One More Reason to be a D.J. Durkin Fan - He told Urban Meyer No @ OSU

Submitted by alum96 on

Lost in the OMG HARBAUGH "CAN'T GET" HIS TOP GUYS hysteria created by the media, it looks like Urban "could not" either.

An interesting blurb here on why we should love D.J. Durkin a 'lil bit more.  Urban reportedly offered Durkin a job at OSU when he was hired in 2011.  And Durkin said no.

Urban can't close on Durkin.

Meyer asked to be relieved from working as a studio analyst for ESPN this weekend and did not return multiple phone calls from ESPN.com over the last few days. A person familiar with the situation said Meyer has already offered two of his former assistants -- Florida linebackers coach/special teams coordinator D.J. Durkin and strength and conditioning coordinator Mickey Marotti -- a chance to join his staff at Ohio State.

Female dancing with exposed knees and neck/chest area.

NSFW. Have some respect for these poor guys who are just trying to not do work at work and their bosses will see...

(or have some respect for women coworkers that may feel uncomfortable... or the virgin eyes of the children that will see... or the girlfriends/wives that may be enraged...)

Haha! Suck it, Urban! You may be preparing for the national championship next week, but we've got a guy you wanted to employ a few years ago!

I guess it would be important to note what position he was offered. Was he offered DC or just a positions job? Obviously, he's not going to leave a DC position at Florida for a LB job at OSU.

Doesn't matter - he is Urban Meyer, he should get whomever he wants.  And if he doesn't its a failure - per current internet message board/twitter/NCAA reporters ethos.

Technically if Durkin is a co-DC he is going to a LESSER job to coach for Harbaugh, or most likely a parallel job.

What? Durkin was at Bowling Green when Urban took over at Florida. He didnt arrive on the Florida staff until Urban's last year and was retained by Muschamp.

While technically true (turning down Meyer @ OSU), he did say yes to Meyer twice before, as a GA at Bowling Green and then joining him at UF in Urban's final year there (Muschamp held on to Durkin after Meyer left, not Meyer holding on to Durkin after Zook left).  Clearly though, he's wisened with age.

Meyer had already hired him at Bowling Green and at Florida, so its not Urban he said no to, it was C'bus. Crazy how fast he's progressed as a coach. Graduate Assistant under DC Greg Mattison at ND, eventually steps into Mattisons shoes as DC at Florida, DC or Co-DC with Mattison at Michigan.

Meyer coaches the hated enemy, he and the buckeyes have caused pundit opinion to swing in favour of bgtn.   Wisconsin, MSU, PSU have all done their part to change minds about the strength of the conference.  But beating bama convincingly has really shut down criticism of the league.  This really paves the way for Harbaugh and a Michigan resurgence.  Beat sparty, beat bucky (and you only have to play them once), win the bgtn conference and you are in the NC tourney.

Also interesting is the AP poll-the writers/pundits had the 2 southern team's bama and FSU at 1 & 2.  How ironic that when they have to play somebody to earn a place in the NC title game it's a different picture than when pundits voted for teams.

Well I think you are overstating it a bit on your first point - 3 bowl games doesnt change 10 years of serial disappointment for the conf.  It speaks to recency bias.  Its the same Big 10 that lost to LSU Oregon and Va Tech 3 months ago.  And lost to 3 MAC teams.  Going to take a lot more work.

It does at least make then question saying SEC this that or the other constantly.  The BIg 10 is going to need to perform for half a decade to really change perception.

I do think your 2nd point has been lost in many conversations on if they playoff worked.  If this was any other year FSU v Bama would have been the NCG.  And we'd be continuing the same conversation about southern dominance.
