Noon Starts Open Thread
We'll get this one started -
BTN has Eastern Michigan / Michigan State or Purdue versus Southern Illinois
ESPN is going with Georgia Tech versus Virginia Tech
ESPN2 will be taking on Bowling Green versus Wisconsin
ESPNU will be curing insomia with Iowa and Pitt
ESPNNEWS, supposedly, will carry Western Illinois versus Northwestern
ESPN3 is carrying its normal grab bag - Maryland / Syracuse, Duke / Tulane, Marhsall / Akron and others.

I know he's had some good seasons since then, but he milks that 2000 NC a little too much. Duke, UConn and Florida have won multiple titles since then.
September 20th, 2014 at 1:49 PM ^
This. Yet another insufferable thing about talking to an MSU fan. 1997 is the Stone Age. A whole three years more recent is the most relevant championship of the century.
September 20th, 2014 at 1:08 PM ^
Except Izzo hasn't won a championship in almost 15 years and Dantonio hasn't won one ever? And Michigan basketball has had more success the last few years than MSU including going 6 for 8 in head to head games over the last four years? And Brady Hoke at Michigan has the same amount of BCS bowl appearances and victories as Dantonio at MSU? But yes, grrrr, very grrrr...
September 20th, 2014 at 1:15 PM ^
It's more the tone of what Hoke says. He's repeatedly said that the goal is to win the Big Ten. People get that you can't win a title without winning your conference (unless you're in the SEC) but other programs talk about competing for NCs -- Hoke talks about winning the Big Ten and if an opportunity to play for an NC happens, so be it. It shows a lack of fire and complacency and is an outdated mode of thinking. It's not about actually winning but it's about the perception of your program and how fans and outsiders view you. Your goal should be to win an NC every year. The Patriots or Seahawks don't say our goal is to win the AFC/NFC.

Cool strawman bro. I'm just explaining what Bando said. It sets the tone for the team.
September 20th, 2014 at 1:35 PM ^
September 20th, 2014 at 1:29 PM ^
And what would happen if Hoke went around talking about competing for National Championships? People around here would be up in arms about how we have to "walk before we can run." I don't think the team's performance has anything to do with Hoke talking about winning B1G championships rather than National Championships.
Also, if our goal is to win the National Championship every year then I suppose Lloyd should have that building and statue in his honor on State St. and not Bo?
September 20th, 2014 at 1:34 PM ^
It's more the tone of what Hoke says.If you're not happy with our record, that's fine, but going after the guy for press-conference soundbites is really grasping at straws.

Reiterates my longstanding point that the "Michigan Man" meme is brought up about a hundred times more often, usually unprovoked, by people who don't like the term.
Literally no one brought it up until you did.

Beilein is a better coach than Izzo. He will continue to beat him head to head and have more success in the league and tourney. The last 3 years were not a fluke.
I'm skeptical that hoke can do what dantonio has, but through 3 years I don't see much difference in their success, so let's wait and see before we jump into the red cedar naked.
September 20th, 2014 at 1:38 PM ^
Izzo can talk big all he wants, but his team is still going to suck this year. We'll sweep them again.
September 20th, 2014 at 3:12 PM ^
Izzo will retire after continued Michigan basketball dominance, and D'antonio and staff will move on to greener pastures.
September 20th, 2014 at 12:53 PM ^
EMU beat Morgan State by 3 points. Morgan state lost to Holy Cross from the Patriot who doesn't even offer scholarships and got killed by Harvard.
September 20th, 2014 at 12:55 PM ^
Iowa is built to beat Pitt but Pitt is better than most people think.
September 20th, 2014 at 12:56 PM ^
This could very well be Zeno's Drive and Pitt will keep gaining half the remaining distance to the end zone. This would make it a very Big Ten moment indeed even though they are in the ACC.
September 20th, 2014 at 1:02 PM ^
Well right now the Big 10 is trying to make an argument that if you take out FSU we're just as good as the ACC so seeing VATech beating OSU or Pitt (who is a nothingburger team) take out a supposed Big 10 West favorite by any large margin kills any of those sorts of arguments. Stuff like Boston College beating USC already killed it for me but some will continue to make the good fight.
Right now it's a 1 team conference in terms of national relevance. I am hoping Bowling Green goes in and beats Wisconsin because when MSU beats Wisconsin 50-14 it won't be "11-1 Wisconsin". Wisconsin has almost as easy of a schedule as Iowa when you look at it.
Still worried MSU is going to back into the playoffs just because they are basically going to play a junior varsity schedule with the Big 10 while all their competition is going to be actually playing real teams here or there.

MSU up 35-0 over EMU

Maryland in control of Syracuse
September 20th, 2014 at 1:06 PM ^
There would be some irony if Maryland pulls it off; if Iowa falls..... then at around 3:30 PM today Rutgers and Maryland would have the Big 10's only wins versus the power 5 conferences. Delaney is a genius after all.
September 20th, 2014 at 1:07 PM ^
Izzo is talking about winning a national championship with Mark dantonio in the same season. He hasn't even been to the final four since I was a sophomore in high school. I'm now a sophomore in college. If anybody should be talking about winning the NC it's Beilein who has owned Izzo head to head and made the national championship game two years ago.
September 20th, 2014 at 1:09 PM ^
They both appear to be programs on the rise, especially Maryland. I think Rutger just happens to have a good O-line with possibly the best RB in the nation but time will tell.
September 20th, 2014 at 1:13 PM ^
Gary James?
Good RB but he might be the 4th best in the conference not to mention in the country - Abdullah, Gordon, and that Tevin kid out of Indiana. Then you've got guys like Gurley out there etc.
September 20th, 2014 at 1:22 PM ^
I haven't seen a lot of these guys play. However, today I have been watching Wisconsin, and Gordon can really play.
September 20th, 2014 at 1:37 PM ^
Obviously stats are kind of skewed based on competition but still cool to check out. Gurley probably is the best back in the country, though he hasn't shown anything as a pass catcher.

If Coleman played for a legit team he'd be getting buzz Abdullah and Gordon get.

Wiscy up 21-10 but BGSU down to Wiscy's 7 already.
September 20th, 2014 at 1:10 PM ^
Iowa manages to shave a little under three minutes off the clock on that three-and-out. I believe what we may have just seen is Greg Davis' take on tempo offense, but perhaps with less play action.
As a minor weather note for our game today, it is now quite breezy here in the western portion of Wayne County, about 20 minutes east of Ann Arbor. Kicking of any kind could be interesting.

Wisconsin INTs BGSU in end zone returns it about 50 yards.

BGSU lucky that didn't go for six.

Pitt gets late field goal, up 17-7 to end the half
September 20th, 2014 at 1:22 PM ^
EMU does not have a first down this half. That's pretty amazing to accomplish.

So glad I got my nap in...usually I wake up and watch Gameday, then the noon games and by 2:30 I'm struggling once the food coma from lunch starts to kick in.
I got TMZ Gameday off early, these noon games are awful so I was able to get my nap in...now time to hit the grill for the afternoon and kill some more time before 3:30.
September 20th, 2014 at 2:31 PM ^
Sounds like a great day no matter what happens.

My wife (Hawkeye fan) and I just received two incredibly taunting voicemails from my buddy who is a Pitt grad - good times.
September 20th, 2014 at 1:37 PM ^
Make sure you save the voicemail.
If Iowa comes back and wins call your friend and just play the voicemail that he left for you two.
