Official Post Game Thread

Someone has to do it...Obviously not our best effort. This one is on the offense. The defense had horrible breakdowns BUT overall enough stops to win imho. The offense however did not produce. What matters though is what we do from here on out. We've got a tough stretch starting with Iowa, Penn State and Illinois coming up. We need to get over this fast...Oh and I hope this thread doesn't turn into an anti RRod rant.

I largely agree. I don't think that Vincent Smith was that bad - yeah, he's not a gamebreaker, but I trust the coaching staff thought he was the best option. I was surprised by the conservative playcalling, but it also felt like UM tried to beat MSU throwing the ball way too early.

The first two INTs seemed far more a product of bad Denard throws than anything by MSU. That first one in particular, Roundtree had nobody in front of him in the endzone - Denard just threw it behind him.

Still, credit to MSU for winning. Bring on Iowa.

The first INT was Roundtree's fault, not Denards. The receiver is supposed to come towards the QB in that situation. Instead, Roundtree drifted back towards the corner and let the DB cut in front. There's nothing that frustrates me more about WRs than when they get passive and wait for the ball to get to them. Go get the ball, make the DB come through you to get to it.

I thought state made a mistake kicking off to start the game, because we could jump ahead and put some pressure on them. Instead, with the Int and settling for the FG, state got a huge surge of confidence and the momentum swung their way.

me off is my friends and family calling for RR's job already. When I said uneducated fans piss me off, she responded with " I would not call myself an uneducated fan seeing that I have had season tickets for 30 years and yes Rich Rod must go" wtf. I responded with..It is not all RR fault..if any coach came in without any Defensive talent we would be in trouble..You can't be excited for our offense at the same time calling for RR head.I proceeded to follow it up with the decimated defense diaries. But I doubt anyone who can turn that fast will change their opinion.

Tell me about it. I had to sit in a bar today sharing a table with a middle aged couple who was visting the area (Washington DC) to check on their son. The kid was UM grad (he ran track). They weren't fans of RRod at all. They wouldn't get into it but they mentioned something about "the ethics". I tried to press them and told them about the prolific offensive numbers we've been putting up. They just didn't get it...

than what the hell happened today?

the knock on richrod is he couldnt get in done in the big10. we've beaten up the patsies, but have not done much against teams not named indiana. the jury, imo, is still out about that "prolific offense" of yours when it comes to real competition. lets see where we stand against psu, osu, iowa, and wisc.

I guess you're forgetting Notre Dame. But that's OK dude. We'll just have to see where we are at the end of the year. Once the season is over you can complain all you like. Or maybe you'll get on the band wagon with the rest of the fair weather fans out there. This offense has put up ridiculous numbers and if you haven't yet realized that then you know nothing about college football...

into the game sparty was at best # 4 d in the conference behind osu, psu, iowa and maybe even wisc. greg jones was supposedly no better than manti te'o and we were supposed to be able to pass over their secondary. despite this we still only put up 17 pts.

now its true we could have underestimated their d but its equally true our o isnt what it seems like it was against the powerhouses of uconn, nd, umass, bowling green and indiana.

Maybe RR told Robinson to NOT be a accurate? Maybe RR told his receivers to NOT catch the ball? Maybe GERG told his players to tackle by the face mask? Maybe GERG told his players to miss tackles and NOT wrap up?

The players lost this one by not executing. It's all teachable though. Learn and let's get ready for Iowa!

Not being snarky, you are right. But we've been teaching it for two years now and there is literally no sign that tacking is improving. A mediocre player can in fact be taught to tackle correctly. Sigh. I don't know, I'm just frustrated like everyone. I'm struggling with the whole lack of talent/experience thing vs correct fundamentals. Can't mediocre players still tackle properly and do their assignments properly?

Watched the game with alums in the Bay Area - our offense just wasn't very sharp today - denard's poor passes, mediocre production from the RBs, and all the dropped passes were all uncharacteristic.

It's going to be painful to hear all the psychotic and obnoxious rants from the Spartys after this loss..... But I still have faith that Denard will bounce back and deliver a few more thrilling wins for us this year though.

did you watch in berkeley at bobby g's?

it's just painful when you know that you're offense:

(1) needs to put up 35+ to win

(2) is totally able to move the ball, BUT

(3) continually shoots self in foot.

our D had it's standardly pathetic display of slow reaction time and poor tackling. In other words, they did just fine! in my book, if they keep opponents under 35, we have a chance to win.

You know those moments as a kid when you are at some kind of public gathering, and like a carnival or a 4th if July celebration at a park, and there is that one overly obnoxious drunk dude saying all kinds of crude vulgarities walking around?

