New offseason, new moderator sticky.

READ THIS FIRST:

--------------------------------------

What this thread is for: It's an ad-hoc way of tracking what threads and comments get removed. Mods that remove a thread should post the title here with a brief reason as to why the thread is gone.

Don't comment in this thread unless you have to: if you leave an irrelevant comment in this thread it will be deleted (see: "cumbrously long").

--------------------------------------

Things we moderate a lot:

  1. Politics. Don’t you get enough of this everywhere else?
  2. Noise/snowflakes. We ask our moderators to try really hard not to censor ideas but some ideas are so tiresome and retread and badly argued that they’re not worth keeping around. If you’re getting a substantial amount of downvotes we’ll look to see if you’re posting an unpopular opinion that you can support. If you can’t support it politely and rationally, or if you don’t acknowledge the holes in your argument, it’s noise.
  3. Useless content from other sites. Clickbait is annoying. 247, WTKA always get the benefit of the doubt.
  4. The Drew Sharp Memorial Don’t Feed the Professional Trolls Rule. Pete Finebaum has taken the place of the late Sharp. Valenti and Chatsports are the other two on the ban list. Bleacher Report is off the list but still under close observation.
  5. Bewbs and general misogyny/objectifying of women. We tried one year of this and our female readership shot up after being really low. This means it’s a good rule: however much you enjoy cutting loose with the guys, we have tens of thousands of readers it drives away.

Hall of Stickies Past:

The first, the second, the third. the fourth. The fifth. The sixth. The seventh.

Great Moments in Moderation:

Note: I'll be deleting comments a lot while this works its way off the main page. Please only post here if you're trying to get our moderators' attention. These get cumbrously long without all the offhand comments.

You can always find this in our menu under "MGoBoard"

Haven't been able to navigate thru the new site yet to get acclimated but wanted to pass on that when I go to to the site via mobile (Ipad), it takes me directly to the "welcome to MGB3.0" with no access to the board, etc.

What a year. Hotel, Mr.Yost, and Evenyoubrutus all got disciplined. I am trying my hardest not to be the fourth member of that Mount Rushmore. (I just keep repeating to myself, "no politics, no politics, no politics..."

This is a great idea. I lost a lot of points a couple weeks ago for an unknown reason. Could I be replenished or at least have an explanation of what I did wrong? Thanks.

Mocking umbig11, being an all-around douche to everyone, giving false “insider knowledge”. Couldn’t be more obvious.

Thank you. I did not know this was there. Still don’t really get it and I vehemently refute that top comment, but I guess this will have to suffice.

But I think what you really mean is no obviously PARTISAN politics.

Almost everything has a poltical bent to it (including, for example, NCAA regulations) but they don't always follow traditional Blue team/Red team lines. The amount of military praise on this site is overtly political and obviously tolerated.  Many other examples.  In my experience here, Blue team/Red team politics is not tolerated (righty so). Majority political opinions that cross party lines are tolerated (your site, your call). Minority political opinions are generally not (again your site, your call, but it is discriminatory).

I don't see anything in there about my original account, NYC Fan.  How do I find out why that account was banned?

I also don't understand the difference between those accounts nuked with negative points who are still able to post, and those that are left alone points-wise and are still technically "active" but which can't create new content nor be seen by other posters.

From a moderator's perspective, what is the distinction here?

There are four main levels of moderation based on how likely we think the user is to rehabilitate:

Bolivia: We set the poster back an X number of points. Often it comes with a penalty box as well as a permanent points loss, so for example the guy above lost 1,000 points permanently and 1,000,000 points for a month. For a month he's got this chain around his neck like "you did a bad" and then the permanent point loss is meant to set him back so he can earn his way back into good graces. Bolivia is for users who did a bad thing but we think they'll get past it, or at least we want them to. You earn a measure of respect if your account's been through Bolivia and returned.

