 27-30 and sign a long term max deal they're rarely worth by the end.

I'm pretty sure if an all player draft were held with the goal being long term success, not 1 year to win, Davis would be the run away 1st choice for every team.

This is gonna look like an absolute steal in 3 years. He would have earned a lot more by signing a 1 or 2-year deal and taking the much higher salary cap soon. Having him leave money on the table like that will help the Pelicans immensely in a few years.
