National Championship odds
Saw this on ESPN.com:
Michigan was listed as a 500-1 longshot to win the National Championship heading into Week 4. The Wolverines were moved to 60-1 after they dismantled BYU on Saturday. Could a rebuilding year quickly turn into a playoff run? Week 5 betting notes (Insider)
Probably comes with the territory of becoming ranked, but I wouldnt have minded putting a few bucks down at 500-1.

In my biased opinion we have a mature team with the best coaching staff (pro or college) in the country and won't lose another game this year. Raback It
September 30th, 2015 at 12:10 PM ^
Clearly, I am biased as well...but if an SEC team had a strong defense, with an elite HSP, that you cannot run against...consider that with an average run game, and a moderately decent qb...then you have just about every mid-level SEC team, every year. It's Bama to a tee, Tennessee, SC, Georgia. If Michigan had the same roster, same coaching pedigree, and same schedule but played in the SEC, they might be entered into the conversation at this point.
As Scott Van Pelt would say...how good is your good?

It's going to be so fucking awesome when Harbaugh forces Urbz to retire due to "heart problems". It will take a couple years, but that shit will happen.
Book It.

he can still live in Ann Arbor and turning that shitshow around would be the ultimate challenge.

There are indeed challenges in life like climbing Mt. Everest, winning the Boston Marathon, winning multiple Super Bowls, but turning the Lions around is an IMPOSSIBILITY!

Well, he's not an NFL coach now, but the man's about 50 years old and already has won three national titles. His college legacy is secure regardless of what he does from here on out (barring some sort of Sanduskyesque scandal). I could see him eventually wanting to give the pros a shot.
September 30th, 2015 at 9:13 AM ^
his entire offensive system would have to be reformulated for that transiton to work, he's not Steve Spurrier.
September 30th, 2015 at 9:26 AM ^
I wouldn't necessarily say that. Spread elements are creeping into the NFL. He'd have to cut down significantly on QB rush attempts, but he could still do a lot of his other stuff.
Whether he would be a good NFL coach, I have no idea. Certainly he could be exposed at that level when his QBs have to make much tougher reads. But he might want to try it out. He can't prove anything else at the college level.
September 30th, 2015 at 9:44 AM ^
If Chip Kelly ends up flaming out, it will be a long time before anyone takes a shot on a spread coach from college, even one with Meyer's resume. If we were to chase him off (imo, this is a silly concept, I think his reasons for leaving Florida were way more complex than 'o no saban ahhh'), I think he'd simply retire young like many coaches before him and then live like a god in Columbus.
But like come on, did Bo chase Woody off?
September 30th, 2015 at 11:29 AM ^
It's not necessarily that Harbaugh would be "chasing off" Meyer. I just don't know if Meyer wants to be a college coach forever. He's climbed the mountain three times already.
Chip Kelly inherited a 4-12 Philly team and took them to the playoffs his first two years. Even if they stagnate now, I'm not sure how that could be constituted as flaming out.

Meh, I'm not sure we deserve a NY6 bowl if we lose to OSU, MSU, and Utah.
Our big win will be who? BYU? Minny? NW? Penn State? Not impressed. Ole Miss got in by beating Alabama.
We need to beat one of OSU or MSU to get in, IMO.
September 30th, 2015 at 9:20 AM ^
depends largely on how the SEC breaks down... only one conference is getting 3 NY6 teams. If we lose to MSU and OSU, that puts one in the playoffs and one in the Rose Bowl. I could certainly see us playing a G5 school out in the Fiesta if things break this way, but it depends on one of Georgia/LSU/Bama not being in contention for an NY6 bowl.

I don't want to just see a retirement from that enabler of criminals. He wussed out at Florida and left the program in shambles. I hope he does the same thing at ohio state.

No, but they are still 60-1.
Those are not start worrying about the New Year's Eve plans your wife made and now you are going to try to tell her that you want to stay home and watch college football and geez Honey, it's the Playoffs, it's not just a regular game or even a bowl game, it's really really important odds.
Those are looooong odds. A horse at 60-1 in a race is glue if he does not win it.
I would not start changing plans just yet.

You are honestly telling me you thought you can win the NC last year, after game 4? Anything can happen this year. That is why it is called odds...

Seriously why are you registered here? I mean, sure the occasional lurk to check for OSU content makes sense but why create an account? On the rare occasions I have checked 11W, I have never seen Michigan avatars, but there are always several Buckeye avatars on MGOBLOG that make regular appearances. It's weird how much you guys follow us and it's a weird use of your time to police the exuberance of rival fans on their own blog. As to your comment, one human being was responsible for the content and any insinuation you take from this thread..."you guys" is an unneccessary generalization. Few rational people think we'll do THAT well outside of some improbable scenarios this year.

Look how fast Jim Harbaugh turned the 49ers around.
This is a talented team he inherited.

I put $40 on us before the Utah game at 80-1 and another $40 to win the B1G at 22.5-1. We may not win either of those things, but it's looking like our chances are better than what the oddsmakers thought at the time.

We're still quite a long way away from that point in the season, so the odds aren't changing because Michigan is a title contender. It's because people started betting heavy on 500-1 and the book needed to be balanced.
September 29th, 2015 at 8:30 PM ^
If that's all that it was, the shift wouldn't be nearly so steep.