Cave: One button crashes all your comments and though you think you can still post, nobody is seeing them--you go to a server copy that we don't use except the old app still draws from it so the app won't hurt our bandwidth. Caving is when we don't know you that well and we want your account to be unusable. Start a new one if you think you can do better.

Cave and banish: We cave you, block you from posting, and put a marker on your IP address so we'll be notified if you start another account. This is almost 100% for spammers.

Delete: Mostly used for trolls or people who come here with hate messages. We want no record of your existence--your email account was probably bogus anyway but just in case we sign it up for all sorts of nice things.

Also the super mysterious moderator action:

Misery: This was where we banished you to a version of the site kept on our original, house-built server. This server is infected with every virus we could infect it with. You think you're still posting on MGoBlog but nobody sees your posts because you're really just on a copy of it. Unfortunately that server won't boot now so this isn't currently an option, but HUEL is going to build us an option that's even meaner.

So I made a poor judgment call on my old account (PurpleBeaverEater) and apologized and requested it back but got no love. Can it be restored into Bolivia? I don’t really understand, I feel like I’m likely to rehab and it was my first time getting into trouble at this blog but my account got deleted outright.

Can you add the Blog's position regarding religious comments to your list? It is more nuanced than your "no politics" policy. It would be nice to have something explicitly stated to refer back to when threads start heading that way.
There was a lengthy discussion of this in the last sticky. It would be nice to capture the relevant parts of that.
Thanks.

I mean, we have multiple posters who find every opportunity to slip in their religious teachings and such. Just because you're a pastor doesn't mean you need to talk about it on a sports blog. And I say that as a religious person myself--it has no place here.

Seth

Literally the most pageviews of any post on MGoBlog in 2018 was me talking about my religion. It would be a little hypocritical to ban it.

If you use the board to advertise your religion it falls under advertising. If it's a big part of who you are and how you see the world and you reference it to inform your perspective in your posts it's fine. Since I've been prosthletyzed at all my life for being of a minority religion I've got a pretty good idea of when intention slips into aggression and I think the mods have done a good job to date of policing that line.

Maybe I missed it but whatever happened to the other mod, Justingoblue.  Not only does he not mod anymore but I noticed from him profile that he's posted twice in the last year and the last time was about a half a year ago.

Had some big work/life changes that make it tough to devote the kind of time needed to do the modding, but I still try to keep up with the site. Get some helpful emails that keep me up to date like with your post here.

I’m back in the midwest after three years in Florida, joke’s on me that the move was to Ohio, though.

Seconded. Let's do something about the sexual stuff since we said we'd do something about the sexual stuff. You have a long-time female reader complaining multiple times in that thread. Kinda going backwards.

Wolverheel

April 26th, 2018 at 9:20 PM ^

The notion that females can't handle sexual stuff is a bit degrading, no?

I mean I personally find it somewhat tasteless and it doesn't add anything valuable, but that's describing like 20% of all comments. I get that the site has an image to uphold, but I don't get why "no sexual stuff" would be just a "getting women to the site" thing.

Mr. Elbel

April 27th, 2018 at 4:21 PM ^

No one said the female readers can't handle anything. She was clearly exasperated and I felt obliged to apologize for her having to read stupid comments on a post she should have been able to enjoy without reading stupid comments. Its beyond tasteless. I don't think we should just say disrespectful and classless things and then tell women that they should just deal in the name of equality. Thank you, Seth, for just deleting it. Was worth getting rid of that garbage.

Are there rules against someone streaking through someones comment history just to downvote them?

No, and the reason is a pretty simple, mechanical one - there's no way in the current format to know who is doing it with any certainty. Yeah, it probably is trolling, but speculating based on who downvoted a given thread....well, we wouldn't do anything based on anecdotal evidence.

Hi Mods!

Still trying to get your attention.  Can I get un-caved, please?

in the list of people whose opinions matter, this tool is pretty low and certainly the lowest among active players.
