ND students rush the field after beating #14 Utah

Submitted by Leaders And Best on

Wow. Notre Dame students rush the field after beating a soon-to-be unranked Utah squad.  I still can't believe how far the standards have fallen at Notre Dame.

As bad as things have been for Michigan the last 2 years,  that sight really puts things in perspective about how worse things could be.

To be fair, there was a campaign going by ND seniors to get the seniors to all rush the field at the end of this game (apparently senior students are allowed on the field after the last home game of the year) as a pseudo-protest/satire of their class having the most loses in ND history. Or yes, they're thrilled at the prospect of beating Army or USC and getting bowl eligible.

A Michigan fan (as I am) should be the last one to mention falling standards.  I love the position we're in, but it's unusual to watch a Michigan group who is a middle of the road Big 10 team.  I know we'll keep improving as long as the defense gets better year by year, but for know we should focus on rooting our team on more than laughing at a program for something that could be said of our program.

Michigan students would have rushed the field after we beat Illinois last week if it were possible, and they are now 5-5. I wouldn't worry about them, let them have the little victories.

When we clinched an undefeated regular season in 1997 against our rival.  Police presence will never keep the crowd from rushing the field if they really want it bad enough.  Anyone who attended the 1997 game will remember that the first couple fans to rush were overtaken by some security, and the police pepper sprayed the student section as a preventative measure.  It didn't stop us.

DPS was ridiculous that day.  They basically pepper sprayed the lower 20-30 rows of the student section (pepper spraying several thousand people doesn't seem like the best way to keep order).  Then once students started trickling onto the field, they spread out in a line and wrestled to the ground any student that got within arm's length -- then let them go.  As though the punishment for rushing the field is a minor police assault.  Sounds like they figured out how not to be douches for 2003.

That was my first year on campus and I received a split package that didn't include OSU.  So, I had to scalp tickets.  I bought mine the first week of class, Row 4, for $90 each (bought 2).  I remember seeing people duck in succession in the rows in front of me.  As a freshman, I wondered if it was some sort of cheer I hadn't seen yet.  Then I started swallowing pepper spray.

Not fucking cool, guys.  Whatever, made it that much more rewarding to get on the field after the game.

1. It's the #14 team. That is reasonably in the "rush the field" requirements.

2. Where have you been the last 15 years? You can't believe how the standards have fallen? Really?

They beat the number 14 team in the nation and the said team wasn't a rival in any sense, nor even a team worthy of any sort of dislike. And ND is supposedly an elite program. This is not worthy of rushing the field.

I know it was more recent than 1997, I have a picture in my office of the field being rushed after 2003 OSU.  I also happenned to be on the field.

I totally agree.  There is nothing wrong with celebrating a big victory, and even though Utah isn't that good, it is still a big win.  28-3 is a huge win, and if ND can win next week they'll be bowling.

Do you think ND will take a bowl bid even if it is to a weaker game, or will they pass like before?
