2 weeks 4 days ago Dude. Yes.

I was a sophomore. I was in the band. Talk about a letdown of epic proportions. Lot's of great memories from UM football, but, that is NOT one of them.

15 weeks 1 day ago Next step...

...orange turf for the field!

FWIW I like the multi-colored face masks.

24 weeks 2 days ago Enjoy it

I'm just going to focus on watching Denard play for The Team in one more game.

Borges general futility and lack of imagination? Going to ignore that.

Norfleet on defense? I have a plan to convince myself that this is not real. It involves beer.

Win v. Loss? Not really that important to me.

Thanks to Brian and staff. Great content all season long. This site is the best. Much appreciated. Happy New Year, keep up the great work, and Go Blue!

27 weeks 1 day ago Shocker!

I, for one, can't believe that the offensive genius Al Borges can't find a place for Norfleet.

D+D Football Factory is closed for business due to mismanagement (Borges).

28 weeks 6 days ago Goodbye!

Credit to Chris Petersen at Boise State (like he needs more accolades - that guy's awesome) for keeping this kid in check when Young was a student there. It's a Chuck Daly/Dennis Rodman type situation.

Kudos, Mr. Petersen.

Happy Trails, Mr. Young.

29 weeks 2 days ago Borges Fail

The simplest way to describe the failure of Al Borges is by asking the following question:

What would Urban Meyer have done with Denard Robinson on OSU's team? Do you think that Braxton Miller would've been pulled in order to insert Denard for QB keepers? Hell. To. The. No. The list that Brian mentions in this post about plays involving Denard would just be the beginning. If Denard was on Meyer's team OSU would've torched UM yesterday. It wouldn't even have been close. Urban Meyer would recognize that Denard on the field in any capacity makes all of his teammates better.

"Everybody" wanted Denard in as a RB. "He's not a QB." "Line him up in the backfield or in the slot" was shouted for the last 4 years. A throwing arm injury drops this possibility in Michigan's lap 3 weeks ago. It's perfect. A chance to keep Denard's legs involved without having to worry about his arm limitations. Not to mention the simulatneous and surprising emergence of a very talented athlete and QB in Devin Gardner. And Borges blows it. Total fail.

Brian is exactly right here:

"It's indefensible. It's a failure without any possible explanation."

29 weeks 3 days ago Prediction

UFR will have Lewan graded out to his worst game of the season. I seem to remember him looking sheepish on several plays. Very out of the ordinary for him, IMHO.

29 weeks 4 days ago Quality post. Pretty

Quality post.

Pretty disappointing play calling today. I just don't understand how the offense can be more creative against Iowa than against OSU. I don't remember any play calls that used Denard as a decoy at all. So much for Borges "staying up nights this week" thinking about what to do with both Devin and Denard in the game at the same time.

Denard = run (usually, QB run)

Devin  = pass after pointless play action to Rawls

Why not run play action off of something you actually do?

In fact, don't even remember seeing Denard in the 4th quarter at all (I did miss the last 5 minutes, tho). Maybe he was injured?

I hope some Borges gets some questions about this in the post game presser (not that it'll make any difference or that he will answer them). Also, Hoke should get some criticism for the decision to go for it on 4th and 3 after using the timeout. Punt and lean on your stellar defense by giving them some field position. Especially on the road. That seemed like a pretty obvious miscalculation to me.

This gameplan felt like a lot of wasted opportunity and leaves me longing for what could've (probably should've) been.

36 weeks 10 hours ago Who wants to go back and play

Who wants to go back and play ND again using this game plan?

37 weeks 1 day ago That's nice, Al

Unless you spent the week learning how to "take what the defense gives you" I'm not interested.

Bubble screen. Laser screen. Running Denard more. Whatever.

Be more flexible in your strategy. Emphasize the strengths of your CURRENT roster. Accept blame so you senior QB doesn't have to apologize at press conferences. Otherwise, I'm not interested.

"if we play to our capability" sounds like a cop out, "they didn't execute" excuse to me.

