OSU week prep

Submitted by Maize in Cincy on November 29th, 2018 at 7:06 AM

I was told last night from a family member of a player that last week the staff had the players run more than any other week of prep during season.  Can anyone else confirm this?

That is interesting if true. We did look lethargic and a step slower in that game. No way all the other teams like Purdue are faster than us. We may have been exhausted and maybe didn’t get the rest necessary but that doesn’t take away from the bad playcalling on offense and failure to adjust on defense.

But it would explain why so many times a Michigan defender was a step behind the OSU players resulting in them not having any chance of breaking up the pass or making a tackle. At that point, it really minimizes the adjustments we make on defense with us primarily being man 2 man

Seems like a very Bo thing to do.  The amount of running that Bo had his teams do leading up to big games, especially the Rose bowl, was talked about by players for years.  They were always exhausted and sluggish.  It seems stupid to hire a strength coach who employs the latest methods, then have players run “ because that’s what Bo did.”

Harbaugh is our guy, but he needs to be more concerned with gashing our opponents than honoring Bo and carrying on traditions that worked generations ago.

Totally agree. Harbaugh is trying so hard to be Bo. I get that was his coach and one of his idols, but enough is enough.

There’s nothing wrong with conditioning throughout the week, but if they ran as much as you say they did, then that’s a problem.

Certainly not why they lost, but they did look exhausted early in the game.

We have no idea if this is accurate or not.  And maybe he was running their ass because they played like shit against Indiana and, in life, lapses have consequences.  Or maybe this one particular player got his ass ran because of disciplinary reasons.  And maybe they are 17 and 18 years old and can run a shit load on Tuesday and Wednesday and certainly not have any lingering effects by Saturday.

Calling BS on this one.

I’m skeptical this report isn’t malarkey, but if it’s true, Herbert is an idiot and merits dismissal.

Of all weeks to make sure your guys have the freshest legs possible at game time, OSU is it.

Let me get this straight, HARBAUGH runs them too much, has 4 hour practices, & has them hit too much, so you want to fire Herbert? Is it that the two names both starting with H confuses you?

This board always Jokes that if a big power cheats Furman or somebody better watch out as the NCAA will make them pay, but this is what the Mgo witch hunters do every fucking time, pick an assistant to scapegoat and burn at the stake for Harhbaugh's misdeeds and failings when you have no idea what the assistants do or don't do nor what they are or are not ALLOWED to do over Harbaugh's orders.

Do you think it was Tolbert that had them doing Olympic circuit training (running) when they were supposed to be lifting with Tolbert? But who got fired because players weren't strong enough? There's a similar story with another departed coach about a different problem.

The assistants don't need your help being scapegoated for Harbaugh's doings, someone seems to be in charge of that already.

Jesus...if they were dumb enough to wear out the players prior to this game, then they deserved the L

Players kept going down and the DL had 0 push... it almost makes it worse if it was largely self-inflicted... to be so stupid

This sounds like nonsense. Even high school track coaches know how to properly peak as the season goes while keeping overall conditioning up.

The only thing I could see is IU did seem to throw michigan off with their tempo so did DB practice that a lot having the scout team run a lot of tempo? That could make sense and could be misconstrued as "we ran more than we ever did".

At the end of the day the team was gassed at IU and had at least 11 plays where the d line was not set or hunched over when osu snapped the ball. Is simply the consequence of the defense being on the sideline most games and not going against much tempo this year? Maybe. But i foresee a lot of teams pushing tempo against this UM team next year.

Aren't there a shitload of things we've all seen over 4 years that plenty of high school coaches know better than to do? Do I really need to list them? Can't you think of a bunch of unfathomable choices and decisions yourself?

How many high school coaches have you seen run out the clock on themselves as much as humanly possible as if they are trying to close out a lead when in fact they are desperately behind with barely enough time to score enough points if they scored as fast as possible on each possession? Just one of many head scratchers from the head man.

Shit like this comes out all the time. It’s a game of telephone. Probably some player was pissed that he did something wrong and they made him run and it transformed through 4 messengers into the coaches ran everyone into the ground. There’s no way that happened. The coaches have been around for a long time. They’re not that dumb.

Just stop.   You really think Harbaugh is going against his strength coaches wishes and running guys because that's what Bo did?    Come on man.

People acting like they care more about this game than Harbaugh is just incredible.

What evidence is ever offered or demanded when any of you are speculating about what assistants are responsible for and doing wrong and blaming them or wanting them gone? Every time I know something specific from a players mouth you guys are wrong.

I haven't been around players this season almost at all, and haven't been in a situation where such talk could happen the few times I did see guys so I don't know anything specific to this year or The Game, but very specific and definitive stories about overworking and over running prior to this season, specifically about one of the bowl games but also in general.

The first I remember this coming up was in response to talk about motivation or effort in some game or situation, how it looked to me watching the game. It was hard to believe some of the stuff but look how many times we've come out and looked flat and slow, put everything in context, these stories, what we now know about Durkin, all the injuries in the first 3 years, Zordich always harping on the differences between being injured or hurt and calling out guys for not playing and practicing through pain.

Think of how often there are stories of extreme or abusive training of athletes in college sports. Everyone preaches maximum intensity, effort and hard work, going beyond what you think you can do, fighting through the pain, toughness, out working and out competing everyone else etc. etc. It's the culture. The pressure to compete and win, just to survive, is great on the coaches. It's not surprising that things go overboard.

I mean the training and practice and demands of the coaches, and the coaches themselves are extreme and intense as fuck in the women's sports at Michigan according to the players I've known over the years, and those are non revenue sports!

This isn't proof but it seems consistent with how things could go if it were true.

Vague statement leading to weird speculation.

OTOH I would be interested in learning some first-person information on what it was like playing there.  How do they prep players for that insane atmosphere?

Only 1 player looked slow to me, and 1 player couldn't catch, and 5 players couldn't rush the QB, and 2 coaches were slow to adjust, so yeah maybe they ran too hard last week.

You're right, Fuckeyes kept striking and Harbaugh kept failing to counterstrike. You have identified the problem. Maybe he got confused with the multiple meanings of the word. They kept striking so Harbaugh tried to keep up by having his offense go on strike....

Several of the times Michigan defenders were getting beat on the crosses was because tOSU were setting picks, and using the umpire as a screen--the receiver would run and break right in front of the umpire, forcing the defender to go around him to get to the receiver.
