Michigan vs MSU MBB Open Thread

Submitted by Rather be on BA on

T-minus 60 minutes to game time.  I just got off a long day of work and am looking forward to a great game.  Figured we could fire this thing up early here to get some conversation going for this huge game.

If Michigan wins today we will be the first team to beat 3 top ten teams in a row in a season since Iowa did in 1986-87 (per ESPN stats and info).

Go Blue!  BEAT STAEE.

I am constantly amazed at the fact that Izzo gets to cut off two feet of the court every time michigan has the ball. It's unbelievable.

umchicago mentioned it above but we're going to have to find ways to punish them for being so "up front" defensively, backdoor action for example.  It's awesome shots are falling but that rate won't hold up; we need to find ways to get easier baskets.  Not to pile on, well yes to pile on, a foul every now and then could help also (though I don't think it's as bad as most think, they're just good/sound  at defense).

This is true. And only partly b/c of how much Harris is being allowed to grab/slap/hand check Nik.  Nik needs to learn how to play through that somehow.  Duke did the same thing to him.

No doubt. On an in bounds pass, Walton tried to split two Sparties. Neither moved their feet and they locked all 4 hands in his way like an old fashioned game of red rover.

Not to mention years of Sparties showing the ball, then moving both feet before starting a dribble. Check out Harris' first 3.

That said. Just play. Relax and win

Does this slow down the Stauskas to the NBA talk? He seems to get controlled failry easily when an NBA talent is defending him. I think he's still an NBA player, but games like this make me think that he's not a first round talent right now. And I don't even know what to say about GRIII. That guy just disappears sometimes. He's going to get drafted on potential, but he's not nearly as aggressive as he needs to be.

But fortunately for Stauskas they don't let defenders lean 90% of their body weight on the guy with the ball in the NBA(or the NCAA tournament). That appears to be MSU's strategy, and with the help of some spectacularly lazy officials it appears to be working.

A couple skilled players (Harris and Appling) and a bunch of big, long, raw muggers.  On offense they chuck up shots and plow in over the back for offensive boards.  On defense they just hack and hip check.

Enough whining about B1G refs jn a B1G game.

The difference is Harris has been lock down on Stuaskas and we are fortunate to be only down 6.

GRIII needs to get in the game and drive to the hoop.

Also  would like to see Stauskas move away from the ball using double screens and make Harris work.

Great first half for Sparty and M is staying in the game with the three ball.

Dick Vitale talking about Dantonio winning the Rose Bowl mad me puke in my mouth.

As others have noted, Stauskas has 8 points and 4 assists.  Harris is a good defender, but he's definitely doesn't have him on lockdown.

I do agree about GRIII, but the early fouls didn't help, nor does the officiating clearly favoring one team over the other.  Some of that is aggression, but also some of that is a team getting frustrated with non-calls and trying something else.
