In the short-term --- as long as it's an untilted and equal battlefield (and the football field qualifies here) --- "us, the disrespected, against them" works more often than not.  Sports and life in general.  Always has, always will.

But I can't see how this sustains for several months.  That's a long time!

Eventually --- it's going to be November 4.  They've perhaps lost a couple games, and now it's 45 degrees in Boulder and feels colder because the wind is blowing.  The crowd isn't as into it, and a tough and fundamentally good Oregon State team is in town and they're punching you in the mouth, they're not scared of you.

Maybe my exact scenario doesn't play out, but we WILL eventually see whether they have something else in the tank or not.

Tampering is one of those rules that is illegal out loud but is quietly totally legal. It is happening literally everywhere at all times.

Example: Kenneth Walker spent less than a day in the portal before officially committing to MSU. I don't mention this to imply that MSU has done something illegal, but that this is par for the course. Do we really think KW3 put his name in the portal, contacted/received contact from programs, and evaluated his best option in less than 24 hours? Absolutely not. He knew where he was going before jumping in the portal at all.

Players are in contact with other programs constantly now. Most transfers are a done deal before the player even enters the portal. Welcome to modern college football.

A player can enter the portal and but do not contact or open to contact in his information.   To be honest though most players have been contacted by schools that are shady or the one that have broken the rules in the past.   The weird thing is some schools will complain of this school contacting a player not in the portal but never report so I assume they do the same.   College football sports is essentially the Wild West no rules really or schools just ignoring them.  Not all do this I don't see certain schools or coaches who have good integrity doing this but I would say about every SEC school will do it.

I dont know if Deon doing that was an NCAA violation or not but it sure was cool as hell for him to do what he did.  Take Colorado -23.5 against CSU and dont look back.

If I was player (and any good), I think I'd love to play for Prime

Deion gets such a bad rap with some people that you have to wonder if it's motivated for some other reason...  I mean, as loud as the guy is, for as much attention as he seeks for himself, he hasn't done one friggen' thing to alienate teammates or cause locker room rifts throughout his entire career.  Same thing with Terrell Owens - everyone claims to hate him because he seeks so much adulation.  Except that his teammates have all loved him being on their team.

Talk about pearl clutching...

I hate this. Harbaugh himself, in his first few years at Michigan, got a lot of heat for the things he did and said, and the way he acted. Lots of coaches generate controversy. But unlike Harbaugh (and Rick Pitino, and Bill Belicheck, and Steve Spurrier, and Jimmy Johnson, etc.), "Coach Prime" takes it all intensely personally, acts like it's completely inexplicable, and asserts a right to some kind of weird revenge.

Spare me the accusations of racism. If a coach is going to put himself in the media spotlight, he can't then claim to  be surprised to find himself the subject of attention.

Deion lives off being a larger-than-life figure, and God knows, what he did to the roster at Colorado is unprecedented. It may be "legal". Hell, it may even be ethical. Whatever. It's still something nobody has every done before.

And now he is shocked shocked to find himself the subject of controversy and conversation? Give me a break.

I've mentioned before that I don't have a horse in the Colorado / Deion race - but, it seems like players and coach - are playing the "disrespect" card quite regularly.

It will be interesting to see how this develops...

This seems to be a common characteristic of the “greats”.  Find that extra motivation.  Intrinsic motivation only gets you so far.  It is possible to become complacent or distracted. The greats find that motivation often by blowing something out of proportion and getting offended.  Deion has always been great at that.

If Coach Prime coached against Coach Prime would the world implode from the levels of disrespect? Its funny but people dont care for all these coaches for their egos then coach Prime comes around and they are like "I love it". If James Franklin came out and talked like him the big ten chat boards would melt down. It makes for fun watching that is for sure.

There is a distinct separation between the person Frames Janklin is and the person Deion Sanders is.  It's not even a comparison!  Deion has backed up 100% of his talk throughout his career, and he's currently backing up his coaching resume.

Frames?  Not so much...

Really?  Deion hasn't even met the level of "James Franklin 2011-2013, solely at Vanderbilt."  Can we pump the brakes just a bit?

Here's the comparison:

  • Deion:
    • 3 years at Jackson State, outside of Campbell (a 1-score win over a below .500 Big South team), he never beat a D-1AA/FCS school that wasn't an HBCU.  I'm not picking on HBCUs, but they play considerably below-average football at the FCS level.
    • 0-2 in Celebration Bowls at Jackson State.  Lost both times as the favorite.  Never did win the "HBCU Championship."
    • 2 games at Colorado.  TCU & Nebraska might be good - and yes, TCU was a National Finalist last year.  But they might suck too!  Can we get a bit more data?
  • Franklin (Vanderbilt):
    • 3 years: coming off consecutive 2-10 seasons, they had 2 Top 25 seasons, 2 9 win-seasons, 2-1 in Bowls.
    • In his last year, Vandy beat all of Florida, UGA and Tennessee.  I get it, they were down, Missouri & South Carolina finished 1-2 in the SEC East that year.  But that's still Florida, UGA and Tennessee - something that would have been unimaginable 3 years prior.

The record isn't the point as much as backing up statements made.

Love your comments, NittanyFan, so I hate to disagree with you . . . however

Vanderbilt never broke a ranking better than 40th on fancy stats.  Franklin's winning record at Vandy is a mirage.  They demonstrated competence not excellence.  He coached well enough to get his team to show up (which by itself is noteworthy but not like Lou Holtz at Minnesota or Snyder at Kansas State, Meyer at BGSU or Utah.)

And I am not sure about Prime Time.  He always talks a good job but time will tell.  I just don't see how a team that is that new to each other can jell on key plays.)

Now, this feels unfair.  "Coached well enough to get his team to show up?"  I mean, he won 9 games in back-to-back seasons at Vanderbilt.  In the 55 seasons prior to Franklin, Vandy had won 8 games in a season twice and 9 games zero times.  They haven't won 7 in any season since.

Fancy stats, sure, they weren't a Title contender.  But for the record, FEI (the 2nd most popular fancy stat to SP+, and one I personally prefer) had Vandy at 26th in 2012 (42nd in 2013).

I don't see how he grades out at anything other than an "A" for his 3-year stint at Vanderbilt.  As for comparing Deion at 3 years versus Franklin at 3 years, Deion wasn't an "A" (he's a "B+", IMO) at Jackson State and the only fair grade for Colorado at this point is "TBD."

Of course there are haters. He is a loud mouth braggard but gets a pass for some reason that 99.9% of the coaches out there wouldnt get. Probably the same reason why some people hate him more than they should. Im just here for the Prime Time show! Another Pac12 team that can put up 50 on any given night is fantastic. Utah, Washington, USC, Oregon, Colorado hell even Arizona and UCLA. Nobody is getting out alive.

The only way that the CSU coach's comments make any sense is if he and Deion got together and said "hey...let's do the WWE thing where we hype up the crowd with some fake disrespekt call-outs before the match".

If so, genius.  I was not vested in the outcome of the CSU-CU game, but I now kinda am?
