No Spielman, You're Wrong! GO BLUE!!!

Submitted by elhead on

From last year in A2 - mid-way through the first quarter. ESPN announcers react to Gardner coming into The Game...

Dave Pasch: “And Devin Gardner is coming in the game at QB for Michigan. Denard Robinson will stay in the game… What do you think of this?”

Chris Spielman: “I think it’s wrong! I think it’s the wrong idea!”

May Chris Spielman* have nightmares all week!

GO BLUE!!!

* And I hope like hell we get Griese doing color commentary... it's only fair!

Also wrong, Brady Hoke. But he was wrong this year at Lincoln, when he brought in Bellomy to QB instead of Devin. That decision looks worse and worse each week...

HOke's made many right decisions, but what glares about the Nebraska game is that that second half cost us the BiG.  I knew it as it happened.  I just sat there staring at the screen, knowing this was the most important 30 minutes of football all year, and the massive blunder that was an unprepared Bellomy is what stared back at me.

I'm still loving the staff, and Devin, but the more Devin shines, the more I "wait... what?" Borges' decision to play Bellomy EVER over Devin.

I wouldn't say that Bellomy was unprepared as much as I would say he was not capable of being better at this point in his career.  This opens up another issue, on why DG wasn't considered an option in the Neb. game, especially after Bellomy's early struggles.

If I remember Correctly, Spielman always wanted the ball in Denards hands-- he should never sit a play out or have anyone else (like Gardner) take snaps at QB-- even if Denard is the field at the same time.  I'm not a Spielman fan, but his comments weren't ridiculous...

He is completely unprofessional.  He lied multiple times last year about Lewan being downfield in the Sparty game.  They showed the replay multiple times and he was in the backfield.  He is always looking for a reason to bad mouth us.  I really, really hope we don't have to listen to his nonsense on Saturday.

Spielman's a good dude, but unlike Herbstreit, he just doesn't have the grey matter between his ears to jump into objective mode as his job description now requires.  He is just too much of a homer Bucknut.  Nothing wrong with that, and not his fault for being the semi-dumbass he is, but I just blame his network.

"Chris Spielman: “I think it’s wrong! I think it’s the wrong idea!”" - from the OP

Making a defense try to account for the two best athletes in your offense is never a bad idea. As someone mention, when we went to a "deuce" formation, Robinson was almost always the decoy as I recall and it wasn't as successful as, say, the inverted veer, which managed to get us 13 yards on average each time we used it.  That being said, the "deuce" worked beautifully against Iowa and I certainly hope it gives the Buckeyes fits (play action definitely will, given their pass defense situation).

Many on this blog agreed with spielman all week leading up to the game. There were numerous threads in which posters suggested that if Denard couldn't throw, that it would make sense to get him invoked at rb/slot/WR/jet sweep etc. All such posters were uniformly blasted and told that this was the worst idea ever.

Still nervous about what Gardner will look like against a halfway decent defense...

OSU plays a lot of zone which can confuse QB's and force picks.

Their pass defense is like 91st in the country.  This is not your daddy's OSU defense this year.  I am sure Urban will get them back but right now it's not the typical defense you have become used to down there.  See Indiana game.

Not being a "downer" but a voice of reason when I say that Gardner has played well in his 3 starts this year. Yet, those starts were against Minny, NW and Iowa. Minny is Minny, NW essentially had us beat minus poor deep coverage and an impossilbly caught bomb despite having an average defense and Iowa is the worst I've seen them in almost a decade. I want nothing more than for Gardner to go off and us beat osu's ass! Yet, he is still prone to indicision as much as forcing balls into traffic. Better straight up passing QB than Denard? I'd say yes on each player's best days. Has he faced a defense with osu's talent and run stopping ability (likely forcing us to be one dimensional)? Not even close. I just want to see this entire team ball the fuck out Saturday and crack skulls. Yet, not sold on Gardner as we've yet to see him play a defense above "average". He won't have 10 seconds in the pocket to dance around before throwing, those goal line bootlegs are beyond obvious, etc. All stops must be pulled and I hope Gardner does light them the fuck up. GO BLUE!!!!!

Agreed.  We know what Denard will do against a speedy defense - the history is there.  Gardner IMO is harder to game plan for and having Denard as a running option while Devin is in there is going t take a lot of practice time up for OSU this week.  I expect Devin to make mistakes - frankly his progress from a year ago is "shocking" as he showed little in game action (yes mostly mop up time but he looked nothing like a top ranked national recruit - see what redshirt frosh QBs are doing at Oregon and A&M).  Now he looks like a young Vince Young, albeit versus junk competition excl NW.  But I expect a better ability to come back from mistakes with that arm and a more two dimensional player.

Also people are freaking out about OSU defnese as if its their vintage - it's not a great defensive team.  I think when we look back at the game Sunday morning the discussion will be more about what OSU can do to our defense as we have a lot of trouble with Miller type QBs.  And the defense seems to have sagged a bit here the last 3-4 weeks, even against some bad offenses.  (yes they didnt give up a ton of points to Iowa but that offense is horried and only throws to TE and we still had trouble with stopping that)

GRIESE AND SPEILMAN in the booth together. Shit would be hilarious.

SPEILMAN: Brian I just watched as Miller shaked and baked his way for a 20 yard TD...
GRIESE: he is fast but those 3 holding penalties probably didn't help.
SPEILMAN: I didn't see any holding, that was just great athletism
GRIESE: ok Chris

GRIESE: man Chris Denard is having a great day as a QB today in the shoe,
SPEILMAN: it's really only because i spoke w Urbs yesterday and feels sorry for him and his lack of QB skills and hasn't blitzed to much all day.
GRIESE: didn't Urb recruit Denard at Florida
SPEILMAN: ya Brian but it was to be a WR. Never to be a QB....he is not what Florida or Ohio is looking for.
GRIESE: what does Ohio look for in a QB Chris
SPEILMAN: Brian they like athletic QB's who can run when they need to take off.
GRIESE: you know Denard has ran for about 4000 yards as a college QB..
SPEILMAN: most of those yards are vs very inferior talent Brian.

GRIESE: are you watching the same game as me?
SPEILMAN: yes Brian I'm watching the best team in college football today play.
GRIESE: you know Michigan is up 26-16 w only 3 minutes left in the game?
SPEILMAN: it's just a hiccup and doesn't mean anything.

Lets go to a commercial guys!!!
