Deshaun Watson has reached a settlement with the NFL and will serve an 11-game suspension and pay a $5 million fine rather than risk missing his first season as quarterback of the Cleveland Browns, a person familiar with the situation told The Associated Press.

My initial thought is that a middle-ground agreement has been reached and NO ONE will be happy on either side. Let the discussion begin...

Appears the 11 games bears significance for Watson:

Eligible to return week 13. Against the Texans.

That wasn’t an accident. 11 games wasn’t some arbitrary number they decided on.

Say what you will about the NFL, but they find ways to create storylines with absolutely everything they do. As we get into the second half of the season, all the talking heads will be talking about for weeks is Deshaun stepping back out onto the field for the first time. Against his old team. On the road.

You can’t make this stuff up.

You're right, the 11 games is not arbitrary. Howeva, sounds like this will leave him with 6 games on the season remaining allowing him to qualify for a full season which will then affect his salary next year (positively for him). The fact that his return falls against the Texans is just icing on the cake for the league. Sometimes a coincidence is just a coincidence

Edit: to which I'll add from the great Sigmund Freud: "sometimes, a cigar is just a cigar..."

The line between criminal and civil has always mystified me.  You can sue someone in court for doing something illegal (murder, etc.) and get a settlement, but that defendant can avoid dealing with the legal aspects.

In this case, I am happy that each plaintiff received a payout.  However, future Deshauns are seeing that you can buy your way out of trouble.

I am not a lawyer. And 1) being sued and settling out of court is dealing with that legal aspect. 2) my understanding is there is a higher burden of proof in criminal cases, so instead of "beyond a reasonable doubt" in a criminal case, the burden is "a preponderance of the evidence"- so more likely than not- in a civil case

Yes and. Have to consider it in the context of the statistics tho. According to https://www.rainn.org/statistics/criminal-justice-system, only ~30% of sexual assaults are reported to police, 1 in 6 of those reports result in arrest, and about half of those result in felony convictions and incarcerations.

Which given those odds and taken with the whole having to lay bare and re-live your trauma through depositions and testifying in public, I'd be darn skeptical about taking that route, and if it were easier to take his money and not have to wade through the above, not sure I would describe that as feeling dirty for not talking to the cops, money or no money (which isn't to say those victims didn't talk/haven't already talked to the cops- I haven't followed the cases closely enough to know the details)

I was actually starting to like the Browns after moving to the area a couple years back.

Now I can go back to hating them and their ownership.

After looking at the Browns sbnation site I got the impression there are lots of fans willing to look the other way and cheer on the team anyway.  Now, if Watson starts playing shitty like he did in that preseason game, there will be buyers remorse.

My favorite part of the Browns' hypocrisy here is swearing up and down about his innocence, but letting everyone know they put together a specialized massage plan with approved therapists for him so he doesn't rape anymore.  If he really is innocent, you shouldn't need to go out of your way to make sure he doesn't rape any of your employees.

On the same note, he makes a statement/non-apology where he maintains his innocence, but then the Browns speak on and on about how he deserves a second chance, everyone makes mistakes, and that they've already seen a lot of growth from him. But if he's innocent, what does he need a second chance for? What growth is there to be done? To make it worse, the Browns basically rewarded him with the most guaranteed money ever. Complete BS and shows how much money talks (by hushing most of the lawsuits).

What happens with the $5 million?  Into the NFL's coffers or put toward something useful?  It's bullshit if they profit off of a player's misconduct (criminal or otherwise).

According to Roger Goodell's statement  https://twitter.com/CharlesRobinson/status/1560303013272895488/photo/1 the $5 million fine plus a million each from the NFL and the Browns will "support the work of non-profit organizations that educate young people on healthy relationships, promote education and prevention of sexual misconduct and assault, support survivors, and related causes." So sounds like it will be put to good use and not for profit.

I’ve always considered myself a Browns fan, even though I prefer CFB. Once they made this trade (regardless of suspensions, etc.), I cannot in good faith support them. Lions it is

At least it's finally resolved, at least until his next transgression.

But it will be interesting to see if he can drag a 5-6 or 6-5 Browns team to the playoffs. The NFL sure does good drama.

It's not over yet, he still has to through third party behavior evaluations and counseling. He has yet to admit guilt or show remorse. If he doesn't complete it successfully it will be a longer suspension.

I know you don't listen to the podcast, but "silver-haired, middle-aged white man" is a turn of phrase the two hosts use to refer to any owner that will keep a player or coach until he's essentially forced to release the player. They don't actually care at all about the transgressions, just performance.

It's funny how it's almost always a "mid-20's African-American" in these situations and the women are typically white with these civil outcomes. It has nothing do to with race, but there sure as hell some pretty strong patterns.

1) Look at the demographics of people with the pitchforks out versus the ones that are thinking " not so fast my friend"

2) Look at the response and the vitriol between this and Big Ben and even Peyton. I know, those were a million years ago and things were different back then. Okay, Robert Kraft got busted before he busted during his massage. I know, it's different because he didn't have 60 women come forward. I bet you dollars to donuts that wasn't his first rub n tug.

Shit, there's dan snyder who had to testify before congress about the sexual happenings with the redskins organization.

2a) For those that didn't click the link, Peyton Manning was accused of putting his testicles and anus on the athletic trainer's face. He claimed that he mooned her. She reported it to the school. UT told her to blame it on a Black player. During the deposition, it came out that Peyton told Archie that the victim “was unattractive but had big breasts” and that she liked to hang out “with a bunch of black guys.”

2b) Ben Roethlisberger raped a woman in a bathroom. His bodyguards would not let her friends come in to rescue her. The Milledgeville cops did everything they could to protect ben the rapist and even took pics with him. Goodell reduced his suspension from 6 game to 4. No fine. There was so much more evidence and concrete facts with ben than Deshaun.

3) The grand jury declined to indict the guy twice. You know how easy it is to indict with a grand jury? Only the prosecution brings evidence forward. They can indict a fucking ham sandwich in a grand jury.

4) Let's look at more facts. This is a bit old, but it's a study from the DoJ. 1.2% of rape cases involved white suspects and black victims. 45% Black men on Black women and 26% Black men on white women. The punishments were twice as harsh and long for cases with black male suspects and white women.

5) History. There's an insanely long history of false rape claims by white women on black men. Groveland Four, Pervis Payne, Hell, Amy Cooper was caught on camera telling the black birdwatcher that the cops are going to believe her because she's white. Terrell Owens dealt with a karen last week and she flat out said, "you're a black man approaching a white woman." in front of the cop.

6) The cost to defend. People settle because the legal process is extremely expensive and one sided. There are more than a few black people that end up pleaing guilty to move on despite being innocent

7) KOBE

It has nothing to do with race, but I can absolutely guess what yours is based on your response and sentiments.

Cleveland deserves worse for even hiring him in the first place. Either their due diligence was piss-poor or they just didn't give a shit.