37 weeks 4 days ago Hilarious Kool-Aid Picture

.....and this

"Denard...was amongst the worst guys in the country in interception rate last year? I mean, we know this happens. It has just happened against Air Force and UMass, at home. It is not going to stop happening. Calling plays thatemphasize this flaw is insane."

Brian Cook, FTW

38 weeks 14 hours ago Bubble/Laser whatever.

I don't understand why this play isn't used more. Seems like a short pass like that is much easier for Denard to throw.

Just use it already. Especially when the defense is flat out giving it to you. And Al, stop being so cranky in news conferences when asked about it.

38 weeks 2 days ago Off the top of my head
Off the top of my head recently:
  1. http://mgoblog.com/content/picture-pages-who-are-you-optioning
  2. general complaints about lack of bubble screen and several posts about why it would be effective/has been effective in the past
  3. posts regarding shotgun > under center Denard
  4. Yes. Statement about 5 out of 7 bad games called.

I think Brian (and others here) bring it in terms of data.

I don't want to split hairs about how much has to be "wrong" in the <insert game plan here> to be declared a "debacle."  The case for Denard's strengths not being optimized in this offense and by this coordinator is well thought out and argued on this blog. It is not just the spewings of a fly by night color commentator or sports journalist. It's a reasoned and detailed analysis with examples to back up that point of view.

38 weeks 2 days ago 3 words

In. Game. Adjustments.

38 weeks 2 days ago Note perfect post.

"...and run play action off plays you actually run and then Denard might get back to the things he was doing in an offense that was not trying to jam him into a hole he clearly does not fit. I thought maybe we'd learned that lesson after Iowa, but apparently not."

--

Right on, Brian.

Borges continues to try and square the circle utilizing Denard. You're not the only one who has noticed, but, you may the only one who uses solid data (citing the 17 games of Borges regime) to back up the theory.

Cool beans. I'm a fan of former Wolverines doing well.

40 weeks 3 days ago Love this

It's impossible for me to see the games this year. I work in the Caribbean and watch a lot of cricket, soccer, and Aussie football on ESPN Caribbean while keeping up with the Michigan score on the ESPN2 Bottom Line. So nice to be able to read a review of the game action the very next day. I thought I would have to wait for the UFRs this year. Thanks again and keep up the great work!

How about Norfleet catching a bubble screen? Sounds perfect, amirite?

41 weeks 2 days ago Norfleet and bubble screens.

Norfleet and bubble screens. That is what I shall remember about this game. And this write up. Hilarious stuff.

Any chance Borges didn't run Denard in order avoid injury in a game where UM wasn't going to win anyway?

41 weeks 2 days ago Totally agree.

This game is and always was ultimately meaningless for Michigan. Win and it's the miracle scenario putting Michigan in the national championship hunt. Lose and it's just expected. Lose with Denard getting hurt? That's the nightmare.

It's already bad enough with Countess and Lewan (not sure how bad he's hurt) going down in a game where Michigan had nothing to gain by playing.

You think people are dark today with the outcome...imagine the headline of "Denard done for the year" on this blog. Yeesh. Let's play some opponents that matter, please.

Sounds like he may have found another diamond in the rough. I hope he works out in Arizona. Nice opportunity for that kid. :-)

I would've NEVER heard about this if not for an OT post on mgoblog. Thanks for posting!

1 year 22 weeks ago 1995

My junior year at Michigan (I was there during the 4 years sandwiched between Rose Bowl trips). I'm actually (almost) in the picture up there where Mercury Hayes is hauling in that pass....right behind the ref, in the band, to the tenor drummer's right, in the front row.  I remember Butterfield dropping a pass with about 4 seconds left in the middle of the field on the play JUST before the final pass. I remember feeling lucky that he dropped it because UM had no timeouts and wouldn't have been able to stop the clock.

My favorite player during those years (93 - 97) was Ninef F. Aghakhan. The DL with the very intimidating last name. Actually, I'm pretty sure that "The Agh" graduated in 93 or 94ish, so, he might not have been on the 95 team.

Thanks for the memories and thanks for listening. Great post!
