Oregon TE Grant McCormick granted 9th year of eligibility

He's completed his master's degree and played with no fewer than 377 teammates. McCormick is currently finishing his seventh year after missing 2018-2021seasons due to rhabdomyolysis, multiple ankle surgeries, and a torn Achilles.

Unsurprisingly he's the winner of this year's Orange Bowl-Football Writers of America Association's Courage award. He hasn't yet decided on returning next season (which would be his eighth, but at this point, and with NIL, why the hell not?! Get that Oregon Ph.D. too, young man. You've already earned one from the school of hard knocks.

The NCAA really should just get rid of most eligibility requirements. If they're full-time students (and I've been wondering how All and McNamara are going to class), then let them play. In theory it could have been abusive in the old world, but the combination of NIL money and the loose transfer rules means these guys can make decent money above the table by playing the game. Just let them. The Chris Hintons of the world could benefit, but there's no reason to draw a line elsewhere either. If Tom Brady wants to go back to Michigan in 2024, let him.Maybe you limit how long he can get an athletic scholarship, but otherwise who cares?

Interesting theoretical, and I think might work in an ideal world.  But in practical world it probably actually would ruin college sports.

  1. Without salary cap or floor, some crazy handful of schools are going to pay some pros a ton of money to come back and play - probably easier in Basketball
  2. Enforcement/equality of "full time student" could be pretty crazy - iirc with the UNC scandal they got off easy because the classes they offered were real (available for every student), but low difficulty classes.

Maybe if you just tack on the same "never played pro in that sport" rule that I think already exists, that would help.

I just did some detective work. Cam McCormick received an offer from Oregon on December 20, 2014, which would have been his junior year of high school. Assuming he took a campus visit around then as well - and, hypothetically, met a young lady and consummated their relationship during the visit - he could have a 7-and-a-half year old kid running around campus right now. If he used his full eligibility, the kid would be almost ten before he was done playing.

Cam McCormick has played for four Oregon head coaches during three different presidential administrations.

Redshirted under Mark Helfrich (when Brady Hoke was DC and Obama was still president), played under Willie Taggart, outlasted the entire Cristobal Era, now playing for Lanning.

Will he eventually play in the Big 10?
