OSU paid for Evan Turner's braces

Submitted by FabFiver5 on

Looks like there's a slush fund for all NCAA Div. I schools to be able to pay for random student-athlete expenses, whether it be for braces or hotel rooms for family members affected by natural disaster.

Make of it what you wish, but I'd be interested to see how we spent our money over the past few years.

They usually reserve that fund for the important things.  Y'know, buckeye tattoos, SUV's, heroin, and the select female student population known affectionately as O-hi-HO's.

Strange. Not sure how I feel about that. Why would a university pay for an athlete's braces, but not a normal student's? I don't have a problem with it, I'm just confused as to why that's available for some students and not others.

True. I love the fact that the school can provide insurance in case of injury, especially since the players are putting their bodies at risk for their benefit.

It sounds like this was "extra" money outside of normal insurance though, which is why I'm wondering. If the money is there, I have no problem with them using it to do this, just curious why the athletes are given preference on it.

Yep.  I think something besides a useless degree in Sports Com. and basic insurance isn't too much to ask for.  hen agan, I generally believe athletes from revenue generating sports should be paid by boosters or recieve extra stipends from the university or be allowed to exploit their marketability.

I wouldn't be surprised that tuOSU share was the largest of the Big Ten schools...those greedy f%$#nuts got more than 1/11th of $3.6 million...$516K doesn't seem fair but then again its tuOSU so no big surprise there....maybe they paid for Pryor's corvette too...

I have zero problem with this...

A student can apply for up to $500 per academic year to pay for clothing, travel expenses from campus to home, expendable academic course supplies up to $40, rental costs for certain course-related equipment, medical and dental costs not covered by another insurance program and costs linked to a family emergency.

Back in the summer of '04 (I believe) I actually helped Coach Andy Moeller and the "evil" Brad Labadie buy clothes at Briarwood for Jake Long, Prescott Burgess, Garett Rivas, et. al. when their house burned to the ground.  It was self-reported and the bulk of the money spent was reimbursed from this fund.  Like the article quotes...this is a good rule.

1. As was mentioned, braces are not always cosmetic. Malocclusion and misalignment can lead to future dental problems if not corrected. (gingivitis, periodontitis, caries, etc)

2. Braces are generally not covered by dental insurance and if the insurance does cover it, the braces will rarely be fully covered. If the school has a dental school (OSU & UM included) most dental care is at cost or covered. Being at a private school with a dental school now, all of our undergrads have dental coverage. We have to pay at least some of the lab fees.

So while this sounds like more of OMG OSU is paying players, it's really not a bad thing. I'd rather a school spend money on braces (opens doors for employment outside of football) than boats and hoes.