Your parents either have you walk really fast past the man-spectacle or close your ears or something as if to shield you from allowing this dark scene from becoming a part of your worldview? But you can't help but stare, because this is reality in front of you? Pehaps that man is even an uncle who you really looked up to. That's how i feel right now. I tried ignoring the omens of what Michigan football is and what reality is. I even yelled blatantly at my friend who said RichRod deserved to be fired because of his insistence of the 3-3-5. Telling myself, things are looking up and Denard is the symbol of hope for a better tomorrow manifested in human form. Well now it just comes crashing down. Tay Odoms even has a broken foot. Hope is hopeless. All you can do is try making facebook statuses as therapy. It's not Denard's fault though. He is human. So is your drunk uncle. It was your fault for believing a smiling sophomore could carry the expectations from an entire fan base on his shoulders.

So what do you do? What can you do? Just type "Go Blue" and find the next thing in the near-distance future to hang your hope one...Michigan against Iowa

There are three very winnable games coming up (Penn State, Illinois, Purdue). Iowa and Wisconsin are good, but still vulnerable. Even OSU is vulnerable to option QBs. Many of us predicted 8-4 this year, which is still doable. It sucks that MSU is one of the 4, but that's how it is.

Heisman is still possible too; we just need to get our shit together for the rest of the season.

I wouldn't say "worried", but I was thinking the same exact thing today. But, I don't see any reason why we shouldn't be able to get to 7 or 8 wins, which is exactly what I expected coming into the season. Not to rehash what's already been said, but... the offense was awful today, but I'm confident they will turn things around. Without the turnovers the game would have been down to the last drive.

CRex

October 9th, 2010 at 8:28 PM ^

I'm oddly stable about this one. From the start of the season I figured we needed to score 35 to be assured a win. The defense held State to 31, so 35 would have won it. We also got some good pressure bringing four rusher. On the offensive side you add on the two TDs from the red zone turnovers and that failed field goal at the end of the first and we points and the win.

Denard reminded us he is a soph and this is the first year of starting. Henne did the same thing a few times during his soph year. We're a young team and young players make mistakes. Period. That's what happened to us today. Our schemes worked on both sides of the ball IMHO. You have Denard take back a couple bad reads he made and we're headed to OT at the very worst or likely winning it in regulation.

Also we had some flashes of brilliance in the run game.

I think people are melting down because after a flashy start we forgot where we were on the rebuilding map. The team reminded us of that today. It hurts, but it is the truth.

Let's just call this what it is: There's a ceiling for a team with a defense like this and a total disaster of a kicking game. You can't do much when your kicking game forces your hand when you should be putting points on the board, and you can't do much when your defense can't stop the other team from racking up big plays and tons of points.

It's frustrating, but this game was the reality check.

that we can't seem to get past? It seems like they do just enough to win, and have just enough big plays in timely situations to beat us... I hate to be so emo with my first post, but it's just... awfully annoying to see the smug grins of those two guys every year after they beat us...

M-Wolverine

October 9th, 2010 at 9:58 PM ^

And really, none of them have been close, but for an almost miracle comeback last year. You can't credit MSU without admitting - he owns us. And he will till we can now put 2 in a row on them. I mean, 2 of our 3 losses were at home....

Dantonio has also had the luxury of facing three consecutive first-year starters at QB for Michigan. Young QBs make mistakes. Cousins threw two picks in last year's game, and Forcier made his share of bad throws. Today, Cousins was sharp while Denard was unusually off. I do think he'll do a lot better next year.

A young Michigan team lost and MSU took advantage of our mistakes like a decent team ought to do. Now, the fact that we made what looked like to be so many unforced mistakes in a weird way gives me more hope b/c I honestly think that those are correctable.

M-Wolverine

October 9th, 2010 at 11:50 PM ^

They get an Oregon team they already beat up last year; some sub-power like Boise; or heck, if it gets weird, maybe MSU. Here's hoping Nebraska can make it an all "Big Ten" final instead. (Ugh. Reduced to rooting for the Cornhuskers. That's how bad it's gotten). Because Oklahoma has had even less luck in bowls that OSU lately.

I'd rather be where we are now, then where we were in 2007 at the same point. Difference: beat MSU in 2007. Our stock is going up and it clearly wasn't then. But blue chip performers dip every once in a while on the way up.

To the casual fans and MSM, (most of the Rich Rodriguez haters and obnoxious Sparty fans are just casual fans), winning the rivalry games are all that count. Not the general direction the more serious fans see.

Get ready to put up with a lot of really annoying chatter and smack talk for months on end. That won't change until Michigan wins these games with MSU, OSU, PSU etc.

Beating Iowa would change perceptions in a big way though. I'd say it is a real opportunity for this program.

I agree that trashing Carr is useless, but that doesn't mean people can't be critical of his latter years. He was always a great recruiter and a good guy, but his playcalling left something to be desired and his teams struggled toward the end. People are already burying RR and have been doing so since he arrived at UM; I think it is fair to point out that all was not rosy with Carr.

M-Wolverine

October 9th, 2010 at 10:05 PM ^

I saw an MSU team with tricks and switched up plays that worked. I saw us...not so much. But it wasn't even that bad. Just this tried meme that we were so bad play calling then, and thank God that's over, is stupid. This team was outcoached today. It's not a career indictment, but let's be honest and say it hasn't been some grand improvement either. For all the bad play calls and poor recruiting, Lloyd did win his last SIX vs. MSU (and would have been 8 but for some cheating).

