OSU paid for Evan Turner's braces
Looks like there's a slush fund for all NCAA Div. I schools to be able to pay for random student-athlete expenses, whether it be for braces or hotel rooms for family members affected by natural disaster.
Make of it what you wish, but I'd be interested to see how we spent our money over the past few years.

They usually reserve that fund for the important things. Y'know, buckeye tattoos, SUV's, heroin, and the select female student population known affectionately as O-hi-HO's.

players heroin? Do you know how much you need to spend on coke for the O-line afterwards?
OSU only covers players' meth. Makes them fast, energetic, and angry. Perfect for football.

With no teeth, the team will no longer need mouthguards. A penny saved...

...or in this case, braces
December 6th, 2010 at 2:17 PM ^
Strange. Not sure how I feel about that. Why would a university pay for an athlete's braces, but not a normal student's? I don't have a problem with it, I'm just confused as to why that's available for some students and not others.
December 6th, 2010 at 2:19 PM ^
If a normal student got sick they would be on their own (or have to pay for insurance) but an athlete would get top notch medical coverage.
As long as these "braces" didn't consist of platinum and diamonds, I'm totally fine with OSU helping the kid fix his grill.

True. I love the fact that the school can provide insurance in case of injury, especially since the players are putting their bodies at risk for their benefit.
It sounds like this was "extra" money outside of normal insurance though, which is why I'm wondering. If the money is there, I have no problem with them using it to do this, just curious why the athletes are given preference on it.

"just curious why the athletes are given preference on it."
"since the players are putting their bodies at risk for their benefit."
Yep. I think something besides a useless degree in Sports Com. and basic insurance isn't too much to ask for. hen agan, I generally believe athletes from revenue generating sports should be paid by boosters or recieve extra stipends from the university or be allowed to exploit their marketability.

... to you, sir, for using the word "grill!"

i'm definitely against covering cosmetic items. what's next implants for the women's volleyball team? i'm speaking of tooth implants of course.
December 8th, 2010 at 12:03 AM ^
Braces aren't always simply cosmetic.
December 6th, 2010 at 4:32 PM ^
Looks like OSU has some explaining to do. Here's a shot of Turner's "braces."
December 6th, 2010 at 5:53 PM ^
And why, why would anyone do that?
December 6th, 2010 at 2:20 PM ^
that the fan base has for its players.
'Oh, they're so talented'... 'oh, they have so many buckeye stickers'... 'Oh, they have all of their shiny teef.'
December 6th, 2010 at 2:20 PM ^
No big deal. I hope he likes his teeth now.
December 6th, 2010 at 2:21 PM ^
It's ok as long as Evan didn't know that OSU paid for them.
December 6th, 2010 at 2:21 PM ^
hmmph,
must've been important.. that is if they were willing to dip into the fund they use to pay student athletes..
December 6th, 2010 at 2:22 PM ^
Ohhhh, so now we know where the money for Maurice Clarett's Chevy Monte Carlo came from.
December 6th, 2010 at 2:25 PM ^
How's he gonna get an A in "Intro to Thuggin' Outta Control" without it? It's an academic expense!
December 6th, 2010 at 2:36 PM ^
I love that hiding behind the automatic rifle, the handgun, and the Grey Goose is a lint roller. Gotta look good, even while ridin' dirty.

I wouldn't be surprised that tuOSU share was the largest of the Big Ten schools...those greedy f%$#nuts got more than 1/11th of $3.6 million...$516K doesn't seem fair but then again its tuOSU so no big surprise there....maybe they paid for Pryor's corvette too...
December 6th, 2010 at 3:26 PM ^
this is gonna sound bad, but im being serious. Lets get D Mo some invisalign for his bottom teeth
December 6th, 2010 at 3:49 PM ^
If there's no rule against it...
December 6th, 2010 at 3:56 PM ^
I have zero problem with this...
A student can apply for up to $500 per academic year to pay for clothing, travel expenses from campus to home, expendable academic course supplies up to $40, rental costs for certain course-related equipment, medical and dental costs not covered by another insurance program and costs linked to a family emergency.
Back in the summer of '04 (I believe) I actually helped Coach Andy Moeller and the "evil" Brad Labadie buy clothes at Briarwood for Jake Long, Prescott Burgess, Garett Rivas, et. al. when their house burned to the ground. It was self-reported and the bulk of the money spent was reimbursed from this fund. Like the article quotes...this is a good rule.
December 6th, 2010 at 5:59 PM ^
Thats probably not all what they payed for.
December 6th, 2010 at 9:47 PM ^
i remember hearing about some OSU players hosues getting robbed, and they said rolexes and x box's and other very very high valued things were stolen
isn't their a page that details all the crimes that osu players were arrested for, and other disgressions !
December 8th, 2010 at 1:20 AM ^
I find it odd that our military doesn't have ortho coverage.
December 8th, 2010 at 2:41 PM ^
1. As was mentioned, braces are not always cosmetic. Malocclusion and misalignment can lead to future dental problems if not corrected. (gingivitis, periodontitis, caries, etc)
2. Braces are generally not covered by dental insurance and if the insurance does cover it, the braces will rarely be fully covered. If the school has a dental school (OSU & UM included) most dental care is at cost or covered. Being at a private school with a dental school now, all of our undergrads have dental coverage. We have to pay at least some of the lab fees.
So while this sounds like more of OMG OSU is paying players, it's really not a bad thing. I'd rather a school spend money on braces (opens doors for employment outside of football) than boats and hoes.