If you'd rather not have winning streaks vs. MSU, PSU, Purdue, Illinois, and be winning bowl games vs. Florida, that's fine. But don't still credit where we're going to Rich without blaming him for where we are.

Sure, Iowa is an opportunity. But it could also make for a LONG bye week (which made this game so important). I'm guessing you're not hitting Vegas with your confidence over next week's opportunity.

Meh, the game was a disappointment of course. However, had we lost to a team like Iowa or Wisconsin in the fashion we did today then it wouldn't have hurt nearly as bad. The offense just wasn't having its day and the defense was the defense. Today has made me realize how much I really dislike the fans of MSU though. Sparty running all the way across the field to stand right in front of the student section and wave the MSU flag after the game was the icing on the cake. He had no reason to run over and do that so he was going 120 yards out of his way just to be an asshat. Go Blue, Beat Iowa.

I've collected my wits, and I'm sorry for my earlier tirade. Iowa is definitely beatable, since I don't think they have anywhere near the quality on offense that MSU does. I wish the best to Martin and Odoms -- we need you guys!

Well, at the beginning of the season, if you told me we would be 5-1 at the midway point, I would have said, "Yes please, thank you." Losing to Sparty sucks, but with our defense forcing us to have to score over 30 to have a chance, I think everyone knew were were going to take some lumps in conference play. Right now, I would take 3-3 for the rest of the season and be pretty happy with that.

Ok, on to the "reacting". Denard had to come back to being human at some point, and today was the day. The defense is a lost cause, I can see it getting slightly better as the secondary continues to learn on the job, but until we have better talent on that side of the ball that knows what it is doing, we are not going to see that much of a leap. We are half way through the year, it pretty much is what it is, terrible. However, the running back situation continues to vex me more then anything else. Can we please see more of the other backs? Smith/Shaw are just not the solution, and we have at least 6 more games (hopefully 7) before we can annoint Dee Hart as our running back savior. Lets see what the other guys can do.

We're not the only team Sparty has beaten this season. Sparty will run over a lot of teams with their balanced attack. No one expected us to run the table in the big 10. We didn't execute and we lost the turnover battle. We know what we did wrong, and we can learn from the mistakes. We have a young team and perhaps the offense thought they were unstoppable. Every good offense has their off days. Perhaps we can come out sharp next week for Iowa.

Michigan4Life

October 9th, 2010 at 9:05 PM ^

didn't execute in critical situation. Two of the INTs that Denard threw was simply bad throws, not bad reads. I have to see it again to check on his mechanics because he was either late in his throws or his footwork didn't allow the ball to come out quicker. After that, Denard seems more indecisive and it shows when he hesitiated when he threw up for grab to Grady.

The OL had trouble sustaining blocks in the 2nd half and that's probably due to MSU slanting hard with LBs filling up the gap quickly.

The WRs had several drops. Roundtree was the most notable one but it didn't matter since they scored a TD. Hemingway was simply trying to run before he secured the ball. Stonum stopped a little bit but if he had kept going, he would've caught the ball.

The defense made a few stops but the LBs play were disappointing. Ezeh was consistently late to fill up the hole and get washed out easily. Mouton had some good moments and other bad moments.

Cam Gordon had a terrible game and doesn't look to wrap up which is frustrated me. His mistakes were magnified even more because the front 7 didn't do very well. Michigan need a S who have the speed and the range plus sure tackling ability to succeed.

Well, sadly this one went how I expected. I was hopeful going into this one, but had a very strong suspicion we would get outplayed like we did today. It sucks because it's Michigan State and we have to deal with their fans for a few days, but we are still 5-1.

We now need to put this one behind us and not let the bottom fall out of this season. The only win I am confident in is at Purdue. Beyond that, anything can happen. Iowa can go either way and OSU will destroy us. Wisco and Illinois I am still unsure about. Overall, this can still be a solid season, provided we can win 2-3 of our remaining games.

Talk agains RR is way premature now. Just as 1 big win can't define a coach, neither can 1 bad loss (speaking only of this season). How we respond the rest of the way will be more telling of RR than just 1 off-game.

1. Defense played to expectations, it's frustrating but no more so than any other week this season and, at this point, I don't ask for anything more than 4 stops in a game from them. I am excited about Jibreel Black though.

2. I wasn't annoyed by the playcalling (minus the punt at the end of the game which RR explained in his presser). I was annoyed by the lack of execution. I would not have been surprised if the defense cost us the game, I was a little disappointed that it seemed mostly due to lack of offensive execution.

3. This game served as a reminder of my season expectations. As explosive as this offensive is, there are still some really young players out there who have a lot to learn and a lot to develop (which, holy hell, offensive juggernaut here we come). This loss was to a pretty good Spartan team and was a toss-up coming in. It was not a "must win".

4. We're going to get those 8 wins and possibly 9 and have a spectacular showing in a bowl game this year. RR stays the course and we continue the climb back to the top.

Let's demolish Iowa.
